Chapter 427: The memory
Alex remained trapped in the strange, murky warmth of the egg. The thick, gelatinous substance around him made it hard to process what he was experiencing.
He still couldn’t move, still couldn’t break free. His mind, fractured by grief and anger, struggled to comprehend his new reality. For now, he could only observe, powerless.
As nothing but a spectator to this memory fragment, he felt like a prisoner in his own mind at his inability to do anything.
From inside the egg, the world outside was a shadowy blur. He felt the ground tremble beneath him again, signalling the approach of something massive.
The silhouette from earlier became clearer, though the egg’s shell distorted the figure, blurring its features.
The shape of the creature was enormous, towering above him even in this cocoon-like state.
Its wings were folded in close to its body, and long, serpentine limbs stretched out of view. There was no mistaking the creature’s grandeur. It was a dragon — just like the ones from fantasy tales, but this was no fantasy…
A loud cracking noise filled the air, and Alex’s perspective shifted as the egg shook violently. It was happening. The shell was breaking, and the light of the outside world grew brighter, piercing through the thin cracks that splintered across the surface.
Crack!
Another tremor rang out through the egg, and Alex could feel it — the instinct to break free.
A primal urge to claw his way out took over his thoughts, overpowering his grief for a moment.
The cracks spread further, until finally…
Shatter!
The egg burst open, and Alex felt an overwhelming rush of cool air hit his body. For the first time, his perspective was no longer limited to the confines of the egg. His vision adjusted, and he was no longer a mere spectator to the memory. He was inside the body of the creature emerging from the egg — a hatchling.
His small, scaled body wobbled as it emerged from the remains of the egg, covered in the sticky goo that had sustained him. His legs were unsteady, and his claws dug into the cave floor, scraping against the stone in a series of soft, screeching noises.
He could feel everything — the roughness of the ground, the cool air, the slight weight of his newly formed body. It was all real, more real than he ever thought a memory could be.
His senses were overwhelmed by the immensity of the cave that stretched before him. The walls glistened like the inside of a geode, reflecting the soft golden light that illuminated the cavern. Stalactites hung from the ceiling like ancient fangs, and the floor beneath him was littered with the remains of other eggshells. This place had seen countless hatchlings before him.
But what truly captured his attention was the creature standing before him, no longer a silhouette through an egg shell.
A dragon.
It was breathtakingly beautiful, with scales that shimmered like molten silver, catching the light in a way that made the creature seem almost celestial. Its massive wings were folded gracefully behind it, and its piercing golden eyes glowed with an ancient, sorrowful wisdom. Each of its movements was deliberate and regal, commanding awe with its presence alone.
For a long moment, the dragon stared down at the tiny hatchling Alex had become. Its gaze was sharp, but there was something more—an undeniable sadness that lingered in the creature’s eyes.
The massive beast lowered its head, bringing its face closer to Alex’s tiny form. The sheer size difference was staggering; the dragon could have crushed him with a single breath, yet it moved with a surprising gentleness.
Then, the dragon spoke in a deep and resonant voice, filled with an ancient authority.
“So small…”
It murmured, vibrating the air, walls and everything else inside the cave with how deep it was.
“And yet, you carry the blood of Evermoor.”
Alex — or rather the hatchling — blinked, the hatchling’s instincts warring with his human consciousness. This memory, this reality he had been thrust into, was becoming clearer with every passing second. The King of Evermoor… this was his past. His beginning.
It made sense since it was his remnant soul that had brought him here, but Alex wasn’t really in the state of mind to be questioning stuff like this.
But the dragon’s voice carried a heavy sorrow.
“It is pitiful.”

The dragon continued with heavy words.
“That one born of this realm should be so tainted.”
The enormous creature sighed, letting a warm breath out against Alex’s tiny form.
“You are not pure.”
The dragon said softly, almost as though it were speaking to itself rather than the hatchling.
“A product of mixed blood, a betrayal to the lineage of the High Dragons. You should have been born to thrive in the higher realms, with wings spread wide to soar among the stars…”
The dragon’s voice trailed off in nostalgia, filled with some regret.
“But instead, you must be sent away.”
The words struck Alex like a blow, though the hatchling’s mind struggled to comprehend their full meaning.
Sent away?
The dragon’s sorrow deepened as it spoke, narrowing its golden eyes slightly as though recalling an ancient pain.
“You are not a purebred dragon of Evermoor. Your blood is tainted with the essence of a lower realm. The High Council would never allow one such as you to remain in the higher realms.”
There was a long pause, and Alex could feel the tension that was beginning to build even as a spectator.
The dragon stood taller, speaking in a more commanding tone now, losing its gentleness.
“For your own survival, I cast you down!”
The dragon glanced down at him one last time, unfurling its massive wings slightly.
“Farewell, young one. Your journey begins now. One day if you become strong enough, you may be able to join us again in the higher realms…”
And with that, the cave began to shimmer as the memory began to fall apart.
A golden light spread out, and glowed brighter and brighter until it consumed everything.
