Chapter 936: A sudden proposal
“Finn?”
Was Nina dreaming?
That was the first question that came to her mind. How could she not wonder? Just earlier today, Finn had been lying on a hospital bed, the same as he had for the past weeks. He couldn’t just wake up and come to her. If anything, he should still be in the hospital for checkups to know the next steps of his recovery and for him to rest more to prepare his body for rehabilitation.
Even though he still looked pale and sickly, showing signs of his poor health, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Hence, she denied what was in front of her.
“Haha…” She let out a helpless laugh, shaking her head slightly. “I must be imagining this because I kept hearing his name all day.”
Today, of all days, Nina had heard Finn’s name more often than ever before.
Everyone had been talking about him—mentioning him, reminiscing—and Nina had found herself doing the same. More than she ever had in the past. Even back then—way back when Finn had been pursuing her—she’d avoided talking about him. She would mention him and their relationship in passing but never delved into it deeply. She wasn’t sure why.
But today, almost every conversation she’d had seemed to circle back to Finn. That was likely the reason she thought she was hallucinating now. After all, she’d had a few drinks. Not enough to get her drunk or tipsy, but enough to make her mood unpredictable.
With that thought, Nina smacked her lips and forced a smile.
“It’s nice to see you, Finn,” she muttered. “But not like this.”
If she was going to see Finn again, she’d rather it not be a hallucination. And with that, she turned on her heel and began to walk away. A heaviness tugged at her chest, making her realize just how desperate she was for Finn to get better.
But as she started to leave, a sudden chill ran through her wrist as a hand grasped it. Nina froze, her brows rising in surprise. This touch didn’t feel like a hallucination. Turning back, her eyes immediately locked with Finn’s.
“If not like this,” he whispered, his voice barely audible, “then how? How would you want to see me?”
Confusion formed on her face as she turned fully toward him. Her lips parted as if to speak, but no words came out. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, and a lump formed in her throat.
“You…” she began, her voice faltering. It was the wrong thing to say, but she couldn’t stop herself. “… are here?”
Finn’s lips curled into a faint smile. “I am.”
His answer hit her like a snap of the fingers, jolting her awake. Panic surged through her, and she clasped his arm, scanning him from head to toe.
“Oh no…” she murmured under her breath, her gaze darting between his face and body. “Finn, why are you here? You should be in the hospital. You’ve been unconscious for weeks! You can’t just leave the hospital and travel!”
“Thanks to a certain someone, I don’t have a single sore muscle,” he said with a subtle smile, giving her a knowing look. “Getting up wasn’t the hard part, at least.”
Her lips curved downward, unimpressed by his attempt at humor. “That’s not funny, Finn. I don’t know how you managed to get out, but we need to go back. Why would you leave the hospital the moment you woke up? Do you not care about your life? Let’s go back right now.”
Without waiting for his response, Nina grabbed his arm and tried to pull him with her. But as she turned to lead him away, Finn tugged her arm back and wrapped her in his embrace. His sudden action froze her in place, leaving her standing like a statue as his chin came to rest on her shoulder.
“Nina,” he murmured, his shallow breath brushing against her neck. Finn tightened his hold on her slightly, closing his eyes as if savoring her warmth.
It had been a while.
When Finn had first woken up, he hadn’t realized just how much time had passed. But now, with her sweet perfume in his nose, her voice in his ears, and her warmth surrounding him, the truth hit him. It had been far too long.
“I… missed you,” he whispered, his arms tightening around her as if he never wanted to let go. “I’m sorry.”
Nina’s lips trembled as a tear slid down her cheek. She wanted to say something, anything, but she could only lower her head as the overwhelming weight of her emotions washed over her.
For a while, neither of them spoke. Finn held her close, and she let him, their hearts beating in sync as they stood silently in each other’s presence.
Finally, Nina raised a hand to rest it on the arm wrapped around her. Myriads of thoughts swirled in her mind—What happened? Take care of yourself. I was so worried.—but none of them escaped her lips. She was too busy fighting back her tears.
Finn buried his face deeper into her shoulder, his hands trembling slightly. “I missed you… so much,” he whispered again, his voice cracking. Nina let out a quiet whimper in response.
“I was scared,” he continued. “All this time, I felt like I was trapped in a place where no matter how hard I screamed, I couldn’t wake up. It was terrifying.”

He paused, reflecting on the sensation of being in a coma. It wasn’t at all what anyone would expect—it was complicated. If he had to describe it, it was like knowing nothing but the fear lodged deep in his heart. Finn hated fear, and he hated feeling powerless.
To survive that fear, he’d forced himself to adapt to it. To endure it. But what kept him from succumbing completely was hearing her voice, even in his sleep.
“Nina Reed,” he said softly, her name slipping from his lips like a prayer. He paused, swallowing hard against the tension in his throat.
“Please marry me.”
