Chapter 923: Bring it on
“You know what I find very interesting throughout this reunion? It’s your brother’s relationship with Zoren Pierson. You should watch your Second Brother, especially. You thought he was dead, but no, he wasn’t. Otherwise, Zoren Pierson and Finn Davis wouldn’t have a hole in their heads.”
The corner of Jonathan’s mouth curled into a sinister smirk, his eyes glinting malevolently as they shifted to Penny’s side profile. Drawing his head back a little, he casually slipped his hand into his pockets.
“See you around, Penelope,” he drawled, gazing down at her before stepping to the side to walk past her.
Meanwhile, Penny cast her eyes to the floor, her brows raising slowly.
The drunken and sober Penny wasn’t all that different. They were the same person, living in entirely different lifetimes. Their train of thought was the same, with just a bit more craziness when she was drunk.
“You want to see something more interesting?” she whispered, causing Jonathan to slow his steps. But before he could look, she slid her foot in front of his, kicking it back. When he lost his balance, she grabbed his arm and, in one swift move, carried his weight over her shoulder and slammed him to the floor.
THUD!
Everything happened so fast that before Jonathan realized it, his back had already hit the floor. The sound his body made was loud and painful. However, his shock overtook everything else as he found himself staring at the high ceiling of the gymnasium.
Even the crowd was clueless until they heard the loud thud, as if someone had fallen violently. When they turned and moved aside, what met their eyes was Penny, placing a foot on Jonathan’s chest as she slowly squatted down.
“Hey,” she called, gazing down at him without blinking. “Surprise?”
The sober Penny was neither better nor worse than the drunken version of her. If anything, she was simply more careful. Having lived, suffered, and died, she approached things with caution, meticulousness, and quiet resolve. She wouldn’t let her intrusive thoughts control her. Her tolerance was high, and her patience long, all for the simple reason that she didn’t want to go back to prison.
The drunken version was the polar opposite. She let her intrusive thoughts take over and acted on them. Not that she wasn’t careful, but rather, she wasn’t afraid of going back to the place that birthed this version of her. She’d been there once, and if the reason was… right, she could go back.
Penny sneered, taking in the look on his face. “Bring it on, little guy. If you think there’s nothing I wouldn’t do, you’re wrong.” She paused, then lowered her head, pressing her foot on his chest. She uttered her next words under her breath, just loud enough for him to hear. “I don’t care who killed who; the only thing I care about is… who killed me. Test me, and I’ll go back to prison as your murderer. This time, it’s gonna be real.”
Jonathan’s breath hitched as his eyes widened, staring into the bloodthirsty gaze fixed on him. In that moment, he knew Penny wasn’t interested in playing the complicated politics and schemes they’d been engaged in.
She was ready to sully her hands… and he knew why. Those hands of hers were already sullied to begin with. Jonathan might not have known her on a personal level in their previous life, but he had heard many stories about her while she was in prison. Penny was one of the worst inmates—always ending up in solitary confinement—but every time she came back, she was worse than before.
“Penny!” Suddenly, Dean’s voice rang out, darting his eyes between Penny and Jonathan. “What are you two doing?”
Penny ignored Dean, arching an eyebrow at Jonathan. “I hope that gets through your thick head since words weren’t enough to warn you.”
After saying her piece, she placed her hands on her knees and pushed herself up. Her bodysuit bounced up and down a little, giving her an odd appearance as though she hadn’t just slammed someone to the ground.
“Ahh… how nice to spit in your face,” she casually commented, snapping her eyes to Dean. She raised an eyebrow and tilted her head to the side. Without saying a word, she shrugged and glanced at Jonathan, still lying flat on the floor.
“See you around, Jonathan,” she said once more before walking off.
As Penny walked away, the crowd surrounding them instinctively parted. It had been many years, but everyone knew Penny was not to be messed with—because when she retaliated, they would understand the true meaning of the word.
“Goodness, what did he tell her?” someone from the crowd murmured, eyes on the retreating Penny. “I just saw them talking earlier.”
“That escalated quickly.”
“I thought she changed a lot when I learned she’s the CEO of Prime Group, but today, I realized she hasn’t changed much.”
The next person nodded in agreement. “She’s still as goofy and fun as I remember… and just as fierce. Probably even fiercer now.”
“I feel sorry for him,” another person shook their head. “What did he do and say to her?”
“I don’t think he said anything offensive,” someone else commented. “He didn’t seem like the type. Besides, he stood up for Nina earlier. How could she act like that? Is she being cocky now?”
The crowd’s opinion wasn’t divided—most believed in Penny’s character. After all, even though they weren’t close to her, they knew she wasn’t the type to start trouble. A few, however, wondered if Penny’s arrogance had taken over.
Jonathan didn’t care about that, his gaze fixed on Penny as she walked away. When he saw a hand reaching out to him from his peripheral vision, his eyes met Slater’s cold, emotionless gaze.
‘Does he want me to take his hand or not?’ Jonathan wondered. Regardless, he reached out and grabbed Slater’s hand. To his surprise, Slater casually pulled him up without breaking a sweat, despite the abruptness of the move.

Before Jonathan could even process what had happened, he was already back on his feet. When he turned to face Slater, ready to express his fake gratitude, Slater had already walked past him, following Penny’s tracks.
