Chapter 657: The calm before the storm was reaching its final days
All his life, Finn never thought that there was anything that bothered him on a certain level. How could he be bothered when he knew what was coming for him and what to avoid? But right this second, a wish rose in his heart.
Let this person… this person who was crawling his way into Cassandra’s life be someone else.
Finn stared at the glass of drink in his hand, repeating that sentiment like a morning mantra. After all, he had learned from Zoren that it was better to hope for something than nothing at all. He had learned from Zoren that the law of attraction had always been real.
It might be a little late, but he hoped it would work.
“Hehe.” Cassandra giggled, her cheeks blushing as she stood in front of a dashing man in a casual sweater, trousers, and a pair of old moccasins. His hair was let down, its tips brushing against his thin-rimmed eyeglasses, which gave him a kind look.
“Right!” She cleared her throat, snapping out of the moment of admiration as she held his arm. “By the way, I bumped into a friend. Let me introduce you to him.”
Cassandra took a few steps back to where Finn was, her arm hooked around her date. “Finn!”
A glint flickered across Finn’s eyes as he straightened his back. Slowly, he turned his head and was not surprised that his prayers tonight had gone unheard.
“Finn, this is my date, Jonathan,” Cassandra introduced before looking at Jonathan. “Joe, this is Finn, my friend.”
Jonathan raised his brows briefly, casting her a curious look. Seeing his expression, she giggled and leaned closer to him, making him bend down a little.
“Yes, you’re right,” she said mischievously. “He’s my ex-fiancé. The one who dumped me.”
As she drew away, Cassandra winked at Finn while Jonathan smiled at her playfulness. Slowly, Jonathan faced Finn, catching the man as he stood up from the stool to face them.
Finn studied the man he was very familiar with. The first thing that came to mind was that Jonathan’s wardrobe had undergone a huge change. This wasn’t how he remembered the man dressing, even when he was at home.
“I’ve heard so much about you,” Jonathan said, extending his hand toward Finn. “Jonathan Russel.”
“Russel?”
Jonathan smiled kindly, keeping his hand open between them. Just when Finn thought he wouldn’t take it, he clasped Jonathan’s hand. Instead of a simple handshake, Finn stepped closer to lessen the distance between them.
“I think I’ve heard about the Russels… somewhere,” Finn said, leaning closer and turning his head away from Cassandra. “I am pleased to meet you, Jonathan… Russel.”
Jonathan smiled despite the tightening grip on his hand. “The pleasure is mine, Finn Davis,” he said, lowering his head a bit. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
Finn let out a dry laugh as he leaned away, staring at the man with a cunning smirk. Even if Jonathan dressed differently, he was still the same person Finn remembered. Jonathan was still as bold as ever, not even scared or attempting to bluff Finn.
But then again, why would Jonathan do that?
For sure, Jonathan already knew Finn could remember their past life the moment he changed schools. If Jonathan had been watching at that time, then he would know. And if Finn could remember their past life, he also knew that Jonathan had tweaked his life a bit as well.
Jonathan’s absence from the Pierson family affairs was a giant indicator.
“Uhm…” Cassandra darted her eyes between them, clearing her throat as she noticed the abrupt tension. “Hello? Is everything okay? You’re not going to fight over me, are you?”
Both men maintained friendly smiles as they faced her at the same time.
“Cass, I’m glad to see you doing well,” said Finn, finally letting go of Jonathan’s hand. “But I have to go.”
“Oh.” Cassandra frowned a little. “Well, take care on your way.”
Finn nodded at her with a smile before turning to Jonathan again. “It’s a pleasure to meet you and… have fun.”
“We will.” Jonathan nodded reassuringly, watching Finn walk past him. But just as Finn’s shoulder brushed against his, he grabbed Finn’s arm to stop him.
Slowly, Jonathan turned his head and looked at him. A cunning smirk hooked up at the corner of his mouth while Finn’s expression mirrored his.
“Be careful on your way, Finn Davis,” Jonathan whispered, but his voice was clearer than the jazz music in the background. “I heard there are a lot of drunk drivers in Anteca.”

Finn’s smirk twisted as he laughed. “Thank you for the reminder. I’d say the same for you.” He lowered his head and raised his brows playfully. “Anteca has always been a good spot to walk around until it’s not.”
Both of them gazed at each other, the corners of their eyes creasing as their expressions sharpened despite their smiles. After a moment, Jonathan let him go and followed Finn’s figure with his gaze.
“Naughty!” Cassandra jumped in front of him, poking his chest playfully. She squinted at him. “Jealous now?”
Jonathan chuckled. “He’s your ex, so a little.”
“Oh, come on! You know we didn’t get engaged by choice. Besides, Finn is a good friend of mine, so be nice to him!”

Meanwhile, when Finn walked away, the smile on his face quickly faded. His eyes sharpened as a glint flickered in them.
‘Jonathan Pierson,’ he thought, his hands balling into tight fists as he loosened his tie with the other hand. ‘Oh, this is going to be very interesting.’
Yet, while it might be interesting, it was also going to be dangerous.
As Finn stepped out of the establishment, he saw his car parked outside the bar. His steps didn’t falter as he approached it, reaching for the backseat door when he caught a light from the corner of his eyes.
Vrooom!
Out of instinct, Finn jumped back as a motorcycle drove past the small space between him and the car. For a second, he was frozen before he turned his head toward the broken side mirror, and then looked at the rear of the motorcycle that continued to speed away.
“Hah.” He scoffed, looking back at the establishment and ignoring the worried questions from the driver who jumped out immediately. “I guess I was at the top of his list.”
