Chapter 699: Technically your fault
[Green Valley General Hospital]
As soon as Penny heard the news, she rushed to the hospital with Zoren. It was strange for her to rush to two different hospitals for her family.
“Second Brother—” Penny’s breath hitched as she slid the door open, only to see Hugo seated on the edge of the bed, massaging his shoulder.
For a moment, Penny studied her Second Brother until Hugo snapped his eyes in her direction.
“Uh… Penny…?”
“Second Brother,” she whispered, rushing to him and hugging him without a second thought.
Hugo winced a little but didn’t complain the moment he felt her body trembling. He placed a hand on her back slowly, snapping his eyes at Zoren, who was approaching them from behind her. Another deep sigh escaped him as soon as his eyes met Zoren’s.
—
“What?” Penny gasped faintly after hearing what Hugo had gone through that day. “You mean…?”
Slowly, she turned her head, and her eyes landed on the other bed across the room. It was separated by a partition, so she hadn’t noticed it earlier.
“You mean… that guy from the bar…” she trailed off, her brows rising. “… is in there?”
Hugo nodded, now wearing a patient’s gown, having been officially admitted as a patient. He glanced at the partition and then back at Penny.
“He knows a bunch of things, but that’s all I got from him,” he continued regretfully. “I should’ve interrogated him more right then and there.”
“How did you get out of there?” Penny asked under her breath, only to see Hugo cast Zoren a look. Her brows furrowed as she looked at her husband. “Why is he looking at you?”
“After the board meeting, I asked Second Brother for a favor,” Zoren explained. “I told him I’m placing guards in his shadows. After all, he had been seen a lot in the company, and since the board meeting went without a hitch, I’m afraid something big will happen in the family meeting, and that he would be targeted too…”
“That’s the favor you’re asking him?” Penny crinkled her nose. “It sounds wrong.”
“Well, it is a favor because if I planted them on Second Brother, I’m afraid my men would get hurt.”
“Ahh…” Penny nodded in understanding. “Well, fair enough.”
“Who would’ve thought they’d come in handy so soon?” Hugo commented, relieved that he had agreed, simply because he didn’t want to argue with Zoren.
After spending weeks with Zoren, just tagging along with him, Hugo had already understood that he would never win an argument against Zoren. Zoren would just keep pushing and pushing, and Hugo didn’t want that kind of stress.
But now, he was glad he agreed. Because if he hadn’t, Hugo feared he would have had to leave Merrick and let him die in that alley. Worse, he wouldn’t be talking right now. Zoren’s men arrived just in time, right before the person who shot Merrick shot him. Zoren’s men shot the man, but they purposely missed, just to scare him away.
From there, they dragged him and Merrick into a car and drove them straight to the hospital.
“That’s how I got in here.” Hugo smacked his lips, earning a slap on the shoulder from Penny. “Ouch!”
Penny glared at him, grinding her teeth in frustration. “Why were you even there to begin with? If Merrick already told you to get out, you should’ve gotten out!” Again, Penny slapped his shoulder, earning another “ow” from her Second Brother.
“Do you think you’re immortal? You might win in a one-on-one wrestling match, but I don’t think it’s safe when bullets are flying everywhere!”
Hugo’s brows rose, blinking innocently at her. Zoren, on the other hand, tilted his head to the side.
“But Penny, Second Brother has been to worse places in the world,” Zoren blurted out, only to bite his tongue when he saw her look in his direction. “You’re right. Second Brother, even if you think you have nine lives, they would’ve been depleted tonight.”
“Goodness… look at you. It feels like watching the making of Charles Bennet.” Hugo clicked his tongue continuously while shaking his head, earning another slap on his arm. “Penny, stop hitting me! It hurts!”
“That’s because you’re not even showing the slightest remorse!” Her face turned red with bitterness, her heart pounding.
For Hugo, this was a simple matter. But for Penny, it was more than just a casual fight. Hugo had died in her previous life, and with Finn and Allen already in critical condition, Penny couldn’t afford for her Second Brother to be in the hospital fighting for his life.

Seeing the look on her face, Hugo let out a shallow breath. “I’m sorry,” he expressed. “I’m sorry.”
Penny still wasn’t appeased. Not that anything he said would make her happy. She didn’t say anything back, letting out a sharp breath as she shifted her eyes to the other bed in the room.
“So, he actually dug up information about that, huh?” she murmured, squinting her eyes.
“What do you mean by that?” asked Hugo, earning a hum from her. When Penny looked back, she seemed a little confused, as if she hadn’t realized what she had blurted out. “You said he actually dug up about it. Penny, did you ask him to investigate?”
“Oh.” Penny opened and closed her mouth. “I said that aloud?”
Zoren and Hugo nodded, making her chuckle awkwardly.
“Well, first of all, I didn’t, okay?” She cleared her throat and straightened her back. “I did come to him to buy some information I didn’t actually need.”
“Then why…?” Hugo paused, pressing his lips together, realizing how and why Merrick had started an investigation. Zoren already caught on, smiling proudly at his wife.
“I need someone to investigate that matter.” Penny sighed. “But I can’t let my own men or myself do it. So, I showed up there to gain his interest. From what I heard, this guy is the curious type whose eyes light up at the thought of money.”
She paused, snapping her eyes back to them. “So, I thought a bad person who sells information to the highest bidder isn’t all that bad to put his life on the line for me. I mean, I’m paying if he dug up something useful.”
Zoren nodded in satisfaction while Hugo was having second thoughts about whether he actually knew his little sister.
“So, in a way…” Hugo hummed, trying to articulate his thoughts the best he could. “… that guy and what happened to me… is technically your fault?”
