Chapter 853: Stay in touch?
“Lily hasn’t changed, has she?” Cassandra chuckled, looking at the pink ticket she picked up today for the fan club reunion. “She’s still as enthusiastic as I remembered.”
Dean chuckled, staring at her across from him. “I wasn’t always around back then, but somehow, I found it interesting that the entire school was hit by this strange phenomenon called Penny.”
“She was very cute back then,” Cassandra laughed, recalling how adorable Penny used to be. “We always thought she was a toddler, not a freshman. Kiara even secretly kept her stickers because she likes cute things.”
“She was wide and small… like a gas tank.”
“Pfft —” Cassandra covered her mouth, holding back her laughter. Laughing at his comment didn’t feel quite right. “Please don’t say that. It feels wrong. Didn’t you two have an apprenticeship under Professor Singh?”
Dean shook his head. “We did, but perhaps it was the age gap that made us a little… competitive with each other.”
“Oh?”
“Penny is smart and, to be honest, since she’s younger, I didn’t want to look like a clown,” Dean continued with a slight smile. “She made me study and work twice as hard as everyone else. I didn’t have to do that in the Star Section.”
“She made us all work and study very hard,” Cassandra added, remembering such a memorable time in the past. “She and her older brother, Atlas. Though I was more scared of Atlas since he’s more serious.”
“I heard.” Dean nodded, followed by a brief silence between them.
For some reason, the two of them went quiet as they reminisced about their time in the Star Student Sections. It reminded them just how easy life was back then. At least, for Cassandra, it seemed easier. As for Dean, it might not have been as simple for him as it was for everyone else, given the weight of his responsibilities since childhood. But there were still good and fun moments.
One of them was the memory of Penny and her section doing a horror booth.
Thinking about it, Dean couldn’t help but smile. Cassandra, on the other hand, raised an eyebrow.
“It was a fun memory,” she remarked, causing the smile on his face to stiffen a little. “But Penny has changed a lot, hasn’t she?”
“Has she?” Dean tilted his head slightly. “I don’t think so. She’s still the same as she was years ago.”
Cassandra blinked a few times, knitting her brows. “Are you and Penny… close friends, Dean?”
“Huh?”
“I just noticed you were smiling while talking about her,” she observed. “And then that look in your eyes…”
Cassandra trailed off, pursing her lips as she forced a smile. “Never mind.”
“Did you just stop and change your mind about asking me something?” he pointed out, making her chuckle a little.
“I’m a therapist, but I don’t want to pry.”
“You can ask me anything.”
“It’s okay, Dean.” Cassandra shook her head lightly. “It’s not important.”
“For me, it is.”
Her brows rose slightly in surprise, and she looked at him in confusion. “Why is it important to you?”
“Because I’m interested.”
“What?”
Dean smiled in response, leaving her with no other clue than what he had said. “Let’s eat.”
“O… okay.” Cassandra nodded slightly, her eyes falling to the servings in front of them.
As Dean casually picked up his cutlery, she couldn’t help but glance at him. A shallow breath slipped past her lips as she secretly shook her head, refocusing her attention on her food.

Nothing unusual happened during their reunion. Although they weren’t that close back in the day, they were still able to talk about random things, like how they had been, news they’d heard about each other, and so on.
“I’m surprised you heard about that,” Cassandra said as they were walking out of the establishment.
Dean smiled subtly, glancing at her. “Why are you surprised? The article you wrote has earned a lot of respect. As someone in the same field, I was impressed.”
“Thanks.” Flattered, Cassandra tucked her hair behind her ear. “I’ve also read the articles you wrote while you were still doing your internship. They’re… amazing.”
“Are they?” Dean shrugged. “Well, I wasn’t focused on that.”
“How come?”
By this point, the two of them had reached her ride. Cassandra turned to face him, holding her handbag with both hands, her eyes looking up at him curiously. All she saw was the slight smile on his face, but a look of sorrow briefly flickered across his eyes. It was brief, but she caught it.
“Because when someone is doing more than you… your efforts get easily overlooked,” Dean said with a mild smile. “Anyway, thank you for this opportunity.”
Dean paused, taking a large step toward her. He didn’t move aside, taking her off guard as he leaned in until his shoulder almost brushed hers. He reached out to the door behind her, drawing his head back slightly, unfazed that their faces were only a few palms away from each other.
“Stay in touch?” he mused, his lips curling into a charming smile.
For a moment, Cassandra was frozen in place, gazing at his charming smile. His perfume wafted through her nostrils, and his body heat caressed her skin.
“Mhm,” she hummed, gulping down the sudden tension in her throat. “Sure. Keep in touch. Nice seeing you again, Dean.”
“I’ll see you around,” he nodded, motioning with his hand for her to get in while his other hand settled on the door.
Cassandra pursed her lips and turned, getting into the car as Dean held the door for her. Once he was certain she was in, he gently closed the door after flashing her one last smile.
With that, Dean took a step back, shoving his hands in his pockets. He kept his eyes on the window where she sat, watching the car slowly drive away from his vantage point. He stood there with a smile on his face, but when the car was already in the distance, he turned to where his own car was parked.
The moment he did, coldness replaced the smile on his face. His eyes glinted with malevolence, revealing a look he didn’t carry around Cassandra, the person Jonathan Russel had been intimate with for the past few months.
