Chapter 912: Politics
[Summit School of Excellence]
When Penny and Slater returned to the open court, they stopped as soon as they arrived. Deep lines appeared between their brows as they looked around at the audience, who were oddly silent for some reason.
“What’s going on?” Slater blurted out under his breath. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think we just walked into a church.”
That’s how quiet the place was.
“Did something—”
“Woahhh!!!”
Penny and Slater jumped from their spot in surprise as the entire court shook with everyone’s united cheering. Their eyes widened in horror and confusion. Looking around the court, they saw that everyone had returned to cheering as if nothing had just happened.
“What is going on…?” Penny trailed off, her eyes drifting to the open court. As she did, she couldn’t help but glance at the scoreboard, which immediately explained why everyone had suddenly quieted and then cheered so loudly.
The score was… a tie again.
“Huh?” Slater scrunched up his nose in dismay. “What happened here while we were away?”
Penny thought the same. With the same curiosity swirling in their heads, Penny and Slater made their way back to their spot as Charles’s team called a timeout. When they sat down, Penny turned to her left and right, then behind, as Benjamin crawled his way back to his seat.
“What happened?” she asked curiously. “How come the score is tied again? Something interesting happened?”
Nina pursed her lips, looking at Penny with a complicated expression. Seeing this, Penny furrowed her brows and turned to Haines. To her surprise, Haines’s expression was dark as well. Slater, on the other hand, saw his uncle’s expression and faced James squarely.
James’s expression was blank, as if he had just lost his mind or couldn’t process what he’d just witnessed. However, James was neither Haines nor Nina, so Slater flicked the tip of his ear to snap him back to reality.
“Ah!” James quickly covered his ear, looking at Slater in disbelief. “Slater! Why would you do that?”
“Your mouth was open, and I saw a fly almost flying in,” Slater returned shamelessly. “I just care about you and your health. A fly lands on anything but clean, and who knows what kind of bacteria it’s carrying in your mouth?”
James frowned deeply. “Nonsense!”
“I know, but what happened here?” Slater asked nonchalantly. “Why do you look like you guys are pissed off?”
“It’s because this match has become something else,” Haines breathed out under his breath, making Penny and Slater look back at him. “It’s not Max’s team versus Hugo’s team. It’s Hugo’s team versus… Hugo’s team.”
Slater and Penny furrowed his brows, and they both blurted out, “Huh?” in unison.
“Penny, is your marriage alright?” Nina inquired, tugging at Penny’s hand. “Otherwise, why is your husband sabotaging you?”
“Renren is sabotaging me? How?”
“Miss Penny, divorce him and ask for a ridiculous amount—no, half of everything in his name. Better yet, ask for a divorce and take everything he has!” Benjamin roared, resting his arms on Penny’s backrest.
Penny looked back at Benjamin, only to see him so upset about something. This was the first time she had heard Benjamin this angry, even though he was often upset, as if he had been conceived out of frustration and regret. However, Benjamin had never suggested divorce—this was the first time.
“What are you guys talking about…?” Penny wondered, even more puzzled and intrigued now.
Nina, Benjamin, and even Haines sighed heavily. Even James looked upset, as if he also couldn’t believe how this match had turned into something else.
“I’ll say it,” Haines announced, knowing all these kids might add or subtract from the truth and have a different perspective on all of this. “See that scoreboard?”
Slater and Penny instinctively gazed at the scoreboard, which showed the teams tied score.
“Earlier, our team had already surpassed Max’s team. When you left, there was a fifteen-point difference between the two teams. It even reached a thirty-point difference,” Haines continued. “Everyone thought that this was the end if the score reached a forty-point difference. But then, something terrible happened.”
“What kind of terrible?” Penny and Slater asked, their curiosity piqued.

They immediately turned their gaze to the court as Zoren stood there.
For a moment, Penny thought something terrible had happened to her husband and that this game had exhausted him, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
“And then, Zoren kept scoring points for Max’s team,” Haines added, causing Penny and Slater’s minds to blank. “If not, he would deliberately do something for them to score.”
“What?!” they gasped in unison, their faces showing disbelief.
Haines turned to Penny. “If the two of you didn’t fight, then he’s probably doing this to make you dependent on him.”
“I can’t believe him!” Benjamin huffed. “No matter how obsessed he is with Miss Penny, he shouldn’t do this! Her company is at stake here!”
“Penny, tell me this is something you and your husband already talked about?” Nina asked worriedly. If not, this could mean betrayal from her husband. She held Penny’s hand, looking more scared and worried as if she were the wife and this were her marriage at stake.
“What nonsense are you guys talking about?” Slater frowned. “Why would he do that?”
“The first time, we thought he was just confused and mistook the enemy’s basket for theirs,” James spoke sternly, watching Slater and Penny look in his direction. “But then, he kept doing it… accumulating violations. He’s just one violation away from getting kicked out of the game.”
“Not just that! But even Sir Atlas scored a point for the team!” Benjamin added in frustration. “These men are so unreliable! I am very disappointed!”
“Penny, what are you going to do?” Nina asked worriedly. “Should you go down there and talk to them? Don’t beat them up! I’m sure they have a reason for this!”
Slater cracked his knuckles, even though he knew the only thing he should warm up now was his mouth since it was his weapon against his brothers. Penny could deal with Zoren, but Slater could nag his brothers until their ears were bleeding!
“…” Penny studied everyone’s grim faces and then slowly set her eyes on the court, catching Charles scolding his team. “Did you say even First Brother scored for Max’s team?”
“Yes!” Benjamin and Nina answered at the same time.
Hearing that, Penny just smiled and nodded. “Who else scored for Max other than Zoren and First Brother?” She glanced at them, only to confirm that it was just those two. “Then, don’t worry.”
“Huh?” was everyone’s reaction.
Penny flashed them a smile as she giggled. “Politics.”
