Chapter 818: About to learn a dreadful discovery
Meanwhile…
“Stephen!” Charles called, jogging to catch up with him. “Stephen, wait!”
Stephen stopped in his tracks and huffed, looking back at Charles. “What is it, Charles? Weren’t you satisfied with how I was humiliated that you came here to add more insult to that?”
“Haha, Stephen, come on.” Charles stopped a few steps from him in the driveway. “We’ve known each other since we were young, and we’re already at this age. Are we still going to banter like we did before?”
“If you don’t want to banter like before, then don’t show your face in front of me.”
“Stephen…”
“Charles, all your life, you’ve done whatever you wanted without any restrictions.” Stephen walked toward Charles, pressing a finger to his chest. “Be it joining the varsity team or enlisting in the military. You never listened to anyone, and yet, you can always come back and take what you took for granted in the beginning.”
“I, and even Haines, on the other hand, can’t do that. Why? Because unlike you, we’re just relatives. All we have is the Bennet family name and our skills. Compared to Haines, you’re nothing. Yet, he has to listen to you. I have to listen to you after working my butt off day in and day out while you’re out there doing whatever you want,” he continued through gritted teeth. “But like always, you’d come back and just take everything.”
“Even until now, you’ve never changed, Charles,” he added, growing angrier as he criticized Charles. “While everyone else is still working, you chose to retire when you could’ve done more. If you didn’t step down, my son wouldn’t be filled with so much jealousy, and he wouldn’t have to question his self-worth because everyone is comparing him to your son. By retiring and letting your son into the company, you just started this competition that we all have to endure in the past.”
“If only you stayed…” Stephen’s breath hitched as he stopped himself from continuing. He gulped down the tension in his throat, glaring at Charles. “Charles Bennet, this is all on you. You’re selfish through and through. So, if you followed me here to tell me whatever absurd things out of pity, then keep it.”
Stephen paused again, his breathing heavy, and took a step back. “I don’t need your pity. I don’t need anything from you. Save your breath and don’t you ever say a word about my family. Not from someone whose son isn’t behind bars. You have no idea how your selfishness affects others.”
After saying that, Stephen huffed one last time and turned his back on Charles. He didn’t even look back as he stomped toward his car. Meanwhile, Charles remained in the same spot.
“I couldn’t even say a word…” he whispered, watching Stephen get in the backseat of his car as the driver jogged to the driver’s seat. “He also has never changed.”
Charles pressed his lips into a thin line, watching the car speed away. “It’s not like I can refute some of what he said. I am selfish.”
Even as a child, Charles had always been willful, and in his teenage years, he was quite rebellious. He would do everything else except what his father told him to do. Mainly because Charles didn’t like the ridiculous rules Chairman Bennet was imposing. Moreover, why would he want to run the company when he could see his cousins working so hard and getting involved in it early on?
Just like what Stephen said, Haines was exceptional. Even Stephen was good at what he was doing. It was just that everyone had to admit that no matter how exceptional Haines and Stephen were at running the company and managing it, Charles just had this unique charm when it came to building connections and leadership.
“Well, I tried,” Charles shrugged, not dwelling on Stephen’s sentiments. Why would he? Stephen had said more hurtful things in the past. This was nothing. “I’ll tell Ali that I tried to console my father and Stephen… and they’re comforted.”
“Dad, since when did you console Grandpa and Uncle?” Suddenly, Slater’s voice rang from behind him, causing him to flinch. Looking back, he saw Slater approaching with suspicious, narrowed eyes. “If I’m not mistaken, Uncle Stephen left fuming. Even Grandpa is mad at you! They aren’t consoled!”
“Slater, I swear if you tell that to your mother, I’ll destroy your room. Find a new place to sleep.”
Slater frowned deeply. “Why would I tell Mom that?” he murmured, glancing to the side as if he initially planned to tell Allison about this. After all, Slater had come with his father because of his mother.
The main reason Charles and Slater were there to begin with was because of Allison. After everything that had happened, Allison was worried about the chairman. Sven Bennet was still family, and everyone knew the chairman doted on him.
Meeting Stephen there was a coincidence.
“Good! I’ll just bid your grandfather goodbye,” said Charles. “Get the car ready.”
“Dad, Grandpa said you don’t have to see him again. He hates people.”
Charles smirked at his son and looked back. “Since when did he see me as a person? I’m an animal in his eyes. Just get the car ready.”
“Okay…” Slater shrugged indifferently, watching his father go back into the residence, clearly to make Chairman Bennet angry. He didn’t dwell on it and shrugged, snapping his eyes to the driveway.
Stephen’s car had just passed the gates of the residence. Slater hummed a tune, tilting his head to the side. Slowly, he took out the bottle of pills he had hidden in his jacket.
“I wonder what kind of medication this is?” he wondered to himself, glancing up at the gates.
Slater kept his lips pressed into a thin line, glancing at the bottle again. Instead of doing anything about it, he just kept it in his jacket pocket, planning to figure it out later. It wasn’t like Slater was suspicious of the contents of the pill bottle; he was just curious to know if Stephen was hiding a condition.
Little did Slater know, he was about to make a dreadful discovery as to what the pills were. An answer he wouldn’t have expected. At least, not this soon.
