Chapter 641: Life is truly full of surprises
[FLASHBACK]
“Oh.” Finn’s steps slowed as his eyes landed on the figure seated at the long, white bar counter in the villa.
There, perched on a stool, was the beautiful Nina. Upon hearing his voice, Nina looked over her shoulder.
“Isn’t it a little too early for you to be drinking?” he mused with a smirk as he casually approached her, taking the stool one seat away, ensuring there was an empty chair between them.
Finn leaned against the counter, tilting his head slightly. His brows rose as he noticed that Nina seemed to have drunk quite a few glasses; it was only ten in the morning.
“If you’re looking for my husband, he’s not here.” Nina didn’t cast him another glance as she poured herself another drink. “Something happened, and he had to go. Didn’t he tell you that?”
“I’m here, aren’t I?” He smiled. “Well, anyway, that’s a shame. Just tell him I came by.”
Having said that, Finn casually pushed himself away from the stool while Nina continued drinking. Just as he took a step, he looked back at her with raised brows. Nina seemed to be ignoring him, drinking to wash down whatever she wanted to drown.
Finn was aware of Nina and her husband’s relationship. At least, he had an idea of the dynamic between them.
Nina was successful and came from a good family—even though she was adopted, she still had a solid reputation in the elite social circle. Her own achievements, her looks, and her reputation made her “acceptable” as a member of the Pierson Family. It was the same for her husband.
In the eyes of the public, they were a perfect couple. Although no one could stop others from saying Nina was lucky to marry into the Pierson Family, people envied her nonetheless. However, what others didn’t know was that Nina and Jonathan’s relationship was far from what one would expect.
‘Well,’ Finn shrugged subtly. ‘Not my business.’
He was about to leave when he noticed her arm as she chugged down her drink. There was a large bruise under her arm, as if she had used it to shield herself from something. Or perhaps she had braced herself for a bad fall.
But he knew at a glance it wasn’t the latter.
Looking up at her face, he saw her pouring herself another glass. “It’s still too early for you to drink so much,” he said instead of leaving. “I’m just saying… as a family friend.”
“A family friend?” she repeated, laughing quietly, though the mockery in her voice was evident. Nina slowly turned to face him, her eyes landing on his. “You’re not a family friend. You’re his friend, not mine.”
“I never said you were family.”
Nina arched a brow, turning on the stool to face him fully. “Excuse me?”
“You know what I’m saying,” Finn chuckled, his eyes squinting as always. “Just because you married into the family doesn’t mean you’re family. I think you understand what that means better than anyone.”
“…”
“I’ll head out now.” Finn tilted his head down slightly.
This time, Finn strode off without pausing or looking back. However, just as he reached the living area, he stopped upon hearing a scream from where he had come from. Looking back, he heard the echoes of glasses shattering and Nina’s screams.
“Hah. She’s intense.” Finn straightened his back and shook his head while looking back. He didn’t linger long, though. He walked away, leaving the household while still hearing her hysterical screams echoing throughout the villa.

Many times Finn had met Nina, but during all of those encounters, they had rarely talked or exchanged more than a few words. Perhaps that one encounter, where she was drinking so early and he happened to be there, was the first and longest conversation they had.
He knew her to be fierce, bold, and a little greedy. She was the type who wouldn’t mind using others or stepping on them to reach her goals. It wasn’t the greatest trait, but it served her well in the world of the Piersons.
Standing in front of the window, Finn slowly gazed down at the one-way ticket Zoren had handed him earlier that day. A shallow breath slipped past his lips as he looked back at the unconscious Nina on the bed. He sauntered toward her and sat down in the chair beside the bed, his eyes fixed on her.
“He asked me… why I saved you when you should’ve been dead,” he whispered, batting his eyes slowly. “Hah.”
The corner of his mouth hooked up as he let out a shallow laugh while shaking his head. Cocking his head back, Finn stared at the ceiling, contemplating what would happen now.
Zoren giving him a one-way ticket meant things would get serious. It was akin to saying a building would collapse, and most of the time, when something like that happened, even those nearby could get hurt by the rubble.

“What do I do with you now, hmm?” he wondered aloud, staring at Nina with genuine curiosity in his eyes. “Not taking you mean… losing everything, but taking you with me is the same. Poor little thing. Look where your greed has taken you.”
“All those years trying to prove to everyone that you’re better… all those years fighting for the title you think should be yours…” Slowly, Finn rested his arms over his legs as he leaned forward, squinting his eyes at her. “… everything’s for naught, isn’t it?”
“Life is truly full of surprises,” he added under his breath, just as he heard the door quietly slide open. He glanced over his shoulder, only to see the nurse walking in. Thus, Finn didn’t dwell on it and stayed in his seat.
At this moment, Finn should have looked back to check because if he had, he would have seen a hand fall between the door and the jamb, revealing a bloody sight outside the ward.
But alas, he didn’t, and all he heard next was a familiar noise echoing before he felt a metallic round pressed against the back of his head.
“Hah,” he let out a dry laugh, running his tongue across his inner cheek. “I wonder… who…?”
Slowly, he lifted his cunning eyes, gazing at the window to see the person’s reflection behind him. He almost laughed when he saw who it was.
