Chapter 771: Nine lives
“… Why are you back here?”
Those were the only words Penny heard when she opened the back door and stepped inside. She stopped before she could even see the person gazing at her, her intuition tingling frantically.
Uh oh.
Slowly, Penny lifted her eyes, and her face twitched slightly. The pair of eyes staring at her narrowed, glinting in displeasure. After all the efforts she had made to hide from this guy, she still ended up walking right into him, fully exposed.
“Young Master Dean?” Mildred called nervously, noticing that Dean was staring at the door behind them. When she turned back and saw Penny, her heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know exactly why, but as she’d said before, Penny had a beauty that was hard to get fed up with.
The more one stared at Penny, the more beautiful and pleasant she gets. She was also cute, and her carefree attitude added to her charm. In other words, it wouldn’t be surprising if Dean were mesmerized by her! Dean didn’t have a terrible reputation in the family, but Mildred had seen enough go wrong in the family. It was better to be safe than sorry later.
“Young Master Dean, how about we talk elsewhere?” Mildred took a step, trying to block Dean’s line of sight. She rubbed her hands together, smiling nervously. “If you have other things—I mean, if you’re still looking for a rat, I can assure you there’s none here.”
Dean ignored her, keeping his gaze fixed on Penny. ‘What in the world is she thinking? Why the hell is she here?’ His jaw tightened, an irony given the calm demeanor he was showing.
“Hehe.” Penny let out an awkward chuckle, sidling to the side while Mildred tried to distract Dean. ‘Just pretend I don’t know him.’
Penny rolled her eyes, knowing that Dean was smart enough to keep his mouth shut. She was sure he had a ton of questions, but hopefully, he could read the room. With that thought in mind, Penny reached for the remaining trash. After picking one bag, then another, she lowered her head and peeked at him.
Dean was still watching her. So, she looked away and walked like a little thief who didn’t want to disturb anyone.
Thing was, even if Penny didn’t make a sound, she was already found.
“What are you doing right now?” Dean broke the silence, stopping Penny from sneaking away.
Mildred let out a nervous laugh and glanced at Penny before turning her eyes back to Dean. “Young Master Dean, she’s just throwing out some trash since it’s getting a little too crowded here.”
“I’m not talking to you.”
Silence immediately fell over the kitchen, as everyone slowed down and observed. When Dean shut Mildred up, they all gasped. They were so shocked they even held their breath, wide-eyed.
Dean didn’t care much about Mildred as he shifted his attention back to Penny. “What are you doing right now?”
Mildred gulped and looked in Penny’s direction. The younger woman she had been talking to earlier reached for Mildred’s arm, pursing her lips, worried. However, they couldn’t say or do anything, could they?
Dean was speaking to Penny, and for some reason, his tone sounded utterly displeased. It was worse than the one a person might use when they saw a pile of dung.
‘That brat,’ Mildred hissed, glaring at Penny. ‘I knew it! She probably snuck into the party and offended someone with her cheeky attitude.’
Dean slowly walked up to Penny, glancing at the trash bags in her hands. He scoffed and ran his tongue across his inner cheek before lifting his gaze back to her. Penny just looked back at him, no trace of fear in her eyes whatsoever.
Meanwhile, those in Penny’s group earlier watched this nervously. Worry was evident in their eyes, and their hearts raced to the point where they were almost out of breath. As they’d said, they didn’t talk much with Penny, but they shared the same pain from the past hour and a half. So, there was a connection with her.
“I knew it,” the young woman hissed quietly. “I knew she did something when she snuck out earlier. She wouldn’t have been hiding under the table if she didn’t.”
“God… it’s her first time, and the First Branch of the family is already here.”
“I feel bad for her.”
The three of them shook their heads, darting their eyes between Penny and Dean. Mildred and the other woman had already shifted a bit so everyone could see Penny and Dean clearly.
What would happen now?
The tension in the kitchen skyrocketed and seemed to stabilize at its peak right now. Most of them had been working in the kitchen for more than two years. If they could say something, it would be that no one from the family gathering had ever gone into the kitchen before.
This was the first. At least, for most of them, it was the first time someone from the primary family branch had stepped into the kitchen.
Penny pursed her lips into a thin line, casting a sidelong glance at Mildred. Her lips curved down a bit.

‘Although I think she doesn’t like me, I don’t think she’s that bad,’ Penny thought, considering how easily Dean had silenced Mildred, an elder in the Pierson family, without a shred of respect. ‘I guess this is the real taste of the Pierson family. Age doesn’t matter; respect is based on hierarchy.’
“Do I have to repeat myself?” Dean broke his silence again, watching Penny look back at him. “I’m asking you—what do you think you’re doing?”
A deep huff escaped Penny as her face crumpled in dismay. She lifted the trash bags on either side of her and irritably said, “Can’t you see? I’m throwing trash.” Then she shoved the bags toward him, grinning. “Why don’t you help? I really need a hand here.”
Upon hearing Penny’s answer and her actions, everyone’s thoughts went from “…” to “!!!”
Now, it was their time to ask: WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE DOING?
