Chapter 722: A good mom
Yugi’s confusion wasn’t a lie, even though he knew what had happened to Finn. How could Yugi not know when he was the one who sent people to follow him? But then again, Yugi had no idea just how serious Nina was about her engagement.
Yugi thought it was all just a game — a puppy love.
After all, Nina was too young to marry. Considering she was a smart woman, he knew she would eventually snap out of it. Penny was like that; she would lose her mind for a moment and then snap back to reality.
But from what he had heard from his family, it seemed Yugi had underestimated the situation.
“Goodness. That little beggar and her goldfish memory,” Jessa hissed, now eating some home-cooked meals in the living area of Yugi’s place. “How could she not tell you about all of this?”
“I think she told me,” Yugi said, just playing with his food, barely taking bites as he lost his appetite. “I just thought she wasn’t that serious.”
“Who? Nina?” Yuri frowned. “Yugi, you were only away for a few years, and you’ve forgotten your family’s personalities?”
“What a disappointment,” Jessa hissed, while her husband shook his head, speechless at Yugi’s remarks.
Yugi’s lips curved down deeper, glossing his eyes over his family, who had come here to fill him with guilt. Not that he hated them for it. His family wasn’t perfect, and sometimes they were toxic, but at the same time, he was at fault too.
After going against Jessa’s wishes many years ago and following Penny abroad, Yugi didn’t dare show his face to them again. He was scared to death. After all, he had used up all the courage he had in this lifetime when he snuck out of their home to catch his flight. He barely had any left.
“I’m sorry…” he muttered with a sigh. “Mom, I promise now that you’ve forgiven me—I mean, now that I see you, I’ll visit you until you’re sick of me.”
“You better not show up that frequently,” Yuri advised. “Mom doesn’t like it either.”
“Do it moderately,” Lester added. “Make her miss you, but not too much.”
“…” Yugi darted his eyes between his sister and father; they were just not making sense at all. But when he set his eyes on his mother, he smiled. “Got it, Mom. Make you miss me but not too much. Crystal clear.”
“Are you being condescending now?” Yuri scoffed.
“I’m being sincere! Stop twisting things—geez!” he hissed at his sister, clicking his tongue.
“Enough, you two.” Jessa glared at them. “You’re already adults, so don’t make me tell you to face the wall and repent.”
“…”
“Honey, you’re not serious about that, are you?” Lester chuckled nervously, but seeing the look on his wife, he knew she was serious. “Ahem! You better listen to your mom.”
At this point, Yuri and Yugi finally had something to agree on. How could their father live like this?
“Just eat.” Jessa huffed. “And after that, you should visit Nina. If not today, tomorrow. See how she’s doing.”
Yugi’s brows rose. “Why me?”
“Aren’t you the big brother?” Yuri chimed sarcastically. “Besides, if we go, she’ll just try not to worry us.”
“And she will not worry about me?” Yugi gasped, his face twisting in an ugly way as they all nodded at him. “That girl! How could she—I knew it! I was so nice to her that she took me for granted!”
Jessa, Yuri, and Lester simply shook their heads, continuing to eat their dinner while Yugi flared up. They didn’t bother listening to Yugi’s nonsense, letting it go in one ear and out the other.

Some time later, Yuri found comfort in the other room and bid them goodnight. She had come straight from work and tagged along when Jessa told her about her plan to ambush Yugi. Now that she had seen her rebellious brother, she could finally sleep peacefully.
As for Jessa and Lester, Yugi offered his bedroom to them, as there was another extra bed he could sleep on in the living room. Obviously, the parents took the offer and stayed over for the night.

“Did he leave?” Jessa stared at her husband, who was peeking through the small gap in the door.
Lester opened the door a little wider before he carefully closed it. He tiptoed his way back to the bed, sitting on the side.
“Honey, do you think he went to check on Nina?” he asked, even though they both knew that Yugi had told them he would visit Nina tomorrow. Yugi said he was too tired to leave, and that it was a little late already.
Jessa huffed, readjusting her position until her back was against the headboard. “Of course he would visit her. I guilt-tripped him enough to do that.”
“Haha.” Lester chuckled, scooting over to join her on the bed. “Just say that you know your children well.”
“Tsk.” She clicked her tongue, huffing for the umpteenth time. “That punk…”
Lester studied his wife’s side profile and smiled subtly. “Honey, it’s your fault that our son was too terrified to show his face to you again. Considering how you threatened him when he told you he wanted to follow Penny, even I would be terrified.”
“He still did it, anyway.”
“Hah… you knew he would go against your wishes back then, but you were still too harsh on him.” Lester leaned back against the headboard, reaching out to hold his lioness of a wife. “Why did you go against his plans back then, though? Until now, I had no idea.”
Jessa didn’t answer as she stared at the fancy painting across the room. “So he doesn’t end up blaming Penny if it didn’t work.” She snapped her eyes to her husband, smiling wryly. “Those brats are too brave to start something from scratch; one starting a company and the other applying for a job without fear of whether he would even get paid in the first year or two.”
“If I didn’t say all the things I told him back then, he wouldn’t have thought this was all on him,” she continued. “It’s his decision, so if it works or not, or if it’s hard, he knew everything was a result of his decision. I don’t want them to fight just because things didn’t go their way.”
“Haha.” Lester chuckled, squeezing her hand mildly. “Well, I guess it’s partly the reason they had to make things work. You’re the best mom.”
Jessa smirked. “I’m just the best, but being the best mom? I’m not sure about that.”
“You are, dear.” Lester nodded at her reassuringly. “Say it. You’re a good mom.”
“…” Jessa arched a brow at her husband, smiling and chuckling. “Fine. I’m a good mom.”
“Good. Now come here,” he suggested, pulling her closer to him. “Our children are now adults. They’re better adults than we are. And I’m fine with that—I’m proud of that.”
“Me too.”
