Chapter 947: Who said I am unemployed?
In the end, Allen and Atlas found themselves walking out of the building, each carrying their own box.
“Sir…” Allen sighed, gazing at Atlas beside him before glancing at everyone around the lobby. “Is parading our exit necessary?”
They could have just used the elevator from the CEO’s floor straight to the parking lot, which was the way Atlas usually preferred. However, it seemed Atlas wanted to leave the company while letting everyone know he had been kicked out.
Another deep sigh escaped Allen as he lowered his head. ‘Although I’m not kicked out, but resigned, I still feel embarrassed by this. Everyone’s looking at us as if we were naked.’
“Don’t look down.” Suddenly, Atlas spoke quietly. “You did nothing wrong, so keep your head high.”
Slowly, Allen raised his head to look at his boss. Although everyone was already staring at this embarrassing situation, Atlas didn’t budge. Instead, he kept walking with the same face he wore whenever he entered or left the company — the same expression he used every second of the day.
“Sir Atlas…” Allen sighed helplessly but continued walking out with his boss proudly.
Atlas was right. They had done nothing wrong, so they could walk out of the building with their heads held high. If anything, the company had just lost two of its greatest assets.
After their little parade, they soon reached the parking space. They put their boxes in the trunk, and both men stood behind the car, gazing at it.
“You should’ve accepted his offer,” Atlas said, looking at his assistant. “Although he’s going to send you to another department, he can’t change your hourly rate.”
“Sir, did you think I work here for the money?”
“The last time I gave you a raise, you were so happy you almost ended up losing your life.”
“…”
“I simply don’t want to burden you with this.”
Allen smiled helplessly, knowing his boss wasn’t showing any emotion, as usual, but was sincere with his words. “The salary is one thing, but I’d stay true to what I said. I’d rather end up unemployed than have him boss me around. After all, Director Bennet — I mean Stephen Bennet might not be the person who pushed me off the stairs. However, Sven Bennet is still his son. If you’re not in the company, then there’s no point for me to put up with him.”
“Allen.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Do you like men?”
“Huh?”
“Just in case I did or said something that gave you the wrong impression, I’d like to clear up that I am not interested in men. Though I am equally uninterested in women and anything that breathes, still not with men,” Atlas remarked sternly and clearly, as if he were trying to make a point. “If that’s clear, then let’s go.”
After saying his piece, Atlas turned and walked away. As for Allen, he was left opening and closing his mouth, his face twitching.
“What did he… huh?!” Allen scrunched up his nose in disbelief, rewinding everything he had said before Atlas made those comments. “Did he think… I was confessing to him?”
Knowing Atlas, Allen was certain that something he said had alarmed his boss. After all, Atlas wouldn’t draw the line if he wasn’t concerned.
“Sir! It’s not like that! All I’m saying is I’m loyal to you and that I will only serve you — no one else!” Allen gasped as he slammed the trunk closed, only to see Atlas looking at him in more disbelief from the driver’s side. “No — not like that serve!”
“I didn’t think of any other serving until you gave meaning to it.”
“You’re the one who’s giving meaning to what I’m saying!” Allen took a step forward, only to see Atlas flinch a little and step back. “Sir! It’s not like that — I have a girlfriend whom I’d like to marry and have kids with!”
“…” Atlas didn’t respond, but his face finally showed something that screamed, ‘Are you sure the girlfriend isn’t just a front?’
Allen gasped, at the brink of tears and tearing his hair apart. “All I’m saying is, after working for you all these years, I realized that the salary isn’t the most important thing in work. But rather, the environment and the people around me — my boss. I might get the same pay if I stayed, but I am sure it won’t be the same anymore. I’d rather work at a lower rate but in a competitively healthy environment than keep the same pay but in a toxic workplace.”
At this point, Allen was more exasperated by this discussion than the fact that he was now officially unemployed. He could only hope that after clarifying his side, Atlas wouldn’t have doubts about him.

Thankfully, Atlas didn’t press the matter and accepted Allen’s explanation. If not, Allen could only imagine how Atlas would keep him at arm’s length just because his boss believed Allen had developed romantic feelings for him.
Thinking about it, Allen couldn’t help but shiver. Surely, his boss was reliable on many things. However, there were still times that proved Atlas wasn’t perfect, and that he was only human. A weird one at that.
“Do you have other plans now?” Atlas asked, breaking the silence in the car.
Allen glanced at his boss, sighing in disbelief because now, Atlas was acting as if he had just not accused his assistant of having feelings for him. “I expected today to be a regular workday with a little twist, considering the chairman’s situation. So, I don’t have other plans since I’m officially unemployed now, sir.”
“I see.” Atlas nodded. “Then I’ll drop you off at your place.”
“Sir, you don’t have to drop me off at my place. I can take the bus from the nearest station. Please do not bother.”
“Alright.”
Silence quickly fell in the vehicle after Atlas answered. Allen would sneak a look at the driver’s seat, keeping his mouth drawn into a thin line.
All Atlas’s life, he was set to be the next head of the Bennet Family. So now that Atlas had handed in his resignation letter, came the million-dollar question:
“Sir, what’s going to happen now that you’re unemployed?”
Before Allen could get an answer, he caught the corner of Atlas’s mouth hooked into a smirk.
“Sir? Why are you smiling?” Allen blurted out, only to see Atlas glance at him briefly.
“Who said I am unemployed?”
