Chapter 809: Heart
After hearing what Belle was planning, Penny could say that Zoren was right. He might not have said much about Belle, but according to him, Belle wasn’t a difficult person. However, she wasn’t easy either. Belle knew how to bite back, and perhaps, if it weren’t for the family she was building with her husband, she would’ve done so long ago.
“It’s okay, Penny, you don’t have to walk me out.” Belle stopped in front of the door, facing Penny. “You’ve already done so much for me, even though we’ve known each other for less than twenty-four hours.”
If Belle could ask, she would’ve asked Penny how she could be so kind to her when they were still strangers.
Penny smiled. “We haven’t known each other for twenty-four hours? That’s wild, because I feel like I’ve known you for a lifetime.”
“Penny…” Belle smiled appreciatively, reaching out to hold Penny’s hand. “Thank you. For some reason, I also felt very comfortable with you. It’s like I’ve known you for a long time.”
“I called for Yugi, and he’ll escort you home,” said Penny, holding the hand that was on hers. “Since the transfer hasn’t been made and I’m asking you to hold it for a little while, you’ll need security.”
“It’s fine…” Belle trailed off when Penny shook her head slightly.
Penny nodded at her. “Although you’re practically giving your shares to me, it’s the least I can do. Moreover, I’ll be sending someone to look into your husband’s case.”
“Penny, about that, it’s alright. I already have a lawyer, and my husband has proof to back his innocence.”
“I’m not talking about that, Sister Belle.” The side of Penny’s mouth stretched. “Since you are family — whatever the Pierson Family says, that you’re not anymore — you still are. And I never let anyone bully the people I call family.”
A reassuring smile settled on Penny’s face. “We can’t always be on the defensive, right?”
“Penny…”
“Just take it as my payment for the shares,” Penny added. “To be honest, I don’t like owing someone. So, let me do this at least.”
“Alright.” Belle sighed in surrender, nodding at Penny in understanding. “Thank you, Penny. Really, thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Penny smiled gracefully, tapping Belle’s hand lightly before giving it back to her. However, just as Belle pulled her hand back, Penny noticed the heart-shaped birthmark on the side of Belle’s hand.
Huh?
Out of instinct, Penny grabbed Belle’s hand again to look at the birthmark.
“Hmm?” Belle furrowed her brows in surprise. “Penny?”
Belle’s eyes slowly fell on what Penny was looking at before she smiled. “It’s quite unique, isn’t it?”
“…” Penny kept her eyes on the heart-shaped birthmark before lifting her gaze to meet Belle’s beautiful eyes. “Has it always been there?”
“Yes, that’s why it’s a birthmark,” Belle chuckled. “People always mistake it for a tattoo, but it’s a birthmark. My mom always told me it was pretty, and that I was born with good fortune. But now, I’m grateful I have it because it helps my mom remember her daughter.”
Penny carefully released Belle’s hand while the latter retrieved her hand. Belle flashed Penny a smile, thanking her once more and expressing her appreciation. However, unlike earlier, Penny could only stare at Belle, forcing herself to stay focused.
“You’re welcome,” Penny blurted out as she reached for the door. As soon as she opened it, Yugi was already standing outside with a smile. “Yugi, look after her.”
Yugi smiled and cast Belle a look. “She doesn’t mean that I should look after you myself, as I have other things to do, but rather, I’ll monitor the people who will handle your security.”
“Haha. Thank you.”
“Then, shall we?”
Having said that, Belle cast Penny one last look and thanked her again before she followed Yugi. Penny, on the other hand, closed the door and gazed down.
“What are the odds?” she muttered under her breath, gazing at the shut door in disbelief. “That’s… her?”
Her lips opened and closed before another remark slipped past Penny’s mouth. “Holy shit.”

[FLASHBACK: CAPITAL STATE PRISON]
“Ugh…” Penny grunted even before she opened her eyes, struck with pain all over her body. When she tried to open her eyes, they felt heavy and painful. “Ouch.”
Touching the corner of her eyes, she immediately knew it wasn’t as swollen as she thought it would be. However, she quickly touched the cut on her eyebrow that almost reached her eyelid.
“At this point, I might go blind — those bitches, now they’ve done it.” Her voice was coarse. Despite her slightly swollen face with new and old bruises, the tone of her voice didn’t show the slightest hint of weakness. If anything, she was just purely irritated.
“Right, Grace,” she blurted out, panic quickly rising in her heart, reminded of what happened to Grace before Penny was rushed into the prison’s infirmary. But just as Penny turned her head, she almost jumped out of bed when she saw a person beside her.
“Ah, goodness, that scared me.”
Her swollen face scrunched up slightly, making her hurt just from that slight movement. However, that didn’t matter to Penny as she gazed at the person seated beside her bed.
The other person, another inmate, had a large burned scar covering most of her face, her hair was bald because half of her head had been burned, and her arm was similarly scarred, making her unrecognizable.
Penny knew her, or rather, she had seen her before. However, Penny had been too busy getting into trouble to care about anyone else.
“Huh?” Penny’s brows rose, seeing the inmate with the burned scars point in a direction. When Penny followed where the other inmate was pointing, her eyes landed on a bowl of ice with a towel on it. Casting her eyes back to the inmate, the latter touched her forehead.
“I had a fever?” Penny asked, and the other inmate nodded. “And you’re trying to lower my temperature?”
Again, the other inmate nodded.
“Hah…” Penny scoffed, propping herself up on her elbows. “Can you talk?”
The inmate didn’t speak, so that answered Penny’s question.
“If I were you, I’d just mind your own…” Penny touched her forehead and realized she wasn’t burning up. “Hah. You’re good. Though I’d prefer it if you minded your own business, thanks.”
The inmate didn’t answer and just stared at her. Her other eye was already gone, which wasn’t surprising given the severity of her skin. Penny, on the other hand, just shook her head.
Penny didn’t care much about the mute inmate with such severe burn scars. However, because of this, she somehow felt indebted to her. So, Penny would step in when other inmates tried to pick on this poor mute woman.
It took some time before Penny gave her a name, instead of calling her by her prison number. She, along with all of Penny’s friends inside the prison, called this scarred woman Heart. They did so because of the heart-shaped birthmark on her hand, which hadn’t been erased by her burn.
