Chapter 440: Sleeping beauty
Five years ago, five days before the date of the marriage registry…

Penny grinned in satisfaction, staring at herself in the mirror attached to the back of the locker. She was wearing a nurse’s uniform. Why? Because she had just shrugged off some hoodlums she’d beaten after they tried to take the money she won from their bet.

“This is why nurses always look pretty,” she muttered, gently smoothening the uniform that wasn’t hers with her palms. “I should’ve just chosen to become a nurse. Their uniforms make me look like an angel.”

Penny reached for the ID and wore it to complete her look. Once she was ready, she looked around the locker room before tiptoeing her way out. She slowly peeked through the door, looking left and right, before jumping into the hallway.

She casually smiled at the patients and staff she passed by. However, when she saw the person at the end of the hallway, she turned around immediately.

“Uh oh.” Her steps quickened as she noticed a janitor pushing his trolley toward her. She pursed her lips and snapped her eyes forward, avoiding any confrontation. Not that she was scared of them, but they were a troublesome bunch.

Penny was out to find Nathaniel, not to get held up by some rogues.

“Hey!”

Penny’s steps halted when she heard the man behind her yell. Seeing the few people in the hallway, she kept moving.

“Hey, you!”

She took a deep breath, listening to the sound of footsteps approaching. Her jaw tightened as her eyelids drooped, ready to fight or run. Fighting in such a crowded place wouldn’t hurt her, but it could affect the bystanders. Hence, she leaned more on running.

Just as Penny was about to sprint away, she heard the same person talking again.

“Mister, have you seen this woman…”

Her brows slowly rose as she glanced over her shoulder. She saw the men talking to the janitor and sighed in relief.

‘Damn it!’ she cursed, resuming her steps. ‘Why won’t they just let me go?’

Since the men hadn’t recognized her, Penny decided to get as far away as possible. She didn’t have a specific destination in mind — all she wanted was to escape them.

After minutes of walking aimlessly, Penny’s attention snapped to the sound of the elevator dinging. She furrowed her brows and glanced at the elevator number above the doors.

‘I didn’t know there’s such a floor in this hospital,’ she thought, stepping out of the lift.

Unlike the bustling halls she had passed previously, this floor was almost empty. Penny furrowed her brows, but thinking it was better to hide in a quiet place, she moved forward.

As she walked, she noticed another nurse’s station with only a few people there. She approached the station quietly, observing the staff. The nurses glanced at her but didn’t dwell on her presence, even though they had never seen her before.

“Ahem,” Penny cleared her throat and absentmindedly reached for a chart. She glanced at it and smiled. “I’ll go check Mr. Pierson’s room.”

The nurses at the station exchanged confused looks, but Penny didn’t linger and quickly gathered what she needed for her “rounds.” As she walked away, one of the nurses couldn’t help but ask,

“Is she one of Mr. Pierson’s private nurses?” he asked his colleague. “I’ve never seen her before.”

“Mr. Pierson’s medical crew is always changing, so who knows?”

“We should’ve asked for identification, right?”

The other nurse shrugged. “We didn’t receive any orders tonight. Besides, even if she isn’t his nurse, his room is heavily guarded.”

The nurses on the VIP floor didn’t think much more of it, confident that Zoren’s security would handle anything suspicious. Moreover, Zoren had been rushed to the hospital tonight, but he was scheduled for a transfer in a few hours.

“Well, I guess you’re right.” The male nurse nodded in understanding. “Who could get close to Mr. Pierson with all that security?”

Penny clasped the bodyguard’s feet and dragged him into a nearby empty ward. She glanced at the three men she had taken down, who had almost caught onto her lies.

“What a bother,” she muttered, scrunching up her nose in dismay. “I shouldn’t have come here, even if I lied.”

Penny now had two options: hide in the room and wait for the bodyguards to wake up, or get into character and play nurse.

Looking at the chart in her hand, a shallow breath slipped past her lips.

“He seems like he needs help,” she whispered, glancing at the chart. “And if I don’t do a nurse’s job, he might be left unattended.”

Hunting down Nathaniel to make him suffer was one thing, but letting a sick man die because of her was different. She might be ruthless, but her conscience still lingered.

With that thought in mind, Penny moved further into the room and searched for a face mask. After finding one and putting it on, she collected any medicines the patient might need to complete her disguise.

Once prepared, Penny headed toward Mr. Pierson’s room. There were more bodyguards the closer she got, but since she had already passed the first line of defense, the questions became simpler.

It was surprisingly easy, despite the people inside. Before she knew it, Penny was standing in front of the ward, surrounded by more guards. She carefully slid the door open, stepped inside without hesitation, and closed it behind her.

‘Wow.’ Her mouth fell open at the sight of the grand VIP room. ‘This patient must either be a president or loved by the world.’

Penny stretched her neck as she walked in, finally catching sight of the bed behind a partition. As she reached the end of the bed, her eyes fell on the patient sleeping there. She froze. Her lips parted slightly, and her breath slowed.

At that moment, only one thought crossed her mind: “How come no one told me the patient wasn’t a leader or beloved by the world, but a sleeping beauty?”

The patient was the most gorgeous man she had ever laid her eyes on, making her heartbeat echo in her ears.
