Chapter 612: Fine lines between truth and lie
“Help! Help! Somebody! Please, help me! Don’t let them take me away!”
“Ugh…” Ginnie grunted as she tried to get up. “These losers… There are so many men here, but no one is courageous enough to help. I need to help her.”
Grace held Ginnie’s arm, assisting her to stand up. However, she scanned her surroundings. The first thing she looked for was CCTV cameras, followed by the bodyguards in the crowd. She quickly understood why no one was stepping in.
There were more bodyguards with Aiden than expected.
“He followed her here,” Grace concluded as they stood up. “Ginnie, stay here. They might notice you.”
“But Lily—”
“I’ll go.” Grace squeezed Ginnie’s arm, nodding at her reassuringly. “Call the police. I’ll follow them…”
Grace trailed off as she caught a figure from the corner of her eye. Even before she could see who it was, she held her breath and panicked.
“Penny,” she breathed out. The moment Grace turned her head, all she saw was Penny thrusting her arm toward one of the men dragging Lily away.
“Ah!” the bodyguard yelped as he moved his arm away, letting go of Lily due to the sting in his shoulder. He didn’t see the attack coming, but he sensed the murderous intent approaching him from behind. Thus, he released Lily, barely inflicting any graze.
“What the—” The bodyguard touched his shoulder, only to feel a shallow cut. Looking at the person who had attacked him, his eyes fell on a small woman spinning a broken wineglass in her fingers.
“Huh?” Meanwhile, Lily, surprised to be released from one grip, turned to the other bodyguard. When she saw him looking in another direction, she glanced over and saw Penny coming to her rescue.
“Penny…” Lily’s lips quivered, her eyes brimming with tears as she felt safe with Penny around. Shaking her head, Lily clenched her teeth, knowing she had to get away first. Taking advantage of the brief distraction Penny created, Lily opened her mouth wide and bit the other man’s arm.
“Ah!!!” the man yelled in both surprise and pain, instinctively letting go of Lily.
The second the man released Lily, she scurried away from him as fast as she could. In the blink of an eye, Lily hid behind Penny.
“Penny…” Lily’s voice shook as she clutched the back of Penny’s clothes. “They’re going to take me away. Please help me. I’m very scared!”
Penny glanced at Lily, noticing she was holding back tears. When Lily was being dramatic, she would yell and act like a diva. But when she was truly scared, happy, or hurt, she would be quiet and hold back her tears.
Right now, Penny could feel Lily’s fear, even though Lily was just pinching her clothes and not touching her directly.
“Stay back,” whispered Penny, shifting her eyes to the nearby people around them. “Hey.”
The group of young men flinched the moment Penny’s gaze landed on them.
“Look after them,” Penny said calmly but authoritatively. “If anyone lays a hand on them… I’ll kill you all.”
The young men’s breaths hitched as they shifted their eyes to Lily and then to Ginnie and Grace. Lily offered them an apologetic look, but at the same time, she quietly cheered them on. Until now, Penny’s bossiness hadn’t changed; she would even order strangers around whenever she felt like it.
“What are you waiting for?” Penny arched an eyebrow at them, tilting her head in Lily’s direction. “Go.”
“Ye—yes, ma’am!” the young men found themselves straightening their backs and saluting her. They took the initiative to approach Lily and carefully usher her to the bar counter where Ginnie and Grace were.
“Penny…” Ginnie held her head, her eyes on Penny. “She’s going to be in trouble.”
Ginnie’s worries, however, were short-lived when she noticed Grace’s irritation. When she turned her head, she saw Grace touching her nape in distress.
“Grace, what’s wrong?” Ginnie asked, her curiosity piqued. “Are you hurt? Did you hit your neck?”
“No.” Grace snapped her gaze at the people and then at Penny. “I told her not to get herself into trouble.”
Grace didn’t explain her frustrations, turning back to the bartender. When Grace faced him, the bartender jolted.
“I’m not serving wine,” he blurted out.

“I’m not asking for wine, but for a phone,” Grace explained, leaning over the counter. “If you give me that, I’ll let you off the hook. However, I advise you to find a different place to work because this place is going to get dragged into court for negligence. It’s not going to operate for a while.”
The poor bartender tensed up, seeing the anger in Grace’s eyes. “I’ll get you the phone.”
With that, the bartender quickly left his post to get her phone. Meanwhile, Grace let out a shallow breath and glanced at Lily. Lily quickly jumped to hug Ginnie, her entire body shaking. Grace didn’t dwell on them, lifting her eyes to Penny.
Grace didn’t need to study the look on Penny’s face to see that the latter was angry. Penny wouldn’t let anyone off the hook, especially not Aiden.
‘I guess I’m going to handle another case on top of the deal she asked me to handle,’ she thought, glancing at Lily and Ginnie once more. ‘But I don’t mind taking this case. I’ll win it, anyway.’
Especially since Grace knew this was an act of retaliation. After all, no one in the club—not even the bouncers—had tried to help Lily. ‘They can twist their truths as much as they want, but I know Penny’s truths.’
Then again, even if Penny’s truths were a lie, Grace would make them the truth.
That was Grace’s job—to ensure Penny would never step foot in prison. That was the deal they had, and thus, Grace stayed to observe and gather evidence. The night hadn’t ended, and the aftermath hadn’t concluded, but she was already starting to gather evidence to ensure this wouldn’t reflect badly on Penny and wouldn’t threaten the person—her and her mom’s savior—who belonged nowhere near a place like prison.
