Chapter 640: She changed
“Let’s call off the engagement.”
A long wave of silence followed the echoes of Nina’s very quiet voice. She and Finn stared at each other, as if even Nina had to process what she had said.
Call off the engagement.
Who would have thought? In the end, she would say these words to the man she loved—the man she admired, the man who touched her heart like no other, and the very man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
Now, all she was waiting for was his answer.
What would it be?
“No?” “Fine?” “Why?” “Please don’t.”
Many things crossed her mind as she prepared her answer to all of them. After all, if these words came from him, then those would probably be the things she would say. She would ask him for an explanation or outright refuse. Their relationship wasn’t as grand as others, but what Nina was certain of was that their relationship had been genuine at one point. At least, that was what she believed.
After a minute, Nina finally heard him speak. However, what he said was something she didn’t expect to hear.
“Is that what you want?” Finn asked after a prolonged silence.
Hearing that, Nina couldn’t help but remember how he would always ask this question. Finn often asked her if her decisions were what she truly wanted or if her plans were aligned with her desires.
Her face twitched as she tried to form a smile, nodding. “Yes.” No explanation followed.
“I see.” Finn nodded, observing the look on her face. “If that is what you want, then… what choice do I have to make?”
“Thank you.” Nina drew a deep breath, clearing her throat as she pushed herself up. She tried to keep it together, forcing out a smile even if that was the last thing she felt she could do at the moment. “Since that is settled, I’ll leave you first.”
Having said that, Nina stared at him for a few seconds, as if to etch the look on his face in her memory, before walking away. As soon as she turned her back on him, her neck tightened, and she held her breath.
‘Don’t cry,’ she told herself. ‘Don’t cry, Nina. This is the right thing to do.’
One step away from the table felt like it took a lifetime of energy. However, she still forced and dragged her feet for the next step. One by one, little by little, the distance between her and Finn grew wider. And as she did so, she told herself that this was the right thing to do.
Was it rash? Perhaps it was. But ending things now was easier, wasn’t it?
Staying in a relationship, knowing she had been lied to multiple times just because he believed ignorance was bliss, was more insulting than upsetting. Even if they had talked about their careers and agreed not to focus on work when they were together, that didn’t mean he should lie to her.
‘Ignorance was bliss, indeed,’ she told herself, continuing on her way. ‘Until last night… our relationship was happy. There might be no perfect relationship, but what we had was perfect.’
That was until last night because now, all she could think about weren’t the lies he told her, but the ones she actually listened to. Did he love her? Was everything he showed her the truth or something he wanted her to see?
Surely, last night’s experience was eye-opening, and Nina didn’t want to be in the same position as Lily.
Breaking up with Finn hurt her like hell. She couldn’t even breathe properly at the moment. However, it would devastate her if she saw his true colors once she was already trapped in this thing called marriage. Moreover, if she didn’t end this relationship now, she knew she wouldn’t be happy again. Or rather, there wouldn’t be a time when she wouldn’t question whether what he was saying was the truth or just another lie.
When Nina found herself outside the establishment, she huffed a sharp breath as tears rolled down her cheeks.
‘This is the right thing to do,’ she told herself. ‘Don’t look back because if you do… you might hurt yourself even further.’
‘I am the one who called off the engagement,’ she reminded herself, dragging her feet as she wiped her tears with the back of her hand. ‘You’ve done the right thing. This is for you, and I’m sure that in the future, you’ll thank me.’
Even if it hurts, let go.
Even if it felt like her heart was falling bit by bit with every step, she had to move forward.
And even if she knew she might have to start all over again with a life and future without him, she couldn’t stop now.
A decision was made, and she had to take responsibility.

This was the right thing to do.
This wasn’t what she wanted or wished for, but the situation called for it.
Thus, she had to do what she had to do… for herself.

Meanwhile, inside the restaurant, Finn stared at the vacant seat across from him. His expression didn’t change in the slightest, like a statue frozen in time.
[Your personal life and your business… they might be two different things, but at one point, the lines blur.]
“Let’s call off the engagement.” Nina’s voice echoed in his mind, making his jaw tighten a little.
Finn took a deep breath and leaned back, huffing through his parted lips. He ran his tongue across his inner cheek, letting out dry laughter as he thought of his short exchange with Nina. He had watched her walk away earlier, expecting her to look back or stop. But alas, she didn’t.
Nina kept walking and walking. Her steps might have faltered from time to time, but she didn’t stop. She didn’t even look back, nor did she peek at him. She just… left.
“She…” he trailed off, snapping his eyes back to the empty seat across from him. “… changed.”
And he didn’t know whether to be happy about it or not.
Shifting his eyes to the entrance of the restaurant, another shallow breath slipped past his lips. “Even if they do not remember what happened, I guess a part of them—a part of their hearts—remembers their dreadful end.”
