Chapter 791: What a relief?
Thud!
For a moment, everyone’s eyes fell on the woman who had been pushed down and landed on the floor with a thud. Deep lines appeared between their brows as they stared at Penny, a face too unfamiliar to most of them.
“Penny?” Belle whispered to herself, pushing herself up slightly, worry immediately shining in her eyes, confused by this sudden turn of events.
Dean, on the other hand, narrowed his eyes, his face twisting. ‘What is this woman doing now?’ he wondered, veins in his forehead protruding. ‘Wasn’t she trying to hide? Why is she here, taking all the spotlight?’
Dean slowly lifted his gaze to Mildred and then at the rest of the kitchen crew. He knew Penny well enough to guess the reason. ‘It must be because of Mildred.’ Penny was like this, after all—when someone she cared about was in trouble, she would always step in.
‘This woman…’ he pinched the bridge of his nose, massaging his brows as he considered what to do. ‘Why can’t she just live a normal, peaceful life?’
Meanwhile, Zoren raised an eyebrow and gazed down at the damsel in distress on the floor. He cautiously reached for his IV and cast a look at the nurse.
“Take it off,” he whispered, making the nurse furrow her brows. “Now.”
“But—” The nurse’s breath hitched when Zoren’s eyes suddenly lit up dangerously. “Ye—yes.”
As quietly as she could, the nurse carefully stopped the IV and removed it. She quickly pressed a cotton ball to the site, but Zoren took it from her, waving her away impatiently.
‘No wonder the taste was familiar,’ he thought, glancing at the plate his wife had given him. ‘She must really be upset that I invited her brother instead of her. That’s why she gave me this food.’
His lips curved down, but a part of him accepted this punishment. If Penny was that displeased, he should take responsibility. After all, his grandmother often told him he would make mistakes intentionally or not. If this mistake was punishable by such a “death sentence,” then so be it.
Meow.
Chunchun purred and jumped off the chair, snapping Zoren out of his thoughts. Zoren watched as the white ball of sunshine sauntered to his chair, only for Chunchun to look in Penny’s direction. Chunchun kept its gaze on Penny for a while before returning to Renny’s side.
Renny observed the white cat and let it jump on its back. A low purr escaped him as he stayed still, rather than jumping toward Penny. The two cats could only watch the events unfold, as if they’d had enough of their mother’s antics.
‘Even they are disappointed in me,’ Zoren sighed heavily, shaking his head as he felt his “children’s” disappointment. What he didn’t know was that Chunchun and Renny simply didn’t want to steal their mother’s spotlight.
Moreover, Penny looked very pretty, but she smelled like onions and garlic—a strong scent that didn’t sit well with them.
“Ashley, what’s going on here?” Mildred blurted out in disbelief, helping Penny sit up. “Why are you dragging her out of here? You lot should go back to the kitchen and get back to work!”
Ashley pressed her lips into a thin line and huffed. “Auntie, this woman admitted to mixing some unknown spice into the food.” She then cast a look around the table before her gaze settled on William. “She’s the one at fault, not Aunt Mildred.”
William’s face darkened as the others frowned, though Belle, Dean, and Zoren remained unaffected.
“The one at fault—what are you talking about?!” Mildred yelled, holding Penny’s arm as she helped her stand up. “Ashley, what do you think you’re doing? Stop spouting nonsense and go back to the kitchen. I’m too old to be saved.”
“We’re not trying to save you,” Ashley argued sternly, her fists clenched behind her back as she tried to maintain a strong front. “We’re just here to deliver the person everyone is looking for.”
“What…” Mildred slowly shifted her eyes to Penny, only to see Penny smiling at her awkwardly.
“Sorry, Auntie,” Penny giggled nervously. “But I think I did something… to one of the plates.”
“…” Mildred opened and closed her mouth. ‘I knew it! When she was doing the plating, she was up to something mischievous. I thought she was just sneaking some portions for herself!’
Even so, Mildred had already taken Penny under her wing. So, even if Penny admitted to it, she wouldn’t let a young lady ruin her life. Penny was still young and could still learn if someone was patient enough.
“That’s not true!” Mildred looked away from Penny, stepping forward to keep her behind her. “Master, William, everyone, I’m sorry for lying. This young lady knows nothing and is in no way responsible for this.”
“Mildred, this young lady just admitted she did something to the food!” William exclaimed. “Why else would you shield her?”
Mildred slowly mustered her courage to look up. “It’s my fault. I told you no one touched the dish, but I actually asked her to do some plating while I was distracted by something. I lied, and because she was following my orders, I should be the one to take responsibility.”
“Hah! Interesting!” William scoffed, pacing slightly to face Mildred. He glanced at the kitchen staff before his eyes settled back on her. “You want to take responsibility for her?”

“Yes.” Mildred nodded firmly. “She had nothing to do with this.”
“She put poison in the head of the family’s food!” William roared. “Are you saying you’d go to jail in her stead?!”
“Ye—”
“No way!” This time, Penny scoffed and stepped to the side, sizing up William from head to toe with an exaggeratedly arched brow. “For your information, what I put in there isn’t poison, and it wasn’t meant for the head of the family!”
She huffed, prompting panicked and horrified looks from Mildred and those who had come with her. “That serving was meant for you!” she pointed at William, her chin raised high, her lips curled in a smirk.
Zoren thought, ‘Oh, so it wasn’t for me.’ And then he smiled. ‘What a relief.’
The rest were left speechless, staring at Penny, who seemed to have, in their eyes, a death wish.
