Chapter 845: If I don’t, I’ll make sure he knows I can.
Who are you?
What do you want?
Why… me?
These were the few questions Penny had for Jonathan when she confirmed his existence. The moment she realized Jonathan Pierson wasn’t just an alias, more questions began popping into her head every time she thought of him.
Why was he there on her execution day? Why did he want to see her end?
At first, Penny thought the attack on their family was all there was. But as things slowly unraveled, piece by piece, more questions filled her mind. Unfortunately, only a few were answered, leaving her with lingering doubts.
“Jonathan Pierson,” she whispered, seated on the couch, surrounded by gifts from the Pierson family. In her hand was an open box with a small belt inside.
Just gazing at it made her remember the last day of her previous life. Back then, Penny had already given up, simply going with the flow. She felt as if all the vigor and determination she’d had during her incarceration vanished into thin air.
But she could still remember how her body fell into that chair. The grip of the officer as they pinned her arms to the armrests, strapping them with those little belts. The deep breaths against her sides, her heart pounding, and how her spirit slowly died before her body.
“Did he… succeed?” Another whisper slipped from her lips, unsure of what happened after her death. “What happened after that?”
Finn had told her that he was able to live even after Penny’s death. Until that point, Penny had believed the world stopped when she died. But since learning that people still lived afterward, she found herself wondering about so many things.
One of those things was whether Jonathan had succeeded… or not.
“If I’m going to trust my gut, I’d say…” She trailed off, her eyes fixed on the little gift that filled her with so much… hatred. “… he failed, didn’t he?”
Because if Jonathan had succeeded in their previous life, he wouldn’t be changing his life the way everyone who remembered their past lives did. Just like Penny and Finn, who were simply trying to survive and save those they felt they needed to — themselves, included — Jonathan didn’t live as William’s son, nor did he live as a Pierson. If anything, he had lived all this time as someone else’s son, only to return now, claiming to be Zoren’s half-brother.
He was changing his life, just like Penny and Finn.
Zoren had told her about this the same night of the family gathering. It wasn’t as if this matter had ever slipped Penny’s mind. It always lingered at the back of her head, even if there was so much happening in her life at the moment.
And moments like this, when she had to sit by herself and reflect on the past and present, still gave her a headache.
“Finn should wake up,” she whispered to herself. “He’s the only one involved with the Piersons who remembers his past life.”
After all, Penny knew the Pierson family, but her knowledge of them was minimal.
All she knew was that Nina’s husband in the past had been Jonathan Pierson.
“I wonder if the attacks on Finn have something to do with his relationship with Nina?” she murmured. “The odds are low, but it could be an additional reason — jealousy?”
She tilted her head to the side, eyes still on the gift. “I don’t think so,” she shook her head mildly. “Jonathan and Nina… if I recall Nina’s personality from the past, she’s more ambitious than one would imagine.”
Nina’s biggest flaw was not being the real daughter of the Bennet family, but rather being the daughter of a gambling addict and a lowlife “prostitute,” as Jessa used to call Nina’s mother. So, aside from making Penny’s life a living hell by stomping on her and dragging Penny’s reputation through the mud, Nina’s goal was to erase her parentage.
In other words, marrying into the most influential family in Anteca, the Pierson family, was one of the steps to do that.
“Even so, I’m still not sure about that. I could be wrong, but I’m leaning toward that conclusion,” Penny murmured to herself, sighing heavily as her eyes snapped back to the gifts before her. “Jonathan Pierson… Jonathan… you are truly a mystery to me.”
Knock Knock.
Suddenly, Penny heard a faint knock at the entrance of the living area. Looking up, a shallow breath slipped from her lips when she saw her husband standing by the entrance. Zoren retracted his knuckles from the stand and sauntered toward her, skillfully avoiding the gifts — the obstacles — to reach her.
“I heard from Mark that you’ve been in here,” he explained casually, sitting beside her on the couch. “He’s worried, so I decided to pick you up today.”
Her lips pressed together as their corners curved into a slight smile. She gazed at him, unspoken thoughts swirling in her eyes. “I was checking everyone’s gifts.”
“You could’ve asked me to help you,” Zoren glanced over the presents, catching sight of some crumpled wrappers on the side. “Seems to me you’ve only opened a few select ones.”

“Not everything is worth checking,” Penny replied, moving the gift in her hand toward him.
Zoren gazed down, furrowing his brows, and narrowing his eyes. “Did someone give you a ring?”
“Take a closer look.”
“It looks like a ring,” he commented as he picked it up, holding it with his thumb and index. “A cheap one.”
Penny chuckled. “It’s a small belt.”
“A belt ring?” He looked up at her, a puzzled expression forming on his face.
“It’s a belt ring…” she trailed off. “… that looks exactly like the strap they used to tie me to that chair.”
She didn’t need to say more for him to understand what she meant.
“It’s a gift from Jonathan, the guy claiming to be your step-brother and, apparently, my brother-in-law in this lifetime,” she added with a deep sigh. “He’s clearly taunting me. Maybe he’s heard who your wife is.”
“I see.” Zoren nodded in understanding, sprawling his arm around her to pull her closer. “I’ll take care of him.”
“It’s okay.” Penny smiled, resting her head on his shoulder. “I’m not upset or anything like that. There’s just a lot on my mind, but this won’t break me.”
He remained quiet, rubbing her shoulder gently. “I’ve let a lot of things slide, but this is not one of them, Penny.”
Penny furrowed her brows and looked up at him. “Renren, what are you… planning to do?”
“I’ll kill him,” he answered without hesitation. “If I don’t, I’ll make sure he knows I can.”
