Chapter 999: Break free from the shackles of his mind.
Allison held her daughter as tightly and steadily as she could, hoping this would at least keep Penny together temporarily. They hadn’t heard anything from the group of medical professionals, but Penny was a medical professional herself. Even if Penny weren’t, what Allison had witnessed was concerning.
No one would just cough up blood the way Zoren had.
Penny clasped Allison’s back, her face crumpling. As she kept her gaze on the bed, Allison noticed the people at the door. Lifting her eyes, Allison almost broke down the moment she locked eyes with Charles’s dilated pupils.
Charles studied his wife’s expression briefly before shifting his eyes to his daughter’s back. Seeing Penny’s side profile was enough for him to understand why Allison was trying to keep it together, despite looking like she would also break down.
With Charles now there, he was able to take his daughter and wife out of there.

The family stood in the mezzanine in silence, with Charles holding on to the railing, eyes on the first floor. Haines was leaning next to him, his eyes on Penny. As for Penny, she was leaning against the wall, her arms crossed, eyes cast down. The rest were scattered, but still around the same area.
‘What happened?’ was everyone’s question, but with Penny in this state, how could they ask?
Atlas, who was casually seated in the wing chair in the corner, kept his naturally sharp eyes on his sister. There wasn’t much change compared to his usual expression, but his gaze never left her. It was the same for Hugo and Slater.
Slater pressed his lips tightly, unable to hide them quivering. A thin layer of tears coated his eyes, and he wiped them with his arm, as he wasn’t used to seeing Penny in such a state. He would rather have her purposely ignoring him or telling him a bunch of nonsense than to see her like this.
All of them felt like it was just a matter of minutes before their family’s fate would be decided. Once the doctor from that room came out and delivered terrible news, it would be the end for them. Why for all of them? Because Penny was the glue holding this family together, and if she fell apart, it would never be the same.
So, even when they wanted to say something, they kept their mouths shut.
They waited in silence, listening to every tick of the clock and every breath they took.
Then they heard the door open.
All of them intuitively turned their heads as Penny rushed to the doctor. “How’s he?” she asked hurriedly. “Let me see his bloodwork.”
“Penny,” Charles called as he and the rest of his family approached. When he stopped, he gazed at her sternly. This was the first time he had to impose authority on his daughter because he had always thought his daughter and wife were the law. But this situation was different, and he had to keep her on the right track.
Penny pursed her lips, took a step back, and nodded. She snapped her eyes back to the doctor and sighed.
“Is my husband okay?” she breathed out. “What happened to him?”
The doctor studied Penny’s reaction, a little distracted by her response. After all, he was one of the people who had been there when Zoren completely lost his eyesight. He was there when Penny slapped them with her license. So, he was aware of who she was and where she stood in the medical field. He was surprised by how distraught Penny seemed. But then again, this was why doctors couldn’t treat their own families.
Doctors are also human, and just like everyone else, they sometimes get overwhelmed with emotions.
“Is Zoren going to be fine?” Allison’s question snapped the doctor back from his thoughts. “He was having a heavy nosebleed and then he coughed up—threw up blood.”
The entire family waited with bated breath, hoping the news would be good. However, a part of them couldn’t deny that they might not be prepared for the answer at all. Only when the doctor smiled reassuringly did they feel a faint wave of relief.
The doctor then turned his attention to Penny. “I just received his bloodwork, Young Madam. I’ll send it to you if you want to see it. However, what I can assure you is that you don’t have to worry. Although the first vital checks are alarming, after a thorough check and stabilizing his vitals, we got a clearer overview of the situation.”
“What happened?” Penny breathed out with a mix of relief and curiosity. “Why was he having a nosebleed and throwing up blood? Is he getting worse?”
“Our test shows that it’s partly because Mr. Pierson most likely ingested the blood from his nose that he threw it up. But as we tested further, we also found that some of the blood he coughed up was the remaining dead tissue in his lungs.”
“What does that mean?” Atlas blurted out.
“It means that he just coughed up the bad toxins that were polluting his internal organs.” The doctor smiled at him. “Mr. Pierson has had a lot of complications in the past, but this shows that his internal organs are healing and cleaning themselves from any type of poison in his body. It sounds scary, and the experience can be overwhelming, but it isn’t that bad.”
He paused, shifting his eyes back to Penny. “You understand, don’t you, Young Madam?” His eyes softened as he felt somewhat emotional as he finally said these words, which he thought he would never utter: “He’s not getting worse, Young Madam. He is… healing.”
Everyone exhaled heavily, with Allison losing her strength in her knees. If not for Hugo catching her, she would’ve fallen to her knees. Slater closed his eyes and breathed out, patting his chest.
Thank God.

Penny, on the other hand, couldn’t stop her tears from falling down her cheeks.
“I should’ve known…” she whispered, only for the doctor to shake his head.
The doctor reached out and clasped her shoulder. “You would’ve done more than enough, Young Madam. It’s all thanks to you and your treatment routine that Mr. Pierson is getting better than he ever did. So, please, do not worry and say those things anymore.”
Penny and the doctor nodded at each other, both equally relieved. Although Penny’s relief was given as she was the wife, the doctor was glad that Zoren was very close to reaching a full recovery. All of Zoren’s doctors had been on the brink of losing all hope, but now they weren’t just hopeful—they were certain that Zoren might finally break free from the shackles of his mind.
