Chapter 940: The end of the long struggle
“Even if it’s fake, I knew you were incapable of shedding tears, which makes me wonder… how much of what you told her was truth and how much of it was lies?”
Lies?
Finn chuckled at the thought. “Surprisingly, none of what I told her is fake.”
“Oh?” A look of surprise washed over Jonathan’s face, expecting Finn to deny everything. “I didn’t expect you to be so honest, Finn. At least, I expected a pathetic denial.”
“You know me just as much as I know you. There’s no reason for me to deny it.”
Slowly, Jonathan’s subtle smile stretched into a devious one. “Even in this state, you impress me.”
“Impressing you was never a goal. There’s no one I’d like to impress other than Zoren Pierson, but sure.”
“Haha.” Jonathan’s smile slightly faded, his eyes sharpening. “Finn Davis, I’m curious. Have you always… desired Nina, even when she was my wife?”
This time, Finn didn’t answer because the answer was obvious.
In their past life, Finn had to admit he could not love someone like he did now. He felt a bit sorry for Nina, but what she got from her marriage to Jonathan was something she had already seen coming. After all, compared to now, Nina had been far more ambitious and terrifyingly selfish in the past.
“Penny changed her,” Finn breathed out. “Penny changed everyone around her.”
“Does that apply to you?”
“Nina changed me.”
“Oh.”
Finn casually shifted in the same spot, facing Jonathan’s direction. “You’ve also changed, Jonathan.”
“Haha. You think so?”
“Like I said, I know you just as well as you know me. After all, we’ve been through a lot together in the past, and I’d like to believe, one way or another, we were friends.” Finn shrugged, still a little unsure if “friends” was the right term for their relationship in the past life. “Therefore, I also know you’ve changed a bit. Unlike before, you’re more… careful now.”
Finn took a step, eyes still on the man. Despite his sickly appearance and the evident signs of weight loss, his eyes remained as sharp as ever. Even his reaction was mild, but unfaltering.
“Either way, being careful… isn’t going to change anything, Jon,” he continued with certainty. “The difference between the past and now is that you’re up against not just Zoren Pierson, but Penelope… Bennet-Pierson, as well.”
“The only reason you got close to your goal in the past was because you caught her off guard.” He shook his head, eyes locked with Jonathan’s. “You’re not taking her off guard this time around.”
Jonathan laughed. “Is that the reason you don’t mind being honest with me about your relationship with Nina? You think Penelope Bennet will protect you?”
“It’s one of the reasons, but the main one is… I’m not scared of you.” Finn smiled, but this time, it was a smirk. “Not when I just knocked on death’s door and was not given access to it.”
“Interesting.” Jonathan tilted his head, his smile now gone. His eyes glinted, studying Finn from head to toe before he shrugged. “Well, it was nice seeing you again, Finn Davis. I didn’t want you to die… not so fast. I’m pretty sure we’ll see each other more often.”
Having said that, Jonathan turned his back on Finn. The latter, on the other hand, studied Jonathan’s back as he walked away.
“Jonathan Pierson,” called Finn, but Jonathan’s steps didn’t stop. “Who are you being careful of?”
The moment those words left Finn’s mouth, Jonathan’s steps halted. He hadn’t turned around when Finn spoke again.
“And why are you trying so hard to get on Nina’s side?” Finn continued. “Why, Nina? What’s so special about her that she’s part of your list?”
As Finn mentioned, he knew Jonathan just as well as the man knew him. In other words, even if Jonathan didn’t say it, Finn was aware that Jonathan had a list of names he was going after. Jonathan was always like that.
Jonathan was a vengeful man, and he was someone who always got even.
It was not clear to Finn when Jonathan first made his appearance. However, after some thinking and the orchestrated incident, Finn had some more insights. It was ironic that this was clear to him now, even though he was still physically weak.

“What did Nina do to you in the past, Jonathan?”
A shadow cast over Jonathan’s face as he lowered his head. His eyes glinted malevolently, his expression entirely different from before, and it was more frightening than one might imagine.
Jonathan glanced over his shoulder and smirked. “You claim to know me, so I assume you’d figure it out on your own.”
After saying that, Jonathan resumed his steps, walking away with a sharp look on his face.

[FLASHBACK]
Reporters flocked to the exit of the state prison, waiting for someone to come out. All of them were in disbelief, but the eagerness in their eyes to get their next big headline was evident. When the loud electronic noise from the huge gates echoed in the air, they quickly jumped from their spots.
At the same time, bodyguards in uniform ran to the gates to ensure the person coming out would be protected from the reporters. As soon as they stood in their positions, microphones were shoved into their faces, and the weight of the reporters trying to break through their defense lines pressed on their bodies.
Coming out of the gates was none other than the controversial man who had been sentenced to capital punishment, only for his lawyers to appeal and change the sentence to a not-guilty verdict: Jonathan.
“Director Pierson, what can you say—”
“Rumors have it that you bribed—”
“Mr. Pierson, now that you’re out, what can you say to Zoren Pierson, the person responsible for your indictment?”
“Mr. Pierson—”
“Mister Pierson—”
Questions from the reporters echoed in the air as they spoke at the same time. However, despite their aggressiveness to get an answer from Jonathan, the latter didn’t speak a word. The questions only stopped when Jonathan got in the backseat and the door was shut closed.
“Uh… so annoying,” he muttered, glancing at the window, only to see more cameras and reporters still trying to get an answer. “Tch.”
Jonathan clicked his tongue before glancing at the rearview mirror. “Let’s go.”
“Yes, sir.”
As the car started moving away, Jonathan slowly shifted his gaze to the front passenger row.
“How’s the situation?” he asked, watching as his female assistant slowly looked back at him. “Zoren Pierson—still alive?”
“I’ve sent someone to do your orders, sir,” the female assistant said in a flat tone. “Apparently, someone’s already there with him.”
“Oh?”
“I told our men to stand by to avoid getting involved in his death.”
“Who is with him now?”
“Hugo Bennet.”
Jonathan arched a brow as his assistant handed him an envelope, which contained photos of Zoren and someone who was holding a gun against him. He smirked and shrugged, leaning back comfortably.
“If he doesn’t shoot him, make sure someone else does and make it look like the fugitive did it.”
“Yes, sir.”
Pleased, Jonathan relaxed in the backseat and glanced out the window. “Where are you taking me now?”
“Home, sir. That’s the only place we can arrange for you to stay… for now.”
“I see.”
With that, Jonathan idled and relaxed, trying to nap in the comfort of his luxurious car. Prison had been hell, and because of Zoren, he couldn’t have special treatment.
When Jonathan reached home, he thought he didn’t have to deal with anyone at the moment. He was wrong.
Because in his house, he realized someone else also lived there: his wife, Nina Bennet-Pierson.
And he was wrong to think that a not-guilty verdict marked the continuation of his life. It wasn’t. It was the end of his long struggle.
