Chapter 684: Lack of attachment
[Flashback of the Young Finn Davis]
“Mom?” The young Finn, about four years old, came downstairs while hugging a drawing book. He had an innocent smile on his face — excited, even — because he had been waiting for this day to come.
His parents promised that today would be his day. Just him and them.
“Yes, I see — well, I… can’t, okay?” The woman, standing in the living room while holding a tray with the phone between her shoulder and ear, looked a little impatient with the person on the other end of the line. “What?! Are you kidding me? We already agreed — what do you mean it can’t happen today if I’m not there?”
Outraged, the woman dropped the tray on the coffee table and held the phone. She ran her free hand through her hair, walking away to talk more fiercely to the person on the other end of the line.
Finn pressed his lips into a thin line, looking up the stairs, only to find his father rushing down while wearing his suit.
“Daddy?” called the young Finn, earning a smile from his father when the latter came to where he was.
“Hey, buddy…” His father ruffled his hair and smiled, squatting down in front of him.
“Where are you going?” asked the young Finn innocently, even though a part of him already figured out where his father was headed.
The man stretched his mouth and smiled. “Son, Daddy just needs to sort things out at the company, okay? Don’t worry. I’ll come back as soon as I can.”
“Oh…”
“It’ll be very quick!” the man promised, raising his voice to sound cheerful. “You won’t wait too long, okay?”
Finn pressed his lips into a thin line, nodding at his father in understanding. Even at this age, he understood that his parents were important people. Therefore, they were always busy and had no other time for anything else… including him.
“Okay.”
“Good boy.” The man smiled, but there was a flicker of guilt in his eyes. Even so, he knew he had no choice. “Hon, I’m…”
Before the man could say anything, the woman standing not far away from them shouted.
“Fine! I’ll go!” the woman hissed, ending the call and turning around. When she saw her husband squatting down in front of their son, her mouth opened and closed. “Oh, Finn… you’re there!”
The woman quickly put down her phone on the table, rushing to her husband and son. Just like her husband, she bent over and rested her hands on her knees.
“Mommy, are you leaving too?” Finn asked, blinking innocently.
The woman smiled at him wryly. “Well, honey… the thing is, Mommy has to do something first.”
“Oh…”
“But don’t worry! It won’t be long! Mommy will be back before you even know it!” she reassured him nervously, patting Finn’s shoulder. “I just… had to go for a while, okay? But I’ll be back.”
Finn pressed his lips together and nodded. “It’ll be quick?”
“Of course, honey.” His mother nodded without a second hesitation. “Mom and Dad promised you that we’d stay today, right? After this, we’ll be back as soon as we can!”
“Your mother is right, Finn.” His father backed her up. “Do you want any toys so we can buy some on our way home?”
Finn just shook his head, his mouth stretching from ear to ear. “I’ll just wait for Mommy and Daddy!”
“Oh, Finny…” The woman couldn’t help but ruffle his hair, smiling appreciatively at her son. Even her husband couldn’t help but appreciate just how understanding their son was.
However, the couple didn’t idle any longer as they quickly left. The woman didn’t even bother changing, only putting on a blazer and doing her makeup in the car. She and her husband went off in separate cars, each heading to their respective business.
As they left in a hurry, Finn stood by the main door and waved at them with a smile.
“Young Master.” A middle-aged woman, Finn’s nanny, came to his side. “Since your parents left for a while, should we play together?”

Finn shook his head. “I’m okay, Nana. I’ll wait for Mommy and Daddy. They said it would be quick!”
Having said that, the young Finn walked back inside and went to his room. He was still hugging the sketchbook, his smile still on his face.
His parents promised him that it would be quick and that they would be back before he knew it. Moreover, they promised that they would spend today with him. Thus, Finn held onto that promise.
Little did the young Finn know, today was not the only day his parents would break a promise.
After killing some time doing more art of a happy family and playing with the servant, he found himself sitting in the living area, watching the door for any sign of his parents. As time passed, every second felt like minutes, minutes felt like hours, and hours felt like forever.
When his parents came home, he had already gone to bed.
The next day, Finn woke up to find countless toys placed in his room. However, when he went to look for his parents, they had already left for more work. The next day, he woke up to find new things again, but his parents would be gone once more.
It became a cycle of promises, lies, and constant disappointments, until eventually, Finn would find himself waking up without even batting an eye at the new gifts in his room. He would go through his day, no longer looking for his parents, and before he knew it, he was already an adult with a lack of sense of attachment.
An adult who had no expectations from people at all. Someone who saw love, family, and affection as something with little to no value. He grew up believing those things didn’t exist, and the people around him proved it — they justified and solidified that belief.
It was why he was never afraid to step on others for his own benefit.
Why would he?
Wasn’t that the normal practice in the world?
It was a dog eat dog world. If one was lazy, time would consume them. Everyone was running out of time and he didn’t want to waste his — just like how he saw the people around him not waste theirs.
But now, after two lifetimes, after changing just a little bit of his life with the thought of survival, why was someone crying for him… as if he deserved it?
He didn’t deserve it, especially not from the person he had constantly lied to, used, and hurt. He didn’t deserve those tears.
