Chapter 651: Did she make the right call?
Was this meeting a blessing in disguise? Or were the stars just aligning? Was this meant to happen? For Penny and Finn to be in the same place?
Not long ago, Penny had been stressing about Finn, Jonathan Pierson, and many others.
Questions like: Where in the world did Finn come from? What was his agenda? Did he know about Penny? These questions had been filling her mind until her head was spinning.
But today, he answered quite a few of them.
Everything he said could be a lie, but there was no harm in considering everything he had confessed. So long as she was careful, she wouldn’t disregard everything just because she couldn’t trust him.
Now, he mentioned that person: Jonathan Pierson.
Penny drew a deep breath, trying to maintain her composure because right now, she was tempted to ask one question: ‘Where is Jonathan Pierson?’
“Ohh…” Finn chuckled, noticing how her expression darkened. “You know him?”
“No, I don’t know him.” Penny shook her head before she carefully added a hint, “There’s no Jonathan Pierson in the Pierson family registry, Mr. Davis. How would I know him?”
“There isn’t.” Finn cast his eyes down. “But there used to be.”
A shift in mood settled in the private dining room before Finn lifted his gaze to her. “You asked me why I want to be your ally. That’s one of the answers.”
“Hmm?”
“Jonathan Pierson… he’s not here,” Finn said, furrowing his brows. “Don’t you find that strange? A man who was once so publicly involved with the Pierson family is not here in this lifetime.”
A glint flickered across Finn’s eyes as he leaned his arm against the edge of the table, a twisted smirk plastered on his face. “Penelope, doesn’t that alarm you a bit? There’s only one possibility for why this happened.”
That was, Jonathan Pierson was one of them.
A moment of silence fell between them, their eyes locked on each other. Finn arched a brow at her as he leaned back while Penny’s stoic expression remained.
“If you’re wondering how that’s possible, well, Jonathan Pierson is a bastard of William Pierson,” Finn explained to clear up the confusion. “He was taken home to fight—well, Zoren Pierson. That man… is a scary man.”
‘In your first life… were you also Renren’s informant?’ was what she wanted to ask. However, Penny stopped herself. ‘It’s easier to engage in this conversation, but at the same time, I can’t be reckless.’
“If Jonathan Pierson changed his life, then… we don’t know what’s coming for us.”
“We?” Penny snorted. “I don’t think that’s my problem.”
“Oh, it is your problem.”
“And why would that be my problem?”
The corner of Finn’s lips curled up, but then he felt his phone vibrate. “A minute,” he said as he pulled out his phone, checking the message he received.
“As much as I would like to stay and entertain you with a story I made up out of boredom, I forgot I have a business to run,” he remarked as he looked back at her. “This is the part where I should say… to be continued?”
“Haha.” Penny ran her tongue across her inner cheek, her sharp eyes glinting at the playful look on his face. He didn’t have to tell her what was on his mind; she could read it clearly from his expression.
“I can’t show you all my cards in one go, can I? Otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll stop contacting me,” he joked as he slipped his phone into his suit pocket. Slowly, he got up from his seat and walked away from the table.
Standing to the side, he gazed at her and smiled. “I’m not leaving my contact number since I know the Prime Group has their means of getting it. Call me when you’re available. It was a lovely chat, and I had fun. I feel like I’ve found my new best friend.”
“Let’s see each other more often, Penelope.” He tilted his head slightly down and turned his back on her, ready to leave. But just as he took a step, Penny spoke.
“You told me previously… before all that nonsense about a made-up story that I could ask you one question…” Penny trailed off, her eyes on the empty seat across from her. “I haven’t used that, have I?”
Finn chuckled and looked back at her. “Curious who killed me?”

“No.” Penny slowly turned her head in his direction, looking him straight in the eye. “I’m not curious about that because I know that one of these days, you’ll come begging me on your knees for protection.”
This time, Penny also rose from her seat and faced him. “Did you… love Nina?”
Throughout this meeting, Penny had kept her thoughts to herself. Even if she was tempted to raise a question, she had stopped herself from doing so. However, that didn’t mean she didn’t have one important question that didn’t relate to their previous topic.
“Tell me, Finn Davis,” Penny’s voice was cold and stern, and her eyes were sharp and decisive. “Did she make the right call in calling off the engagement?”
Despite being a little too chatty previously, Finn didn’t answer right away. Instead, he stared at Penny as his squinting eyes widened. The smile lines on his face faded, and for the first time, his expression grew serious.
“Yes,” he breathed out, nodding. “She made the right call.”
A short smile appeared on his face as he returned her gaze. “Is that all you want to know? If you’re asking whether I approached her with ulterior motives, then the answer is yes. Did I love her? No. To me, she is but an instrument for my survival.”
“I’m saying this because, like I said, I’m trying to be your ally,” he added in the same emotionless tone. “And this is my honest answer.”
Having said that, Finn lowered his head slightly and resumed his steps. This time, he didn’t stop as he walked away, his steps unfaltering, just like his words. Meanwhile, Penny was left standing in the same spot, staring at the closed door where he had exited.
“I guess…” she whispered, fluttering her eyelashes ever so gently. “… he is human with that foolish side of his, just now.”
