Chapter 844: Taunting gift
[Prime Group]
After completing all of her tasks, Penny decided to check the gifts she had received from the Pierson family. She hadn’t planned on opening them yesterday and didn’t see any reason to spend time on gifts that didn’t come from sincerity.
Standing in the living area of the small penthouse atop Prime Group, Penny sighed. Her eyes glossed over the stacked presents, which varied in size, shape, and design. There was even a flower area on the other side. The notes Yugi had placed on her desk yesterday were from the gifts, and he had decided to separate them based on her personality.
“In my past life, the only gifts I got were from Uncle Haines and Butler Jen on my birthdays,” she whispered, staring at the mountain of presents before her. “I’ve really… come far, haven’t I?”
With everything happening in her life, Penny sometimes forgot how different her current life was from her first. But whenever she remembered, the reminders were often small things like this.
“Let’s see,” she murmured, reaching out for the nearest gift within her reach.
The present was a small box with a cute ribbon on top. She hadn’t noticed the small card attached, but she could already guess who had sent her this gift based on its adorable wrapping.
“Harper,” she muttered, checking the small card beside the ribbon. “She said she’s giving me a family heirloom.”
Penny casually unwrapped the present to find a jade bracelet with traditional carvings and designs that modern pieces didn’t have. It looked simple, but it carried an elegant aura.
“She might look naive, but I guess she does have an eye for beautiful things. I like it, surprisingly,” she whispered, smiling subtly before closing the gift.
Setting it aside, Penny checked a few more presents until she finally noticed a large yet petite one at the side. From what she could tell, it was a framed painting wrapped in elegant red and gold paper. Peeling the top of the wrapper, her eyelashes fluttered.
“Oh?” Penny stepped back for a better look at the full painting. “It’s not bad.”
She smacked her lips slightly, reminded of Amir’s remarks. “He said he and his wife went to an auction to get it, but I’m assuming it’s only him who had to do all the legwork.” Not that she was judging Amir’s wife, but for Penny, if Amir’s wife had that much respect for him, she wouldn’t let him stay in the kitchen.
A year might have been mandatory, but Amir had already spent years in the kitchen.
“I guess he liked this painting without thinking whether I’d like it,” Penny said, letting out a shallow laugh and shaking her head. She didn’t dare move the large frame herself, as it was heavy.
Since Penny didn’t know what Noah had gotten her, she randomly picked out a few other gifts. Upon seeing the names on the presents, she would either check their contents or ignore them completely, depending on who had sent them.
She also saw Mildred’s gift—an elegant gold-plated hairpin. It was simple, but classy.
“Aunt Mildred’s gift is… interesting,” Penny commented, setting it aside with Harper’s gift. Penny continued checking the presents until she found a card with Noah’s name on it. “I wonder what he got for me?”
Penny casually opened the wrapping and furrowed her brows when she saw a key inside. “What is this?” she wondered aloud, picking up the key along with the note inside. After reading the short note, her brow arched.
“He’s giving me a small percentage of his share in JJ Mall.” Surprise slowly spread across Penny’s face as she thought of Noah and his relaxed demeanor earlier. “I guess I misjudged him.”
While Harper and Amir’s gifts were meant to please Penny, Noah’s gift was intended to gain her favor. Giving her a piece of JJ Mall was his way of showing loyalty.
“As far as I recall, JJ Mall… is a neutral party in the Pierson family,” she whispered, intrigued. “I wonder if Noah gave me his own share or his wife’s… without her knowledge. Interesting.”
Penny rocked her head slightly, placing Noah’s gift alongside the others she had set aside. She continued checking the presents, thinking she still had plenty of time to go through what her husband’s family had gotten her.
“Karina Pierson, Kimberly, and then Jenny?” Penny placed the three gifts from them together, smiling. “Nope.”
She swept the gifts aside and grabbed more, hoping to find something that piqued her interest. After tossing aside five gifts without checking their contents, Penny finally found something that intrigued her.
“I read her letter, but I didn’t expect her gift.” Penny smiled, seeing Ashley’s name on top of a present. “She didn’t have to bother, considering she’s already taking care of her husband and living a frugal life.”
Still, Penny was curious about what Ashley had given her. When she opened the present, the corner of her mouth curled up.
“I guess a day isn’t enough for her to make me anything big,” Penny said, picking up a knitted coaster inside a fancy box. There was a note inside, expressing Ashley’s short message to Penny for giving her such a humble gift.
“I thought she was fierce, but she keeps apologizing,” Penny commented, placing the gift aside.
Having already seen the gifts from the people who interested her, Penny was ready to leave with the other small presents she had opened. But just as she got up, she noticed a small box placed on the second row of the first stack she had been checking.

The present was small—like a ring box—and wrapped in a black cover. Deep lines appeared between her brows as she picked it up, realizing she hadn’t noticed it before. With how small it was, one could easily miss it among all the other presents.
“There’s no card on it,” she muttered as she examined the small box. “Did someone actually gift me a ring? What a weird thing to give someone.”
A part of her wanted to toss it aside, but the other part was curious. Was it actually a ring? Penny opened the wrapper and instantly saw a box that could either hold a ring or earrings. But when she opened it, her expression darkened, and her eyes sharpened, glinting malevolently.
Inside was a mini belt—a strap that could barely fit her pinky. However, what made her expression darken was the fact that it looked exactly like the strap from that electric chair.
“I hope Jonathan Pierson is prepared when he sent this to taunt me.”
