Chapter 697: I don’t owe you anything. You owe me.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The man ducked the moment he heard the first sound of gunfire. He instinctively covered his head, hiding under the table.
Thud!
He flinched when a body thudded onto the table above him, before falling right in front of him. The man’s breath hitched, his eyes shaking as he gazed at the person whose life had been taken by a bullet.
It was one of the men who had been pointing a pistol at him moments earlier. The other man’s eyes were still wide open, staring at him from under the table.
“Hah…” he breathed out, knowing he had to run as far away from here as possible. But how could he escape when the gunfire was continuous?
Another loud thud rang behind him. Looking back, he saw that the man who had previously aimed a gun at him had been gunned down. Before he could think about what to do next, he heard the door slide open.
“Shit—”
“Get out!” Hugo yelled as he grabbed the man from under the table, glaring at him fiercely. The man slowly looked up, causing Hugo to squint slightly. “You’re… younger than I expected.”
After saying that, Hugo dragged the man by the collar. At the same time, he lifted his pistol and shot down the person who was approaching the partitioned room. He glanced at the broken partition, indicating that someone had gotten away. However, chasing after them wasn’t the plan right now.
“Come with me—”
“Wait!” The man grabbed Hugo’s wrist, stopping him. He looked at Hugo with wide eyes. “This place is surrounded.”
“I know,” Hugo replied impatiently. “That’s why we need to go.”
The man clenched his teeth, clearly displeased about something. He planted his feet firmly to resist Hugo’s dragging.
“What? You want to die?” Hugo hissed, his eyes glinting.
“Why did you come back?” the man asked. “I told you to get out, not save me.”
Out of impatience and irritation, Hugo grabbed the man by the back of the head and pulled him closer aggressively.
“Listen here, Mr. Information,” Hugo muttered under his breath. “I don’t owe you anything. You owe me. You got that?”
The man took a deep breath, holding Hugo’s fiery gaze. He gulped a little and exhaled heavily. “Follow me. I know a different way.”
Once again, the two of them sized each other up before Hugo released him. Taking the lead, Hugo glanced around before stepping out. The man followed, knowing Hugo was his only way out.
If he could live, why not?
Even if he had to owe Hugo, it was better than dying at the hands of someone who had come into his territory to claim his business.
“Hey!” the man called to get Hugo’s attention. “Here!”
Hugo looked back at him, only to see men in the same uniform appearing in the distance behind the man. Without a word, he raised his pistol, pointing it straight at the man.
“Hey!” the man yelled, his breath hitching. He nearly bit his tongue when Hugo opened fire. For a second, his heart stopped, and he was stunned to find he was still alive.
“Let’s go!” Hugo’s voice snapped him back to reality, making him look back to see a few men on the floor.
“Uh…” the man gulped, following Hugo to the secret passage where they could escape safely.
After twists and turns, taking one door and then another, navigating the complexity of the hidden passages underground, Hugo found himself climbing a ladder in a narrow space.
“Where the hell is this?” he blurted out, pausing on the ladder as the other man climbed ahead of him.
“I don’t have time to explain; this was confidential information,” the man panted, picking up his pace. “It’s important to get out first. The sooner, the better.”

“Weren’t you about to die with dignity minutes ago?”
“That was earlier. Things have changed.”
Hugo shook his head mildly, stopping again as the man halted. “What? Something’s wrong?”
“Hehe.” The man laughed and looked down at him. “We’re here. Hang tight a bit.”
Hugo arched a brow, tilting his head slightly as he watched the man push something. He squinted, seeing the man remove something before faint lights began shining down on them.
“Is that…?”
“Heh.” The man smirked as he glanced down at Hugo, pushing the heavy metal cover with all his might. Since the cover was heavy, it took him a while to push it aside completely. When there was enough space for a person, he didn’t waste a second and climbed up. Hugo followed.
“Where…” Hugo trailed off as he climbed up and saw an alley where he was. Looking around, his mouth fell open before his eyes landed on the man. “You… are a genius.”
“Haha!” The man laughed out loud, offering his hand to Hugo. “Come. We’re just a block away from here.”
Hugo glanced at the hand and clasped it, pulling himself out of the manhole. As soon as he jumped out, he dusted himself off.
“Just a block away from the bar?” he said, casting the man a look. “Then we should go.”
“We should.”
“Before that, I need answers.”
“Right now?”
“Yes.”
The man clenched his teeth, looking around the alley they had emerged from nervously. “Fine!” he remarked, facing Hugo. “These men have been on my tail, alright?”
“Why? What did you do?”
“Penelope.”
Hugo squinted as soon as he heard his sister’s name, grabbing the man’s collar and taking it as an immediate threat. He pushed the man against the wall, pressing the pistol under his chin without hesitation.
“Why are you mentioning my sister with that filthy mouth of yours?” Hugo breathed out, pressing the muzzle harder as his eyes glinted. “I might’ve saved you, but I don’t mind killing you myself. What do you want from her, Merrick?”
The man held his hands to the side, hearing cars and people walking past the alley while the gun was pressed against his throat.
“Chill, man, okay?” Merrick, the man at the top of the Information Center, sighed. “Chill, it’s not—”
“Why?” Hugo pressed the muzzle even harder, uninterested in anything but the answer he was seeking. “What do you want from Penny?”
“Money!”
“What?”
Merrick hissed. “When Penelope Bennet came by, I was interested in her. So… I tried to dig up information about her until I found out she was swapped as a child. I thought since Penelope is rich, she might want to know how she was swapped. I dug into it. Then those guys started showing up, alright? That’s it!”
