Chapter 833: Need a ride
Stephen could barely sit still in his office, constantly massaging his temples and taking deep breaths. Although he had been in the office all day, there was nothing he could remember doing. He would just pace back and forth, then return to his seat, and the cycle would repeat.
Ring!
Stephen almost jumped in surprise when his phone rang. Checking it, he huffed upon seeing his alarm.
“It’s already time to go home,” he murmured, pinching the bridge of his nose in distress. “Yet, still no word from Atlas or Slater.”
He ran his finger through his hair in frustration, rubbing his hand across his face. He drew another deep breath, a little surprised at how quickly time had passed without him noticing. What was even more surprising was that he hadn’t done anything productive for him to forget about time.
“I should just go home,” he mumbled. “I’m still on leave. It’s better that way.”
Nodding to himself, telling himself to take a break from the anxiety, Stephen gathered his things and left his office. He didn’t stop to speak with anyone, leaving work as usual. While walking, he kept reminding himself that he had already tried to confess everything to Atlas, but the latter had told him to save it for later.
When Stephen reached the lobby, he walked out without stopping to talk to anyone. His car was already parked right outside the building, visible through the glass entrance. However, his driver wasn’t standing outside, waiting for him.
“…” His steps slowed, swallowing the tension in his throat. ‘Don’t tell me… the person inside the car…’
Stephen looked to his left and right, hoping someone would stop him or buy him some time. Normally, his driver would always be waiting to open the backseat door for him. His driver had always done that without fail.
‘Please… not again,’ he lamented internally, slowing his pace even more in hopes that it would take forever to reach the exit. However, no matter how slowly he walked, Stephen eventually reached the building’s entrance.
His heart sank as he stepped outside, only to find a young driver standing outside the driver’s seat. The driver walked around the car, opening the door for Stephen as usual.
‘I don’t know him,’ Stephen told himself. ‘How do they do this?’
The first time they sent his personal driver away was when they used an officer to relay a message to Stephen—one he hadn’t even known about. He could just imagine the strategy behind sending his driver away and replacing him with one of their own.
“Good evening, Director Bennet,” the driver said, bowing slightly as Stephen approached the open door.
Stephen glanced at the young driver, already aware that he might end up somewhere other than home. If not, then a phone call was waiting for him inside.
“Where’s my driver?” he asked, buying some time. “Where did you send him this time?”
“He has an emergency, that’s why you called for me.” The driver looked up at him, no trace of fear in his eyes. “Isn’t that right, sir?”
“…” No, it wasn’t right.
Stephen huffed heavily, raising his foot to get into the car. But just before he could step in, he heard an annoyingly familiar voice from behind him.
“Stephen!”
Even before Stephen could check, he already knew who it was. There was only one person in this world who could annoy him just by speaking: Charles Bennet.
Looking back, deep lines formed between Stephen’s brows as he saw Charles and Haines approaching. “What do you want now, Charles? What I said last time… doesn’t that make it clear to you? Stay away from me.”
“Stephen, why do you hate me so much?” Charles gasped in disbelief, his face contorting into a frown. “See what I told you, Haines? This old man will die before you and me. He’s always angry.”
“What did you—” Stephen touched his nape, feeling his anger rise in his head, causing stiffness in his neck.
Haines, on the other hand, sighed deeply. “Stephen, Charles and I were having dinner at Alison’s restaurant. How about you join us? Alison said you haven’t visited her place since it opened.”
“Hah. Thanks for the invite, but I don’t want to,” Stephen snorted, preferring to face those threatening his life rather than spending time with Charles. That would be more torturous for him. “All I can say is I hope you two enjoy yourselves. I’m going home.”
Having said that, Stephen turned his back on them and tried to get in the car. But just as he placed his foot inside, Charles grabbed the top of the door.
“What are you doing?” Stephen asked, his eyes blazing with frustration. “Let go. I already told you I’m not coming.”
“Sure, if you don’t want to, but Haines and I need a ride.”

As soon as Charles spoke, Haines approached the front passenger side. “I’m sitting here,” he said, getting in without any hesitation.
“Hehe. Thanks in advance, Steph,” Charles said, patting Stephen’s shoulder before jogging around to the other side and getting into the backseat. Once settled, he ducked and patted the space beside him. “Stephen, aren’t you getting in?”
Stephen’s face twitched. He glared at his shameless cousin, who acted as if he were the one giving Stephen a ride. This was Stephen’s car!
“Hah…” Stephen huffed in surrender, glancing at the young driver before getting in with a heavy heart.
Although he had said he would rather face the bad guys than spend time with Charles, this situation somehow lifted the crippling anxiety that had been gnawing at him all day. It was just a temporary relief, but it was better than nothing—building his confidence, or maybe his anger, before the driver dropped him off wherever he planned to go.
“You sure you’re not coming with us?” Charles clicked his tongue and smirked at Stephen, leaning toward him. “Haines and I were going to plan our next fishing trip—”
“Shut up,” Stephen deadpanned, keeping his eyes on the driver. “Let’s just go and drop these old men off wherever they need to be. Do it as fast as you can.”
Little did Stephen know that even if the driver listened to him, he wouldn’t be leaving so easily.
