Chapter 421: Impressive
The dense forest stretched on endlessly, but Alex and Mira moved through it effortlessly.
As they advanced, the quiet hum of nature provided an odd contrast to the devastation they, or rather Alex, had left behind.
Alex, despite his earlier slaughter fest, seemed remarkably relaxed with his hands loosely gripping Virtue’s Edge’s handle.
Beside him, Mira was more focused, as she was the only one who could sense the drone’s movements, if it were to be sent back up again.
Her lips were curved into a smug smile, still revelling in the fact that she had sensed something that Alex couldn’t.
“Are you sure we’re heading in the right direction?” Alex asked, glancing at Mira out of the corner of his eyes.
But of course, since Alex couldn’t sense it himself, he was still rather sceptical about the whole thing.
What if it was a decoy?
What if it was bait?
What if it was just nothing, and Mira had somehow been deceived by her own ability?
“Of course.”
Mira replied, rolling her eyes at Alex.
“The drone headed this way. I’m betting its pilot is either at a nearby outpost or headed back to base. Either way, we’ll be right on their trail.”
Alex shrugged, indifferent.
“Good. Maybe this time you’ll actually get to do something.”
Mira shot him a glare, still holding a slight grudge.
“I’m not letting you hog the next battle, that’s for sure! Hmph!”
As they continued, the forest began to thin out, revealing a wide, barren expanse up ahead.
The familiar feeling of Red Demon presence started to tingle faintly on the edge of Mira’s perception, and upon seeing her reaction, Alex activated his own to get a better look of what was up ahead.
It was weaker than before, likely a smaller outpost, but there was no mistaking it.
“There.” Mira said, pointing toward a cluster of ruined buildings on the horizon, barely visible through the fading treeline.
Alex flicked his eyes toward the distant structures, and felt a surge of energy rise within him.
“Let’s make this quick.”
Mira could tell that he was getting angry again just by looking at him, but she smirked in contrast.
“I’ll be the one to make it quick this time.”
They picked up their pace, closing the distance between the forest and the outpost in a matter of a minute.
As they approached, Alec could feel the faint pulse of Red Demon life signatures.
It wasn’t a massive force — nothing like the camp they’d just decimated — but enough to make things interesting.
They soon neared the outskirts of the ruined buildings, and Mira suddenly paused, narrowing her eyes as her senses tingled.
“They know we’re coming.”

She grimaced.
Alex raised an eyebrow.
“How?”
Mira tapped her temple.
“Another drone. This time they’re being more cautious. It’s already returned to the outpost.”
Alex tightened his grip around Virtue’s Edge, fumes of fury practically gushing out of every pore in his body.
“Then let’s not waste more time.”
Without another word, the two of them burst forward, blurring into motion as they darted through the crumbling remains of what was once a human settlement, now overtaken by the Red Demons.
As they reached the edge of the outpost, the faint glow of Red Demon eyes could be seen peeking through the cracks of broken windows and shattered walls.
Mira’s eyes gleamed with both excitement and frustration.
She was frustrated at the fact that there were still some remains of the Red Demon’s feast, and they were most definitely not eating animals…
But she was excited at the fact that she would finally be able to join in on the action that she had missed out on earlier due to Alex’s impatience!
“Finally!”
With a motion quicker than the Red Demons could react to, she unleashed a wave of spatial energy, distorting the air around her as she stepped forward.
The ground beneath her cracked, and the very space around her seemed to ripple and warp.
The nearest building, where several Red Demons had been hiding in wait and watching their every movement up until that point, was caught in the distortion and started to crumble under the pressure of the very space they occupied.
“Where the fuck did you learn this trick from!?”
Alex was absolutely slack jawed when he saw this scene unfold before him.
He had never expected Mira to put on even more of a show than he had with the first base camp he had taken down.
He thought his Phoenix Flames were already showy enough, but Mira had just gone and one upped him.
But he had to keep up the façade of being nonchalant as he didn’t want to embarrass himself in front of Mira once again.
“Not bad.”
He said, in quite a casual tone.
“Not done yet.”
Mira replied even more casually, with the utmost confidence in her voice.
The structures that were buckling under the weight and stress that Mira was causing them with her spatial element.
Booom!
And soon enough, they started coming down one by one.
They were already in ruins before they had arrived, but now they were completely turned to dust.
However, from the shadows of the remaining structures, more Red Demons emerged, filling the air with their snarls and growls and curses in their own mother tongue as they charged toward the intruders.
‘Once again this is weird, why aren’t they as scared as they should be when facing off someone way stronger than themselves?’
Now that he was watching from the side lines, relatively calmer than the previous time they had attacked a Red Demon camp, Alex had more room to think.
And he found the Red Demon’s lack of fear quite interesting, but weird.
It was a commonly accepted idea that fear was something ingrained into every living being, but what he was seeing right now before his eyes clearly went against that principle.
But while he was busy thinking, Mira vanished from her spot, reappearing amidst the horde of Red Demons that had gathered in the few seconds that had passed since the destruction.
