Chapter 974: What happened?
[Skyline Plaza: Zoren’s Home]
“Just what is going on here?” Slater mumbled, looking around at his family as they gathered in Zoren’s home for a reason. He stood by the window, looking out to see if Zoren had returned with Penny.
“Don’t worry about them,” Atlas casually remarked as he read a magazine on the sofa. “They’ll come home soon.”
Wild’s expression twisted. “She’s probably trying to get away from trouble.”
“That little beggar,” Jessa clicked her tongue and shook her head. She was only here because she was interested in watching this family drama unfold. After all, Penny had “used” Old Mrs. Pierson to give all the men in their family something else to do.
Allison frowned worriedly, looking at everyone around the living room. After a moment, she looked up as Charles stood up. Not just her, but everyone gazed at him.
“Charles…?”
Charles huffed. “Stay here. I’ll wait for them outside.”
“I’m coming with you,” Haines volunteered, standing up from his seat with his cane. “I’m a little worried as well. Zoren wouldn’t go out to fetch his wife if there was nothing wrong.”
“Or it could be that he’s just helping his wife create a believable excuse, so she doesn’t have to deal with us,” Wild suggested, to which Jessa agreed with a nod.
“You lot know Penny. She will do all these things and then try to get away from it,” she remarked, but Haines and Charles didn’t listen.
Instead, Charles and Haines walked toward the front door. The rain tonight was heavy, with occasional thunder, as if a typhoon had just landed in the country.
“Mhph!” Wild huffed. “Whatever. I’m not buying whatever she is planning to get away from this.”
“I’ll stay with them.” Atlas closed the magazine and placed it on the table.
“I’m coming too!” Hugo smiled and jumped from his seat, following his First Brother.
Allison pursed her lips, and when she couldn’t take it anymore, she rose from her seat. “Jessa, Wild, just wait here. I’ll wait for Penny outside.”
“Ali — tch!” Jessa hissed, her expression sour as Allison rushed to follow her husband and sons outside the front door. By the time Allison reached the front door, she stopped when Slater reached for the knob before her.
Allison gazed up at her youngest son, only to see Slater flash her a gentle smile.
“I’ll go with you, Mom,” he offered, opening the door for her. “After you.”
“Slater…” Allison’s eyes softened as she smiled back, nodding at him.
With that, Wild and Jessa were the only ones left in the living room. Wild was still grumpy, while Jessa frowned deeply.
“This family… they surely annoy me sometimes,” Jessa grumbled, only to rise to her feet. She unhesitatingly turned without looking back at Wild.
“Hey! Where are you going?”
Jessa waved dismissively. “There’s no need to hide your worries. It’s futile, since no matter how we try, they’d still be worried. Besides, it’s pouring rain outside.”
The corner of Wild’s mouth curved down as he watched Jessa prance away toward the front door. After a moment, he clenched his teeth and pushed his old bum up.
“Damn it!” he hissed, tugging at his suit as he followed them.
In the end, all of them stayed on the porch to wait for the couple instead of waiting inside. Waiting outside and inside didn’t make much of a difference, aside from the fact that they could feel the harsh wind and the little droplets of water it carried.
“Does she always stay out like this??” Charles exhaled, checking his wristwatch. “It’s already past dinner, and in this weather…”
“Penny is old enough, Dad,” Atlas casually commented. “Zoren is just being a little paranoid.”
Charles frowned. “If he was being paranoid, why are you here?”

Atlas simply shrugged and ignored his father. Well, wasn’t it obvious? Because Zoren was being paranoid, he was starting to get worried as well.
“Penny is usually home at this time,” Hugo mumbled, checking his watch. After a moment, he decided, “I’ll go out and check.”
“Hugo, the weather is bad,” Allison remarked. “We’re already worried about your sister. We can’t be worried about you too.”
Hugo smiled. “I’m fine, Mom. I’ll just check.”
“No, stay here,” Charles shook his head. “I’ll go and check on your sister and her husband.”
“Dad, you can’t,” Atlas remarked.
“Why can’t I?”
“You’re old,” was all Atlas said, not caring if that comment might come across the wrong way. “I’ll go with Hugo.”
“I’ll come too!” Slater raised a hand. “The three of us can go!”
Atlas cast Slater a glance, and surprisingly, he nodded. “I’ll get the car.”
“Wait,” Haines called just as Atlas, Hugo, and Slater were about to leave. “I think… they’re here.”
As soon as those words escaped Haines’s lips, everyone turned toward the gates in the distance. The rain made everything darker and more blurry, but the light coming from the incoming car made it even more noticeable.
Allison and Jessa stretched their necks, noticing that it wasn’t just one car, but a few were lining up at the entrance of the residence.
“That’s them for sure.” Wild cleared his throat. “That entourage says it all.”
If it was just a car, they would most likely doubt it was Zoren. After all, Zoren often had escort cars with him. Even when he left, a few other cars followed him. Considering Penny also had a group of bodyguards that would go with her anywhere, the cars coming in were a giveaway that this was them.
“That little brat…” Wild cracked his fist as he grumbled, remembering what sort of situation Penny had put him in again. “Even if she cries a river, she better have a good explanation for this.”
Soon, the cars arrived in front of the residence where the family was standing. Much to their surprise, just when they thought a bodyguard would come out to prepare an umbrella for Zoren and Penny, there were countless of them.
All of them were holding umbrellas, creating a straight parallel line as a pathway.
“What is going on…?” Allison trailed off, watching someone open the backseat door of the car. “Penny?”
Their eyes went wide the moment they saw Zoren coming out. He was drenched from head to toe, and in his arms was his wife, who, just like him, was drenched from head to toe. The only difference was that Zoren was awake, while Penny seemed unconscious.
“Penny!” Without caring about anything else, Allison rushed to meet Zoren halfway. When her eyes fell on Penny, she saw that her daughter’s cheeks were red. “What happened?”
She didn’t even wait for Zoren to answer as she reached for Penny, touching her forehead. “She’s burning up,” she remarked as she met Zoren’s eyes. “Let’s get inside first.”
Zoren simply nodded, and with that, he carried his wife inside while the rest of the family could only wonder: what happened?
