Chapter 417: What’s that?
What had once been a great city was now but a shell of its former self.
The massive skyscrapers were toppled, laying shattered on the ground underneath countless shards of glass, dust, debris and all other sorts of complete and total destruction.
The Red Demon race had not been kind to the human race, even in death they weren’t kind to them.
They bombed their cities down until every last building was turned into nothing but a pile of rubble, and to rub some salt into the wound, they built their own camps on top of them as a way to establish some sort of dominance over the human race.
Like they were completely claiming the planet as their own by replacing each and every single sign that humans once lived there.
Groups of Red Demons stood in clusters in one such city, with its name now erased from history, clinking crude, bloodstained goblets together in grotesque mockery of a human celebration.
Others crouched around their grisly spoils, devouring the remains of the fallen federation soldiers, and even the normal, unawakened citizens with sickening enthusiasm.
A few more organised groups were already setting up displays of their latest trophies — tattered human uniforms and shattered weapons — to serve as reminders of their successful conquest.
“Tonight, we celebrate!”
The leader roared after having finished devouring the last bit of meat left from the commander of the Federal defence forces in the Telorn system.
“No more humans left to scurry about in the shadows! No more pitiful resistance!”
The demons around him cheered even louder, their voices rising in a chaotic crescendo.
A few began chanting his name, while others stomped their feet rhythmically in unison.
“To the great Conqueror Threshal!”
The same sultry, feminine voice purred, and the slender, red skinned demoness stepped forward with her eyes trained on the leader at all times, practically overflowing with lust.
“The one who brought this system to its knees!”
Threshal acknowledged the praise with a slight nod, his grin widening as he envisioned the ‘fun’ he would have after the celebrations were over.
“Enough flattery.”
Threshal rumbled, though his tone was more pleased than dismissive.
“Tonight is not just about my victory. It’s about our victory! We have purged this system of its humanity, and soon, we’ll move on to the next. And the next. Until every last human is purged from existence and this galaxy crumbles beneath our feet!”
Another round of enthusiastic cheers rumbled, and Threshal basked in the fervour of his troop’s response, swelling his chest with pride and satisfaction.
He was on the verge of raising his goblet in proposing another toast when something caught his attention — a subtle shift in the air, a faint ripple of energy that seemed… out of place.
He frowned, sharpening his gaze as he scanned the sky above the treeline in the distance.
For a moment, everything seemed normal — the bright sky was clear, dotted with the odd cloud or two.
But then…
“What’s that?”
He grumbled, muttering out in slight confusion and interest.
“Death.”
However, the voice that answered him was one that he didn’t recognise, and it was one that made his skin crawl.
It came from a human.

From right behind him.
How could a human get so close to him without alerting the entire camp!?
What was going on?
Was he imagining things?
However, before he had the chance to turn around and confirm whether he was hallucinating that voice or not, he felt a sharp pain in his neck, and then… nothing.
Nothing at all…

Watching from the skies, Alex couldn’t help but feel his heart tighten as he watched the scene of the Red Demons celebrating unfold before him.
He felt sickened by what he saw, especially the ‘kebabs’ in their hands…
He told Mira he was just going to take a quick leap through the canopy to get a view of the Red Demon camp from above. After all, sensing it with his spatial perception and actually seeing it with his own eyes were two completely different things.
Alex almost prayed that his perception had tricked him, and that it was actually humans in the camp, but as with most wishes, it remained unfulfilled…
He’d seen enough.
He took a deep breath, centering himself, and then let the world fall away.
He may have told Mira that he was only going to be doing some slight recon, but what he saw had just riled him up too much to not take immediate action.
With a thought, the familiar sensation of teleportation washed over him.
Space warped and folded around him, and the distance between him and the camp almost instantaneously shrunk to nothing.
The chaos and the laughter of the camp now rang out clearly in his ears as he appeared… right behind Threshal.
“What’s that?”
Alex heard the Red Demon utter some words, for some reason using the federal language, allowing him to understand clearly what he was asking.
“Death.”
He spoke out clearly, not giving the Red Demon any time to react to his response that would send every middle school kid with 8th grade syndrome through the roof in happiness.
Threshal’s body stiffened as Alex’s sword passed through his neck, almost like some sort of instinctive self defence mechanism had activated, but whatever it was, it was useless in the face of Virtue’s Edge.
Almost like time had to catch up to Alex’s actions, a few moments passed before a dark fountain of blood started gushing from Threshal’s now headless body.
Then, like a collapsing monument, it toppled forward, crashing heavily into the dirt.
Everything happened in the span of less than a second.
One moment, the camp was filled with laughter and celebration.
The next, their leader was dead, and it seemed they hadn’t even realised it yet.
Screechhh!
…until the feminine voice from earlier let out an ear piercing screech, digging into every Red Demon who was present and producing quite a few unhappy reactions from them.
But their expressions quickly mimicked her horror when they saw their leader laying in the dirt, head rolling away slowly…
