Chapter 705: Play detective
The next day…
“Here is a copy of the dashcam footage, though I don’t think it’s any good.” The owner of the blue car handed the USB stick to Atlas, sighing. “The quality isn’t great, and I doubt it caught anything.”
Atlas smiled appreciatively at the owner. “Even so, thank you for giving me a copy. I really appreciate it.”
“Man…” The man looked at Atlas from head to toe, discerning that he was well off. “My car was parked far from the incident, though. Is it really going to be helpful?”
“Yes.” Atlas nodded. “I’ll take this with me. Thank you.”
“Ah…” The man waved a little, still confused as Atlas turned around. “Wait, can I ask you one question?”
“Yes?”
“Why aren’t the officers doing this?”
Atlas smiled at him. “They’re working on it, but I’d like to help hasten the investigation.”
“Ahh…” The man rocked his head. “This person must be very important to your family, huh?”
“Hmm?”
The man smiled and chuckled. “Because your brother came here as well to get a copy of the dashcam. I was surprised when you said you were coming here to talk.”
Deep lines appeared between Atlas’s brows as he looked at the owner of the blue car. “My brother?”
‘Hugo?’ Atlas thought. ‘He caught on so fast, but I guess that’s much better.’
“Yes!” the man exclaimed, chuckling happily. “I was a bit surprised, you know? Your brother is very popular, so to see him come into this neighborhood is surprising.”
Atlas’s thoughts halted upon hearing the man’s remark. “Uhm… I’m not following. My brother isn’t that popular.”
“Haha! You’re so humble. Slater Bennet is a superstar — he’s a great guy too! I asked for his autograph for my daughter. I now have a gift for her; her birthday is next week, and she’s a huge fan of his.” The man went on and on, unable to stop himself from sharing this moment with Atlas because he was too excited and amazed by it.
Who would have thought parking illegally would give him a chance to receive a visit from Slater Bennet?
Atlas, on the other hand, was completely confused. He looked at the man with total bewilderment, brows furrowed, as he watched the man laugh about getting an autograph.
“I see.” Atlas nodded in understanding, even though he couldn’t comprehend this at all. “Very well, thanks again.”
“Ahh… no problem!” The man waved, watching Atlas walk away slowly. When Atlas reached his car, the man let out a deep exhale. “I guess getting my car towed isn’t all that bad. I got an autograph from a celebrity and even got a visit from his rich brother! Hehe!”
********
Atlas sat in the backseat, deep in thought. He held the USB stick securely in his hand, but instead of reviewing it, he couldn’t help but wonder about what the man had said.
“Slater?” he murmured, confused. “Why did he get a copy of the dashcam?”
If this were Hugo, Atlas wouldn’t be surprised. Hugo was more the type to know these things. Atlas wouldn’t even be surprised if this was Penny as well. In other words, it wouldn’t be shocking if Hugo and Penny had beaten Atlas to this.
This was the first time Atlas had played detective, unlike those two.
“But Slater?” he hummed, squinting his eyes. “How? Why?”
Looking back at Slater’s activities, Atlas hadn’t paid much attention to his third brother. After all, Slater was always either at home or not, but that guy always complained about being bored. So, no one was stopping him from doing whatever he wanted — whatever it was. They didn’t want Slater bothering them.
“I guess he heard about what happened to Allen and is so bored that he thought of doing something to kill time,” Atlas told himself, shrugging as he considered it. “Surely, he’s lost his mind now.”
‘This is not something he should be playing around with,’ he thought, taking his phone out to scold Slater and stop him. ‘He probably thinks this is as simple as playing detective, but he has no idea this could be bigger than it appears.’

Having thought of that, Atlas dialed Slater’s number and waited for it to be picked up. But alas, Slater didn’t answer.
“What’s wrong with him?” he wondered, looking at the phone in dismay. “He usually answers any phone call since he stopped having activities.”
Again, Atlas dialed Slater’s number and listened to it ring. As he did so, he relaxed his body against the seat and leaned back.
Honk! Honk!
Arching a brow, Atlas heard loud honks from his side. But when he turned toward the window, his breath hitched as he saw another car speeding straight toward them.
For a second, Atlas felt like the world had slowed down. His mind went blank as his entire body froze. All he could do was hold his breath and brace for whatever was coming at them.
“Hah…” Atlas breathed out, reminded of the fishing trip his father had mentioned to him last night.
SCREECH!
One second later, sharp noises assaulted Atlas’s ears before the force of an abrupt turn erupted inside the car. To avoid the accident, the driver made an abrupt turn, leaving tire tracks on the road. Atlas held on to anything he could, but despite the force pulling him along, he still managed to look at the approaching SUV.
Atlas didn’t know why he even looked at the speeding SUV, but if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have seen another car coming from behind them that drove past them and crashed into the speeding SUV headed toward Atlas.
CRASH!
“Ah!” Atlas clenched his teeth as their car continued to make an abrupt turn, creating smoke from the tires. It took a moment for them to regain stability, the vehicle coming to a complete stop.
“Hah…” For a second, Atlas’s and the driver’s deep breaths were all they heard, still shocked at what had just happened. When they recovered, they realized they were still alive and unscathed.
“What just happened?” the driver blurted out, while Atlas had the same question.
Slowly, the two of them looked back in the direction they had originally been heading. All they saw was the SUV that almost hit them with a broken side, making a hasty turn as it tried to escape, despite the state of its car. Meanwhile, the car that crashed into the SUV — saving Atlas and the driver — had continued driving away and was now gone.
However, Atlas still remembered the color of the car that saved them.
It was a red sports car… exactly like Slater’s.
