Chapter 662: Is this the twist I didn’t see coming?
Orders.
According to Nathaniel, his operation wasn’t that complicated. He would receive requests and then ask his clients for some information to ensure a better outcome. After all, Nathaniel was known for his efficient work and good results.
Penny didn’t doubt that.
In other words, after gathering little information from his client, it was Nathaniel who would concoct the whole plan. He was responsible for starting the scheme and continuing it until the end. His client would only be there to harvest when the time was ripe.
At this particular request, though, he was asked to use Jonathan Pierson as an alias.
“I see.” Penny nodded in understanding. “Obviously, you know that there’s no person named Jonathan Pierson in the Pierson family registry.”
“That’s why I didn’t mind. After all, I’m going to use an alias, anyway.”
“Right.”
Nathaniel huffed, becoming a bit calmer as they talked. “If you’re satisfied, then I’m leaving.”
“Okay.”
Having said that, Nathaniel idled and studied her lack of interest in him. He sighed and turned on his heel, about to leave, when Penny spoke again.
“If you step out of here, do you think you’re going to survive?”
He chuckled derisively. “That’s none of your business.”
“It is my business if you want to live and change your pathetic ways.” She shrugged once more, watching him look back at her again. The corners of her mouth hooked up the moment their eyes met. “My husband is not interested in you, and honestly, I’m not interested in you either… until I heard about your operation.”
Slowly, Penny pushed herself up, keeping her gaze locked with his. “It’s interesting, so I thought of keeping you close.”
“What?” he laughed airily. “After insulting me to the point of degrading me, you want me to… work with you?”
“For me,” she corrected. “I’m not working with you, but if you want to live and extend your pathetic life, I can help. In return, I want you to do things for me. You’re used to working alone, but if you accept my offer, there will be orders, structure, hierarchy, discipline, and consequences.”
Penny paused, letting her words sink in. “I’ll give your pathetic life meaning. I’m good at that. But if you don’t want to, then… let it be. I’ll leave you alone as long as you leave me and my family alone. Otherwise, you’d find yourself choosing which of the pits you’d like to rest in.”
“You have a whole night to think about my offer.” Penny placed the cloth beside her plate. “Good night, Nathaniel.”
With that said, Penny walked away without stopping or looking back at him. Nathaniel, on the other hand, stared at her figure in silence.
“Hah…” A shallow breath slipped past him as he dragged the chair back and sat down again. He glanced at the food in front of him, noticing that all the dishes laid out on the table were actually his favorite foods. There was even one from a convenience store—he recognized it as if it was still in the packaging while on the plate.
“I didn’t notice it earlier,” he whispered to himself, staring at the food in silence. “She does know a lot.”
Now that he thought about it, this wasn’t her method of a last supper. Penny had asked him to join her for dinner, not because she wanted to treat him to his last meal. She invited him to dinner to tell him in a very subtle yet bold manner… she knew him.
There was nothing he could hide from her. These dishes were proof.
“Hah…” Another shallow laugh escaped him as he reached out for the packed food on the plate. He stared at it, flipping it a bit, only to see that its expiry date was a day from now. His expression contorted, a sense of dread crawling from the pit of his stomach to his heart.
“She even knows that I only eat this one day before its expiry date,” he whispered, turning his head in the direction where Penny had left. “Does she also know I buy this stuff before its expiry date because they are sold cheaper than regular prices?”
At this point, he wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.
A deep breath escaped him as he unwrapped the packaging and took a huge bite. There were more dishes on the table, but he focused on this one. Sitting idle in the chair, Nathaniel had to seriously reconsider her offer.
‘I came here because… I want to join the Specters,’ he thought. ‘I know it wasn’t going to be easy, but considering how long I’ve been held captive here shows that Zoren Pierson is not interested in me or my skills.’
‘That woman, on the other hand…’ His lips curved down a little as his jaw tightened. ‘I’m certain she’s not interested in my skill set either.’

Again, Nathaniel found himself looking in the direction where Penny had gone. “Just what is going on in her mind? I can’t tell.”
But deep in his heart, he sort of figured out why Penny asked him to join her. He might be wrong, but right now, all he could think about was that Penny might not be interested in his skills, but rather, in him.
What was it about him that piqued her interest? He didn’t know. He didn’t even know why she was angry with him in the first place, but that didn’t matter.
“Life… is surely full of twists and turns,” he whispered again, taking another bite and chewing it slowly. “Is this the twist I didn’t see coming?”
Perhaps Nathaniel wasn’t meant to join the Specters. Even with his skills, he probably did not fit in, or rather, they just couldn’t trust him, considering the Phantom Circle was smaller than other organizations but a lot more organized and strict in its structure.
As for Penny…
Nathaniel took another big bite and sighed. “Is there a better option?” he asked himself, tilting his head back, eyes on the ceiling.
“Leaving here is a continuous chase of death,” he whispered. “But staying… it means… I’m giving up my freedom.”
At the end of the day, Nathaniel understood the entirety of Penny’s offer. She wouldn’t stop him from leaving, but if he joined, he would have to follow her orders without question.
“Hah.” He sighed deeply. “Just what did I do in my past life to have such a karmic life?”
