Chapter 775: Zoren’s POV
“This food… is horrible. It’s poisonous. Get the person who made this out of here.”
A glint flickered across Zoren’s eyes and his lips curved downward in displeasure. For a moment, everyone could only stare at him in silence, interpreting the look on his face as a signal that someone would die a cruel death tonight.
He drew a deep breath before exhaling slowly, issuing the order. “Now.”
The servants flinched, snapping out of their trance before bowing slightly. As instructed, they hurried to the kitchen to fetch the person responsible for the food Zoren had eaten, which had quickly soured his mood.
—
Hours ago…
“Sir, I booked a hotel near the venue for the family gathering,” Benjamin said to Zoren as soon as Zoren walked out of the building, where he had just finished a meeting. “Your last meeting was canceled due to an emergency. So, we’re heading to the hotel right away.”
Zoren shook his head and stopped in front of the open backseat door, facing Benjamin. “There’s no need for that. I’m heading home.”
“Sir?”
“I’ll change at my house.”
“But—” Benjamin stopped himself, pressing his lips together and nodding in understanding. “I understand, sir.”
With that, Zoren climbed into the car while Benjamin stood outside. The latter carefully closed the door and jogged to the front passenger seat. Once Benjamin was in, their vehicle sped off toward Zoren’s home.
As soon as they reached Skyline Plaza, Zoren stepped out without a word and went straight to his room. Zoren could have changed at the hotel, as Benjamin suggested, but he wasn’t looking forward to attending the event. If he was going to kill time, he’d rather do it at home. It might be a bit farther from the event, but it was less toxic. It was better to stay as far away as possible from the toxicity before stepping into the most painfully long hour of his life.
Since it was still early, Zoren took his time to shower and get changed. He even reheated the food his wife had made to eat. Standing by the kitchen counter, Zoren rested his hand on the edge of the bed, his other hand holding a fork as he ate the reheated food from the bowl.
“The number you have dialed is out of service…”
Deep lines appeared between his brows as he stared at the phone lying next to his bowl. He tilted his head, straightening his posture as he picked up the phone.
“Why isn’t she answering?” he wondered aloud, frowning. “Did something happen?”
Worried, Zoren dialed Penny’s number again to check in on her. Though he knew his wife was busy, she usually answered his calls. He waited for the phone to ring, but just as he thought, she wouldn’t answer, the line connected.
“Pen—”
“Busy!”
Clack.
The lines on Zoren’s forehead deepened the moment he heard the beep after Penny’s terse remark. He furrowed his brows, tilting his head as he studied the hurried tone in Penny’s voice when she said that one word: ‘busy.’
A shallow yet sharp breath escaped him, and he placed his phone down, shrugging. Although it was rare—this was the first time—Penny had hung up on him, he understood that it could happen at any time. After all, his wife was an important person. He was already grateful Penny hadn’t done this to him earlier in their relationship.
“I hope she calls me back before the family meeting,” he whispered to himself, then arched his brows as he heard a light growl, likely from a panther.
Turning his head, Zoren furrowed his brows a little when his eyes landed on Renny. The large black cat was just sitting there, staring at him from his vantage point, purring. Zoren’s lips curved upward slightly.
“I can’t take you with me, Renny,” he said, picking up the bowl to finish the food. “Maybe next time.”
Renny just sat there and watched Zoren finish the bowl. But when Zoren placed it in the sink, he heard another cat purring at him. Turning to look, Chunchun was already seated beside Renny, both cats staring at him.
“I can’t take you with me either, Chunchun,” he sighed, picking up a sponge to wash the bowl and fork. Zoren thought his children would understand that he couldn’t bring them along. However, when he finished, Chunchun and Renny were still staring at him and purring.
Facing the two cats, Zoren noticed they had closed the distance. Although they were still sitting on the floor, their proximity to him had decreased significantly.
“I can’t take you both to the party,” he repeated, turning to leave.

Meow.
His steps halted as he huffed faintly, glancing back at his pets. Zoren pressed his lips into a thin line, darting his eyes between the small white cat and the large black one. He understood their boredom—they’d been cooped up at home for some time now.
“Fine,” he conceded, walking back to them. He squatted in front of them, raising a finger to warn them. “I’ll take you both. But you have to promise me you won’t cause trouble, alright? Otherwise, Penny will be angry if this family gathering doesn’t go as smoothly as the board meeting.”
“We need another reward,” he added.
Meow.
Purr.
Hearing their purrs, the corner of his mouth hooked into a smile. Zoren then picked up Chunchun and carried her in his arms, casting Renny a look.
“Let’s go. Follow me,” he said as he turned. “You better behave, though. Your mother will not be happy if she hears I took the two of you to the family gathering. She wasn’t happy when I invited her brother. So, if she hears that I took you both in there and not her, she wouldn’t be too happy with it.”
With that, Zoren and his pets left Skyline Plaza to attend the Pierson Family gathering, where all of Zoren’s avid haters would be. Not to mention, his “half-brother” would be there as well.
Thinking about it, Zoren nodded in satisfaction. If he was bringing Jonathan and planning to introduce him, he might as well bring a few more allies—like Chunchun and Renny.
