Chapter 402: Sold informations
The short, bald man led Penny to a small private room where she sat alone. The room was small, with a wide table and long, curved seats, separated by partitions. Penny glanced at the door, wondering if someone would come in. However, she soon realized that wasn’t how this place operated.
“Quite bold for a woman to come here alone,” a voice spoke from behind her, resonating in the small room.
Glancing over her shoulder, she saw why the seats had partitions and why the space was so confined. She didn’t dwell on it and turned her attention forward.
“I want to know about Patricia Miller,” she said directly. “Can you do that?”
“You want to know her affiliation with the Pierson family?”
Penny raised a brow, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly. “You do know a lot.”
“It’s our business, Miss Penelope,” the man replied. “Information is our business. Isn’t that why you’re here? Or rather, we had to make sure we impress you so you do not fight us in this market as well.”
Penny smirked in amusement. “I have no plans to enter your market, rest assured.”
“Very well. That put our hearts at a lot of ease,” said the person in the other private room right next to hers. “So? Is that your only request?”
“One hour,” she responded, giving him a clear ultimatum. “I want answers in an hour. Otherwise, my offers are off the table.”
With that, Penny picked up her purse and stood. She glanced briefly at the partition, unable to make out any details of the person on the other side. Without idling, she stepped out, noticing a few men guarding the private room next to hers.
‘Impressive,’ she thought as she walked away without looking back.
—
As soon as Penny got into her car, her phone chimed with a notification. Checking it, her lips curled into a smile.
“They’re fast,” she whispered, glancing at the establishment she had just left. “I wonder if that person also works in this bar?”
With those lingering thoughts, she sped away, driving herself home.
In her previous life, Penny had ended up in jail for a crime she didn’t commit. During her imprisonment, she learned many vicious things, but also gathered fragments of information about her and her family’s downfall. However, it wasn’t enough to understand the real cause or why the Bennet family was targeted. All she knew was that this information center operated among the upper echelons, selling intel to a select few.
Thanks to her current standing, Penny had managed to secure an invitation from the bartender to join their network. His subtle hints the night before — during the bachelor’s party — had been her invitation. Therefore, she didn’t waste a moment buying the information about Patricia, as it was her top priority.
To be fair, Penny didn’t actually need their services—she had already put out a priority order. But for networking purposes, she accepted their offer. The files they sent had arrived just minutes earlier than her own intel. So, that explained how useless their services were for her.
—
When Penny reached home, she spent some time with her parents before locking herself in her bedroom. Seated at her study table, she scrolled through the email exchanges between Patricia and Jonathan Pierson, all while listening to their recorded conversations.
“Good work, Miss Miller,” the man on the recording said. “You’ve done well. Zoren Pierson is now impatient and desperate. Play along.”
“Thank you, Mr. Pierson.”
A few more brief exchanges played, with Patricia reporting on the situation.
“Mr. Pierson, Zoren Pierson invited me to dinner! What should I do!? Oh, my god!” Excitement laced Patricia’s voice, making the man chuckle. “I think he likes me!”
“Haha. Then I’ll send you a nice dress.”
“Really?!”
“Be at your best, Miss Miller. If you want everything, you need to work hard and always be at your best. Zoren Pierson may not be in the best health, but the competition is fierce. Keep him close.”
“Yes, Mr. Pierson! I’ll work hard!”
Penny snorted, her stomach twisting in anger as she listened to their conversation. Her jaw tightened, fists trembling, furious at how excited Patricia sounded while deceiving someone.

“Mr. Pierson, what am I going to do?” Patricia’s voice sounded alarmed at the next call. “I just met Penny! What if she overheard me talking about the Piersons?”
“Miss Miller, what did you say about the Piersons?”
There was a brief hesitation before Patricia recounted her words. The man remained silent for a moment, seemingly weighing their next move.
“Did she say anything about it?” he asked.
“No, but what if she overheard me? I’m not sure if she heard everything, but… Mr. Pierson, what if she causes trouble?! You have to help me! If she tells Zoren Pierson—”
“Miss Miller, calm down.”
“How can I calm down!?” she yelled nervously. “I’m impersonating her, after all! If she finds out, I’m doomed! She doesn’t know about Renren!”
The man paused before responding, his tone calm. “Focus on the date first, Miss Miller. Don’t worry about Penelope Bennet. Like you said, she doesn’t know about Zoren Pierson. Even if they met, she wouldn’t suspect that her childhood friend and Zoren Pierson are the same person.”
“… You think so?”
“Make sure the date is a success. As long as Zoren Pierson is wrapped around your finger, he’ll do anything you want. Don’t forget our goal, Miss Miller. You will be the matriarch of the Pierson family.”
Patricia’s breath hitched, and one could imagine her nodding. “Okay.”
“For now, avoid Penelope Bennet or any members of the Bennet family.”
“Okay.”
“And don’t run your mouth carelessly next time,” the man added sternly. “Keep it shut until everything is settled.”
“Okay. I’ll keep you posted.”
“Good luck, Miss Miller.” His voice lingered before he chuckled meaningfully.
That was the last conversation. When it ended, Penny remained silent, her eyes blazing with fury as she stared at her laptop screen.
“Good luck, Miss Miller.”
While she couldn’t identify the man’s voice at first, his laughter and the slight shift in his tone made her recognize him.
“It’s him,” she whispered. “Nathaniel.” The man who had befriended her, only to stab her in the back and bring about her family’s demise.
