Chapter 661: speck of dust
Getting disliked was something Nathaniel was so used to. Even his own parents disliked him to the point of abandoning him at a young age. Growing up, it was the same for the people around him. They disliked him for no reason, bullied him, and took advantage of him.
So would anyone blame Nathaniel if he ended up as someone who didn’t care about other people? Would anyone blame him if he lived for himself and only for himself alone?
“That — that’s it?” he blurted out in disbelief, almost laughing to himself at her ridiculous reasoning. “You want me dead because you dislike me?”
“If that isn’t clear, then it’s because I find you an eyesore.” Penny shrugged apathetically. “Don’t tell me you don’t know that already? You scheme against people and then act like a victim. Instead of trying to save yourself, you simply cry and throw tantrums.”
Penny slowly leaned forward and arched a brow. “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself? It’s pathetic.”
“…” Nathaniel slowly cast his wide eyes down, balling his hands on the surface of the table. His shoulders tensed, trembling mildly as he let out his frustration with a light scoff. “What do you know?”
“I know enough to see how pathetic you are.”
He ground his teeth, glaring at her. “Hah! You’re… you’re ridiculous!”
“Is that a surprise?”
“Hah!”
“Wait.” The corner of Penny’s mouth hooked up as she looked at him with amusement. “Don’t tell me… you don’t know how pathetic you are? Did you actually believe you are worth more than what you think you are?”
Nathaniel slammed his hands on the table, rising to his feet. His heart raced, making his breathing heavy. He fixed his eyes on her, balling his hands into tight fists.
“Miss Penelope, is this why you asked me to join you for dinner?” he scoffed. “If so, then thank you for the invitation. I appreciate that you asked the kitchen to make all my favorite dishes, but I have to decline.”
He took a deep breath and sneered at her. “If killing me is what you want, then do it. Or are you too afraid to get your hands dirty, resorting to insulting me and my entire existence instead? Which one of us is more pathetic?”
Having said his piece, Nathaniel huffed and turned to leave. He would rather dig the entire night than sit at this dining table while she criticized him for her own entertainment. At the end of the day, Nathaniel was here because of Zoren, not because of Penny.
“That’s a lot of nerve from you, you know that?” Penny mused as she watched him walk away. “To believe you’re worth more than anything when, in fact, we are all just as small as a speck of dust in this world.”
This time, Nathaniel paused and slowly looked back at her.
“I’m not scared of dirtying my hands, Nathaniel,” she continued in a knowing tone. “If I want you dead, you’re dead. I would kill you myself if I wanted to, but here you are, still alive. Aren’t you taking life for granted?”
“Taking life for granted?” he laughed. “So, not staying in a place where I am not needed and where I am being openly insulted is not taking life for granted?”
“No.” A chuckle escaped her as she shook her head. “Sit down.”
“No, thank you.”
“Fine.” Penny rocked her head in understanding. “Then, if you do not want to sit down, your things are already packed. Leave this place.”
“What?”
Penny shrugged. “My husband is not interested in you, and I’m tired of watching you ruin our beautiful garden. Why stay here? You were right. This place doesn’t need you.”
“…” For a second, Nathaniel was stunned into silence. “You’re letting me go?”
“Are you deaf?” she cocked her head to the side. “Or did you find a passion for digging? Even if you want to dig more, I’m afraid I can’t keep you here. We’re short on budget.”
Who would believe that they were short on budget? Zoren was the richest man in Anteca, and his influence extended internationally. Another mouth to feed would not be a problem. However, Nathaniel grasped what Penny meant by that.
She didn’t need him anymore.
Digging graves for her was something she had grown tired of. This meant she wanted him for something else. Nathaniel understood the hidden meaning of her remarks.
Its literal translation was: “What can a good-for-nothing like him bring to the table?”

Slowly, Nathaniel turned around and faced her. His expression was solemn, his jaw tightening. His fist loosened as he took a deep breath.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked under his breath, watching her slight smile stretch a little. “I already told Mr. Pierson, who availed of my services, and I simply tied Patricia Miller because I found out you guys had a long history. Moreover, she’s stupid. Very easy to manipulate.”
‘Is that what you also thought of me in the past?’ was what Penny wanted to ask him, but decided it was unnecessary. ‘My life in the past and now is very different. Holding on to my grievances is not my priority. My priority is to maintain the peace in this life and to stay out of prison.’
“Do you think I’m interested in her?” Penny tilted her head to the side. “Sure, I was upset that you schemed to hurt my husband, even using our precious memories together just to entrap him. I found it cruel, though I am curious.”
Penny batted her eyes ever so tenderly. “How did you know about our Thursday arrangement?”
“If you’re asking me that, does that mean you still haven’t figured it out?” he scoffed, only to see Penny nonchalantly shrug. Her reaction told him it wasn’t a question she was desperate to have an answer. “I was given the concept, okay? William Pierson told me to use Zoren Pierson’s weakness, and so I came up with this.”
“I see.” Her reaction wasn’t big, proving to him this wasn’t what she was interested in. Slowly, Penny leaned her arms against the table, squinting at him. “Then can you tell me in all honesty… why did you go by the alias Jonathan Pierson?”
A glint flickered across her eyes as she studied the confusion on his face. Nathaniel tilted his head a little to the side before he said,
“That’s what William Pierson told me. They’re orders.”
