[Global Prime Logistics]
Stephen sat down in his office and huffed. He leaned against his swivel chair, closing his eyes tightly as he tried to breathe. After some time, he reopened his eyes. Even now, his heart was beating so fast he could barely breathe normally.
Ever since yesterday, he had been having a hard time breathing. However, he could never show it to anyone — not even to the heavens or the devils in hell.
“Ah, goodness.” Stephen peeled his back off the chair and pulled out a drawer. He looked around his office cautiously while pressing the corner surface of the drawer.
Click.
The sound the surface made was faint, but it was enough to make him jolt in surprise. Lowering his gaze, beads of sweat started to break out on his forehead and back. His hand trembled as he reached for the slightly lifted surface, which had never been there before.
As soon as he took a peek at what was inside, he gulped. Inside the small secret space in one of the drawers of his desk was a pistol and a burner phone. He reached out to grab the phone but stopped as his fingers brushed against the cold surface of the pistol.
“This is a real gun,” he breathed out, his heart thudding as if it would leap out of his chest. “A real gun they gave me.”
Stephen paused to take another deep breath. He had to stabilize his breathing and his racing heart first. Otherwise, he might end up in the hospital as well. After some time, he opened his eyes with clear determination in them.
This time, he reached out for the burner phone and squeezed himself into his seat. Who knew who was watching him through these glass walls behind him? It was better to be safe than sorry, because right now, Stephen didn’t feel like he was taking charge of the Bennet Family but was instead an agent on a dangerous and deadly mission.
Stephen peeled off the earpiece that was taped on top of the phone, placing it in his ear carefully. He placed the phone in front of him, positioning it in a blind spot in case someone was watching him from afar. Then, he called the only number on the phone.
Ring… ring… ring…
Stephen tapped his finger on the armrest, his heart starting to pick up again as he listened to each ring. Thankfully, after the fourth ring, the call went through.
“He—Hello?” His voice cracked with nervousness, a little fear in his heart that the person on the other end of the line might be someone else, not the one he was expecting.
For a short while, the line was filled with nothing but silence until the person on the other end of the line spoke.
Charles Bennet.
“I swear to God, if my wife decides to divorce me, I’ll kill you with my bare hands and make sure you know you’re going to die,” was the first thing Charles said in an irritated voice. But contrary to the expected reaction, Stephen sighed in relief.
“Oh, God… Charles…” Stephen breathed out, his body starting to shake. “I feel like I’m going to die, anyway. This is insane. I can’t do this any longer. I feel like they’ll find out soon!”
“They will find out if you don’t get your act together.” Charles scrunched up his nose in disgust, while Haines, in the same place as him, just watched and listened to the conversation. “Well, anyway, you sound like you’re hyperventilating — you should be. How dare you drag my wife into it as well?”
Stephen pressed his mouth together. “I’m sorry about that, but you told me to act on what I’d do if it’s true. And do it as naturally as I can! You said not to break our character, so I didn’t!”
“Well, if that’s what you’re going to do if this didn’t come to this, you are such a horrible person.”
“…” Stephen mentally wept, thinking of the plan they had come up with. It wasn’t like Stephen wanted to shame and put Allison in this situation. However, Allison was already involved, and with everything at play, Stephen couldn’t break character even though his heart was drumming in his chest.
“Charles, focus.” Haines’s calm voice was heard from the other end of the line. “Stephen, did Atlas come there?”
“Ye—yes.” Stephen cleared his throat as his voice started to crack again. “He came and I kicked him out. But he dared hand me a resignation letter — isn’t that suspicious!? He should’ve let me shine to prove that I betrayed all of you!”
“No, it’s perfect,” Haines’s faint voice was heard again, followed by Charles clearing his throat.
“Don’t worry about Atlas, Stephen. Atlas is Atlas, and what he did is something one would expect. My eldest has so much pride. Don’t focus on him, as he has something else to do now that he is out of Global Prime Logistics.”
Stephen pressed his lips together, calming down a little now that he could talk to Charles and Haines after everything. After all, the last communication he had with them was when they did all the planning at Mama’s. They hadn’t communicated just to be on the more cautious side.
“Fine,” Stephen breathed out, nodding in understanding. “But before we can talk about anything, is the chairman alright? What is that drug you asked me to give him, by the way? I thought he was going to die!”
Charles hummed and rubbed his chin before shrugging. “He’s going to be fine. Don’t worry about him. He’s a villainous person, so he’s going to last longer than anyone.”

Meanwhile, in the hospital, Chairman Bennet was reclining in the hospital bed with a deep frown on his face. He looked at the person wearing a nurse uniform standing right next to his bed.
“Why am I here? And why is my insufferable son’s face on that television?” he asked in displeasure, watching the nurse smile at him.
“Chairman, I also do not know, as I am only following orders,” she said, handing him a remote control. “If you want to learn what is happening, then you should watch and hear what your son has to say. I’m certain he’ll explain things to you in full detail.”
He arched a brow. “I suppose you’re not a nurse.”
“I am not.”
“You are?”
“You can call me Grace, Chairman Bennet,” Grace’s smile broadened. “I am Penelope Bennet’s primary legal attorney and also her friend.”
