Chapter 630: Petty and silly
The next day…
Penny grunted as she peeked from one eye, a little blinded by the light coming through the window. Turning her head, she winced at the heaviness on the back of her head. Before she could do anything else, she saw Slater sleeping in the chair beside her bed.
Half of Slater’s body was on her bed, while his bottom was in the chair. Deep lines formed between her brows as she noticed Haines and Charles sleeping on the couch. Charles was snoring loudly, while Haines slept with knitted brows. Whatever dream Haines was having, it told her it wasn’t a good one.
“Hmm?” Penny propped herself up on her elbow to look around the ward.
No one else was there aside from her father, uncle, and third brother. Thinking about it made the corners of her lips hook up.
“Right,” she told herself, almost laughing. “I shouldn’t remember at all.”
But she could remember some things that had happened last night.
She could recall Zoren and her talking, albeit vaguely. If she concentrated, she would surely remember all of it. However, she didn’t try because the first thing she remembered about last night was telling herself not to touch “her” memory.
Meaning, that the sober Penny shouldn’t peek at her own memory.
It was impossible because she would eventually recall everything, but at the same time, she wanted to pretend she couldn’t. As she scanned the people in the ward, a shallow breath slipped past her.
‘She… still got one of her dream experiences,’ she thought. ‘Although I did have such a petty and silly wish in the past. How did I take that for granted so easily?’
Last night, after she and Zoren had talked and calmed down, the door suddenly flew open. When they turned, the first thing they saw was Charles and Slater’s aghast expressions. They looked almost like twins, or rather, they appeared to be just the younger and older versions of each other.
As soon as they rushed inside, Zoren was tossed aside while Charles and Slater focused on her. Haines followed, and then Allison, who seemed to have just come out after fainting multiple times.
When Penny asked how they found out, Zoren quietly walked away. However, before he could leave and give her family some privacy, Slater snitched on him, revealing that it was Zoren who had called the family to tell them what happened.
All Zoren could tell them was not to let Hugo know about this. After all, Hugo didn’t want to inform their parents because he was worried, but Zoren thought it was only the right thing to do. Moreover, Zoren couldn’t scold Penny, so he assumed her parents would.
Allison did.
And that was how Penny spent the rest of her night being taken care of by her family while watching Allison scold Hugo and Zoren — even Slater for just being loud. When Atlas arrived, he wasn’t safe either, because Allison found him too relaxed when his little sister was already in the hospital.
It was chaotic, but at the same time, it was something the drunk Penny realized wasn’t as good as she thought it would be. A learning lesson. She wanted love and attention, but they were giving her too much of both.
“Haha.” Penny let out a chuckle, adjusting her position until her back rested against the headboard.
At that moment, the door slid open.
“Penny, you’re awake, baby?” Allison rushed in with some paper bags she was carrying. She placed them on the side table and sat on the edge of the bed. “Don’t lean back too much. You still have a stitch.”
Penny smiled and reached for her mother’s hand. “Mom,” she called, her lips pressed together to stop herself from grinning from ear to ear.
“Yes, honey?”
“I love you,” Penny expressed, beaming. “And I’m glad you’re my mom.”
Allison’s face softened, but it didn’t last long. “Penelope Bennet, are you just saying this so I won’t scold you?” she replied, frustrated that even though she hadn’t scolded Penny, she was equally upset that Penny had gotten into a fight at the bar!
Her daughter hadn’t had that kind of troublesome phase in her teenage years, but it seemed she was making up for it as an adult now.
“Hehe.” Penny giggled and leaned over to hug Allison. “Hehehe.”
“Tsk.” Allison clicked her tongue but didn’t have the heart to push her away. The worst she could do was give Penny a light slap on the shoulder. “You worried me so much! Do you know how scared I was when your husband called?”
“Mhm,” Penny hummed, wanting to add that she knew because Allison looked like she passed out a couple of times on her way to the hospital.
“Ugh…” Slater slowly grunted as he pulled himself away, opening his eyes. The moment he saw Penny hugging Allison, his face crumpled. “The troublemaker is awake.”

Penny glanced at him and smirked. “Just now, I know.”
“What?” Slater gasped in disbelief. “Mom, your daughter is fine now. She’s vile again!”
“Ugh… how did Slater get into our room…” Charles trailed off as he turned to his side, opening his eyes only to realize the person beside him wasn’t his wife. “Ah!?”
Charles got up quickly, only to remember he wasn’t home. When the memories of last night settled in, he cast a look at his wife and Penny.
“Oh, my princess!” He got up, waking Haines on the couch. “My dearest princess, how do you feel now? Are you okay? Where are you hurt?”
As he moved, Charles had to walk past Slater. Thus, he kicked Slater’s chair a little to the side to make way for himself. Not that his action was necessary, but Slater had fought this spot with him last night, and he was still bitter about it.
Slater’s dismay went unnoticed as both his parents focused on Penny. “This is clearly favoritism now,” he mumbled to himself before he sighed, cupping his face and idling on the edge of the couch.
“Penny, I’m so glad you look better now,” he said. “Don’t worry about that person. He’s as good as dead.”
