Chapter 819: Item from the black market
“Hey, aren’t you going to step out and say hi to your mother?” Charles glanced at the driver’s seat where his third son sat, tipping his head toward the entrance. “Come on.”
Slater smiled, his eyes squinting slightly. “I need to go somewhere.”
“Somewhere?”
“Work.”
“You don’t have work.”
“Dad, I was on leave because of a traumatic incident. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have other obligations.”
“Like?”
“Like… keeping myself fresh? I have a facial session!”
Charles’s face twitched as he studied Slater’s face. Although he didn’t want to admit it, Slater did have good skin. However, even Penny didn’t do things like this. Allison, Jessa, and even Nina had to drag Penny just to come with them. But here was Slater, having an appointment, and never missing a single session at the derma clinic.
“Son, now that I think of it, your job is quite challenging.” Charles reached out, squeezing Slater’s shoulder while nodding at him. “It must be hard for you to go to the clinic regularly for something like that.”
“…” Slater blinked a few times. “It’s not that hard.”
“Well, anyway, good work, son,” Charles said, ignoring Slater’s answer as he tapped his son’s shoulder before stepping out of the car. But before closing the door, he paused, looking at Slater. “Slater, you better take care. This absolute trash of a car is very dangerous.”
After saying his piece, Charles slammed the door shut and walked off. Meanwhile, Slater’s face twitched as he watched his father approach the restaurant through the window.
“This isn’t absolute trash!” he yelled to himself, looking at the steering wheel and the entire interior. “It’s gorgeous! Don’t they have eyes?”
No matter what, Slater loved his cars, and in his eyes, they were gorgeous and a real beauty. He couldn’t understand why the rest of the family saw it as “absolute trash.”
“They don’t have that high of a standard,” he told himself, shaking his head. “I get it. My family might excel in one thing, but they don’t have the same taste as me.”
With that thought in mind, Slater smiled again, feeling better about himself. He shrugged, started the car, and drove away from the restaurant.
One thing Slater loved about sports cars was not just their beauty but their speed. In no time, he reached a clinic just outside the city. However, because it was quite flashy, he had to park it at a motel ten minutes away and take a taxi from there.
The clinic was small and quite old. Most of the patients were elderly. Slater didn’t pay much attention to them, keeping his big glasses on and his cap low to hide his face. He went directly to the pharmacy, leaned on the counter, and placed the bottle of pills with his finger on top of it.
The pharmacist flinched slightly, looking up at the man whose face was almost covered.
“I need to know what this is,” Slater asked, his tone flat.
The pharmacist blinked and, without question, reached for the bottle. She opened the lid, poured one pill into her palm, and furrowed her brows. The pill was round, small, and white.
“This looks like… a muscle relaxant,” she said, picking up the pill to examine it more closely.
“A muscle relaxant?” Slater repeated, his brow furrowing. “Why would he need a muscle relaxant?”
Just then, the pharmacist whispered, catching Slater’s attention. “This is weird.”
“What is weird?”
“This looks like a muscle relaxant, but there’s a small serial number at the bottom.” She flipped the tablet to show Slater, but the serial numbers were so small it was hard to read from a distance. One would have to examine it up close to see them clearly. “It’s hard to see, but if you look closely, there’s a number engraved on it. Real muscle relaxants aren’t supposed to have these.”
Slater arched a brow. “What does that mean?”
“I’ll check something first,” she said, taking the pill sample before walking away from the counter. While Slater waited, he glanced at the people in the clinic. No one was approaching the pharmacy yet, so he kept leaning against the side, waiting for the pharmacist to return.
He waited for over five minutes before the pharmacist came back. As she approached, Slater could already see the look on her face. He immediately knew something bad was about to unfold.

When the pharmacist reached the counter, she stretched her neck to check if anyone was listening. Once she was sure no one was close enough, she snapped her eyes back to Slater.
“Slater, where did you get this?” she asked quietly, her eyes filled with both intrigue and panic.
Seeing that look confirmed his guess. “What are they?”
“Hah…” she huffed quietly, opening her palm to reveal the pill. “This is not an ordinary drug, Slater. At first glance, it’s easily mistaken for eperisone, but it’s not that. This one is also of the same type, just at a higher dose… and it’s lethal.”
“What?”
“This drug was banned because of its risks. The company that conducted the clinical trials was even sued many years ago because of it,” she added in a hushed voice, as if they were gossiping. “However, some people in the underground market started making similar versions and selling them at a high price.”
Slater narrowed his eyes, pushing his glasses down the bridge of his nose. “What did you say? It’s being sold on the black market for a high price? Why?”
“Yes,” she whispered. “Because this drug can kill someone slowly. First, it puts the person into a coma, and then they die, but only after their body flushes it out of their system. In a way, it kills them but keeps them alive. In other words, it doesn’t leave evidence. I was assigned to join a special collaboration to investigate this. Where did you get one?”
Slater took a deep breath, not answering, his eyes focused on the pill in the woman’s palm.
‘Stephen Bennet, why the hell are you carrying around…’ he trailed off, remembering that Stephen Bennet was at the Old Residence of the Bennet Family, where the chairman lived. ‘Fuck.’
