Chapter 787: Poor Penny.
“I’ll divorce my husband. Problem solved! Hehe.”
Penny said that so casually, followed by a giggle that left everyone speechless. For a while, they could only stare at Penny, their faces a mix of disbelief and shock.
Well, not that Penny actually meant it. Divorcing Zoren was never part of her plan—over her dead body. It was rare for her to find such a perfect specimen who could fulfill everything she needed in life, both emotionally and intimately. However, she quickly resorted to this excuse for one good reason: they wouldn’t believe her.
Penny had learned this from Mildred when she revealed that she was Zoren’s wife. All she got in return was a load of scolding. Mildred didn’t believe her and instead called her a liar. So, Penny wasn’t hopeful, nor did she want to risk riling everyone up by saying that her husband had her back.
“You’re going to divorce your husband?” the woman beside her, Ashley, blurted out under her breath, only to see Penny nod without hesitation. “That is your grand escape?”
“Mhm! You guys can’t do it because many of you are not only married but also parents. So, I understand that your patience comes from the fact that you’re mothering and fathering your children,” Penny explained in a knowing tone. “As for me, I don’t have children, and I just got married… not too long ago. So, even if I get myself into trouble tonight, it’s going to be fine. My husband might be sad about it, but I can’t bear him carrying the burdens I caused tonight.”
Her face brightened as she added, “And we can always see each other secretly and continue our love story, like Romeo and Juliet.”
“Romeo and Juliet… died,” someone blurted out, making Penny’s face twitch. “Are you sure you’re just going to get a divorce?”
Again, Penny nodded. “Should I just burden my husband and his family because of me? I don’t think so.”
Even so, this was too ridiculous!
Everyone opened and closed their mouths, unable to find the right words to say to Penny. How could they? This was just too absurd. Even if Penny and her husband were recently married, wasn’t there any real relationship between them?
Obviously, they knew it was a marriage of love, but from what they’d heard so far, it didn’t sound like it was a marriage of love at all! Still, even if it was a marriage of convenience, Penny shouldn’t be so indifferent to the idea of divorce.
“So, what do you guys think?” Penny rested her arms on the table, scanning everyone’s faces. “Should we go with this plan?”
No one answered her for a full minute. All they could do was stare at her, wondering what answer they should give this young lady. On one hand, they were concerned about Mildred, and on the other, they couldn’t just ruin someone’s marriage.
Mildred wouldn’t allow that.
“Don’t worry,” Penny chuckled, catching the reluctance on their faces. “I simply said I’d divorce, but my husband won’t allow it. He loves me so much, he’d do everything I say—except divorce. So, if I get myself in trouble, he’ll be there for me.”
“Are you sure about this?” the young woman in Penny’s group asked. “I mean, even if what you say is true and you and your husband have always lived a carefree life, would you be okay?”
Their eyes were filled with concern and intrigue, only to see Penny nod.
“My husband is a good and great man!” Penny declared. “He’s the best of the best, and he isn’t scared of anything, even if he’s up against the main branch!”
“Shhhh!!!” They all shushed in unison, looking toward the entrance instinctively at the sound of Penny’s declaration.
“Are you out of your mind?” asked the depressed guy. “Why would you say that aloud?”
Penny frowned. “But it’s true, though.”
“Even if it’s true—I mean, even if you believe it’s true—you can’t just say it like that!” he added in a hushed voice, now in disbelief at Penny’s naivety.
At this point, they were all convinced that Penny’s husband probably gushed about how great he was to her. That wouldn’t be surprising, since everyone in the kitchen wanted a role in the family—anything but the kitchen work. So, in front of their partners—especially those who originally came from the Pierson Family—there was a tendency to exaggerate their position in the family.
That must be it.
Penny’s husband probably tried to impress her so much that he was just spewing nonsense. Of course, Penny believed it, and now she thought her husband was so powerful that he could take on even the main branch of the Pierson Family.
Poor Penny.
If that wasn’t the case, then they could just imagine her and her husband in chibi form, skipping on a beautiful meadow while blissfully humming a song under the beautiful sunny weather. That was how naive she and her husband sounded to them.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Penny pouted, noticing the mix of reluctance and disbelief in their eyes turning to pity. “You don’t have to feel sorry for me. I’ll be okay! My husband’s got my back!”
That was exactly why they pitied her.

“I can’t—we can’t let you do that.” Ashley, the woman next to Penny, shook her head. “I’m sorry, but let’s just finish the work here. Aunt Mildred will be fine. She’s survived this family for this long, so there’s no need for us to do anything. Aunt Mildred will appreciate that more for sure.”
Penny’s frown deepened as she listened to the woman, who seemed to be second in charge of the kitchen, followed by everyone else’s murmuring.
“If you don’t want to, then I’ll just do it alone!” Penny clapped and straightened her back. “It’s nice meeting you all, but I’m actually very hungry now.”
As soon as those words left Penny’s mouth, the other woman grabbed her arm. “Where are you going?”
“To save Aunt Mildred.” Penny smiled, her eyes squinting, but this time, her aura felt off. “If you guys are fine staying here and telling yourselves Aunt Mildred preferred that, then go on. However, I can’t just do that. How am I supposed to sleep at night knowing I could do something for someone who’s shown me genuine concern and shielded me from what seemed to be my doom, despite being a complete stranger?”
Her voice was sweet, but her words were unfiltered and direct. “Sorry, but I can’t stomach that.”
