Chapter 634: First Brother accident
Zoren’s only reason for requesting that Penny and he stay in the Bennet Mansion for the time being was that he knew her family would want to take care of her. He could have offered for them to stay at his home, but he thought his in-laws might not feel comfortable moving around his place. Besides, he didn’t mind living in the place where his wife would return after their Thursday meetings. Thus, the arrangement was something that everyone was happy to hear about.
Penny was initially pleased with it, as she had been wanting to come home and relax a little. After all that ordeal with her other self, she felt she deserved a vacation. She had stressed herself out. However, now that they were on the way home, she was feeling a bit skeptical.
The car Charles used was his old van—the same van that had taken the Bennet children to school. It fits all of them, but what made her skeptical was the silence.
Again, the silence—the same silence they had experienced during her family and Zoren’s first meeting.
“Oh, my goodness…” Penny mumbled to herself, glancing around the van.
Her parents were inside with Haines in the front passenger seat. Charles and Atlas were seated in the first row. In the second row, Zoren was next to Penny, followed by Allison. Slater and Hugo were in the back. None of them had spoken a word since they left the hospital, making Penny wonder what was wrong.
Had she done anything else while she let her other self take charge of this body? Was there something Zoren and Penelope hadn’t told her? Or something her family was keeping from her? As far as Penny knew, the drunk Penny would occasionally meet her family, but she reassured herself she wasn’t doing anything shady.
Now that Penny thought about it, why would she trust herself?
Her thoughts trailed off when Allison suddenly chuckled. Leaning toward Penny, Allison giggled.
“This feels like taking you home after you’ve given birth,” Allison quipped, but her voice felt like a bucket of cold water poured on them, not just on Penny, but on everyone. The only one who seemed happy about the thought was Zoren, who innocently smiled at his mother-in-law.
Atlas slid his eyes to the corner, arching a brow at his father. ‘Wouldn’t he say anything?’ he wondered, only to realize that the one who made that comment was his mother. ‘I feel bad for him.’
Charles pressed his mouth tight. His face, however, showed absolute dismay. Yet all he could do was look back with a sour expression. Allison ignored him, smiling gently at Penny and Zoren. But when Allison’s eyes slid to her husband, they glinted.
“Hu!” Charles quietly huffed as he looked away, almost like a puppy being turned away by its owner. When he sensed Atlas still side-eyeing him, he glared daggers at his eldest son. ‘What are you looking at, huh?!’
Charles’s remarks were kept in his mind, but Atlas was so used to his father’s antics that he shrugged.
“Mom, why would you say something like that?!” Slater, on the other hand, didn’t share his brother’s caution. He pouted, resting his arm over the seat in front of him. “Penny is too young to even have a kid!”
“Mom already had two children at that age,” Atlas blurted out, making Slater gasp in disbelief.
Slater looked at his mother incredulously, hand on his chest. “Mom, is this true?”
“You’re at this age, and you still haven’t done the math?” Penny looked back at her third brother in disbelief, only to hear Hugo innocently inquire, “Really?”
Her mouth fell open, shifting her eyes to Hugo, whom she didn’t expect to be as oblivious as Slater. In Hugo’s defense, it didn’t matter until now that it was brought up. Hence, it tickled his curiosity. As for Slater, he narrowed his eyes suspiciously at his mother.
“Mom, was First Brother an accident?!”
For a second, Slater’s inquiry echoed in the van, as no one had expected that. Atlas, especially, froze as he thought about his parents’ history. He wasn’t that interested in their love story—the one he had seen was enough to give him diabetes. In other words, he didn’t know the answer to this.
Slowly, Atlas twisted his neck, facing his father and then his mother. “Am I an accident?”
“You kids!” Charles exclaimed as he looked back. “How dare you talk about your mother like that? No accidents!”
Allison smiled at Charles and then at the seemingly devastated Atlas. When her smile landed on Slater, the latter almost squealed upon catching the glint in Allison’s eyes.
“Slater, don’t be like that. No one’s an accident in my family,” said Allison with a shallow sigh, casting Zoren an apologetic look. “All of you were a gift from the heavens.”
“But that doesn’t answer the question of whether First Brother was illegitimate when he was in the womb,” Hugo curiously blurted out and quickly realized how one question could threaten his life.
“No, he wasn’t,” Allison asserted, nodding at Atlas reassuringly. “Atlas, don’t listen to your brothers.”
Slater pouted, but his eyes remained squinting. He didn’t buy that at all. Now that he thought about it, the older he got, the sneakier his parents seemed. As for Hugo, he quickly understood that silence was better. Atlas’s mood, on the other hand, completely soured because, as the eldest, he had a better understanding of his parents.
Penny let out an awkward laugh, turning to face her husband. She leaned in, placing her hand on the side of her mouth as she whispered, “Welcome to the family, Renren. Just a heads up: my family… isn’t as elegant as they appear… sometimes.”
Haines, in the front passenger seat, shook his head. He propped his elbow on the window, resting his jaw on his knuckles.

‘Even if what Allison said was true, I’m sure their children are suspicious. Poor Atlas,’ he thought, staring at the windshield until he furrowed his brows. ‘I feel like I’m forgetting something important. I wonder what it is?’

Meanwhile, at the airport, Wild was standing outside the arrival area, looking around.
“Where the hell are they?” he asked himself in dismay, checking his wristwatch. “He’s probably stuck in traffic. The traffic here is terrible. I’ll wait.”
But hours later, Haines still hadn’t arrived, and Wild was already fuming, ready to set the man on fire if he ever showed up.
