Chapter 394: Him over my solitude
[PRIME GROUP]
When Penny arrived in her office, she quickly stopped by the door as she caught a person idling in the corner. Sliding her eyes to the figure, her gaze met Hugo’s.
“Second Brother,” she called with a slight smile, closing the door behind her. “About last night…”
“You slept at his place?” he asked before she could change the subject.
Penny cleared her throat, marching inside, sensing it would be a long morning. “Yes,” she answered, placing the new empty handbag Benjamin had gotten for her on the desk. “That’s where I spent the night.”
“Anything else you want to share?”
‘You don’t want me to tell you what I did this morning with Zoren, do you?’ she wondered, propping herself against the edge of the desk. Penny crossed her arms, locking eyes with him. “There’s nothing else to share since nothing else happened, except him fainting from fatigue. However, I do have a few questions for you.”
Hugo studied her demeanor and shook his head. There was nothing he thought his sister had done. After all, Hugo had a good impression of Zoren, especially after that night of Zoren and Penny’s first date.
He shrugged, walking on the same spot to face her. Now, Penny leaned against the desk while Hugo stood in the corner with a book in his hand.
“Shoot,” he said. “What do you want to know about last night?”
“What happened last night?” she asked directly.
Hugo lowered his head, meeting her gaze. “Can I lie?”
“I’d know if it’s a lie,” she replied calmly but firmly. “The guy you were grappling with… wasn’t he the driver we hired last night to take us home?”
“So you did recognize him?”
“Second Brother, I was a little tipsy last night and maybe a little out of it, but my memory is clear,” Penny smirked. “Though I didn’t recognize his face because of how badly beaten he was, I did recognize the tattoo on his arm.”
Hugo took a deep breath, raising his chin. “My little sister is sharp.”
“I run a security firm,” she reminded him. “Though I’m not required to, it doesn’t hurt to have an extra skill.”
Thanks to her past life, Penny had a strong foundation in almost everything. While there were many downsides to her desire to please her brothers, there was some good in it. For example, Penny had learned skills like martial arts, which also helped her get along with Hugo.
Penny and Hugo already had a shared interest in animals. However, as she said, it wouldn’t hurt to keep and hone the skill she had learned so painstakingly in her previous life.
“Who is he?” she asked again, her gaze sharp. “And what does he want?”
Hugo stared at his sister, chuckling as he recalled her visits to the base. “Still investigating,” he casually said, moving to the couch. “I may have roughed him up too much, so it’ll take a while before he starts talking. However, we’ve already learned about the gang he’s part of.”
“Who was his target?” she asked. “Was it you? Or me?”
Hugo shrugged as he settled onto the couch. “That’s what I want to know, Penny,” he said meaningfully. “Was he after me, or was it you? Honestly, I’m puzzled why you think someone would target you. Did you do something?”
“Is this a question out of concern, or part of an investigation?” she narrowed her eyes. “Tell me, Second Brother. Am I under suspicion?”
This time, Hugo didn’t answer. His silence indicated that if he answered, he was either disobeying an order or had another, deeper reason. Either way, Penny knew her brother was bound by military rules, even if he was out of the combat zone.
“How did you find out about him?” she asked, changing the subject.
“The AC.”
Penny raised an eyebrow. “The AC?”
“Last night, we were both drunk,” he explained. “But somehow, I noticed I was getting more intoxicated. That’s why I opened the window. Fortunately, you did too.”
Recalling the events of the previous night, Penny had opened the window to enjoy the city’s polluted night air. Now that she thought about it, she did feel better once she opened the window and started breathing the air.

“He sprayed something in the car?” she guessed, and he nodded. “How?”
“Probably when he picked it up from the parking lot.”
Penny nodded. “I see. So his target could be either you or me?”
“Exactly.” Hugo nodded. “Penny, you already know why I might be targeted. I’m not just any soldier. But you…” he paused, looking at her seriously. “… I need to know why you think you’d be targeted.”
“I’m in business,” Penny replied without hesitation. “Isn’t business a dangerous field?”
“Do you have enemies?”
“I don’t have a specific enemy, but many don’t like me.” Penny pressed her lips, aware of her brother’s commanding tone. “Many disapproved of my entry into this market and my growing network. I wouldn’t be surprised if some see my connections as a threat. Perhaps killing me is the only way they could think of so they can catch up.”
Everything she said made sense, yet he didn’t entirely believe her explanation. Well, Penny didn’t even believe her explanation. How could he?
Hugo let out a shallow breath, fixing his gaze on her. “Penny,” he said, watching her raise her eyebrows. “I know you don’t believe that, but I also know you’re unsure why you could be a target.”
“But you have an idea?” she replied, raising her eyebrows, and he nodded.
“Answer me, Penny.” Hugo paused, giving her a serious look. “Do you like Zoren Pierson?”
“I do,” she replied without hesitation, even though the question came from her second brother. “I like him… more than I expected.”
As calm as a lake, Hugo nodded. “How sure are you of those feelings? How do you know you like him as a man, not just because you were moved by his actions until now?”
Penny fell silent, her gaze dropping to the floor, her lips pursing. A slight smile crept onto her face as she answered,
“The moment I chose him over my solitude.” Slowly, she lifted her eyes to meet his. “I’d rather have him around than keep my solitude.”
