Chapter 428: Phoenix Rebirth
Alex’s consciousness was once again pulled away, his mind spinning as the King of Evermoor’s exile faded into obscurity.
But despite everything that was currently happening to him, the experiences of this memory stuck with him.
***
The golden light faded, and Alex felt his consciousness pulling back from the memory. His mind was reeling, struggling to reconcile what he had just witnessed.
The hatchling, the exile, the ancient dragon… it all swirled in his head, but the moment his senses returned to reality, all of those thoughts were violently pushed aside.
Mira…
His eyes snapped open, and the cold void of space welcomed him once more.
The first thing he did was look down, heart pounding with an intense dread. Mira’s lifeless body still rested in his arms, her skin pale, cracked like porcelain, just as before. Nothing had changed.
Or had it?
His chest tightened.
He needed to know — had anything happened to her while he was trapped in that memory?
The mere thought of it sent a surge of panic through him.
He couldn’t forgive himself if something happened.
But just as he was about to reach for her, a soft chime rang in his ears.
A system notification appeared before his eyes, surprising him dearly
[Hidden ability [Phoenix Rebirth] activated.]
The words hung in front of him for a few moments before disappearing.
Alex couldn’t fully process what he was seeing though.
Phoenix Rebirth?
His mind raced, a feeling of deja vu starting to show itself within him.
‘Why does that sound familiar?’
He tried to remember what the System had said earlier before he was whisked away to the memory, but before he could connect the dots, something extraordinary started happening.
Without warning, Alex felt a sudden surge of power well up inside him. It was immense, overwhelming, as though the energy within him was trying to break free. His hands trembled, and the familiar crimson glow that had once radiated from his core began to pulse once again. But this time, it was different—stronger, purer, more focused.
And then, against his will, that energy began to seep out of him.
It wasn’t like before, when he had unleashed his fury in that raw explosion of power.
This was precise, controlled, but he wasn’t the one in control…
The crimson energy left him in torrents, streaming directly into Mira’s lifeless body through his hands.
He tried to lift them off of her, but it was like they were clamped down, and no matter how hard he tried, his own hands just didn’t listen to him.
It flowed like a river of molten light, saturating every inch of her being.
Her pale, cracked skin absorbed the energy eagerly, glowing faintly as the power infused her.

Alex’s breath caught in his throat.
He tried to pull back, to stop whatever was happening, but his body refused to obey. He couldn’t intervene, couldn’t control the flow of energy. It just kept pouring into Mira, never-ending, as if it was bound by the system itself.
Time felt meaningless as the energy transfer continued, stretching on for what felt like hours, though it was likely only minutes. Alex watched helplessly, his emotions in turmoil. He didn’t know whether this was helping or hurting her—was this energy healing her, or was it something more sinister?
But the longer it went on, the more he realised that Mira’s body was changing. The cracks in her porcelain skin began to seal themselves, slowly knitting back together. Her deathly pale complexion regained colour, a soft flush of life returning to her cheeks. Her limbs, once limp and frail, seemed to grow stronger, rejuvenating before his very eyes.
It was a miraculous, impossible sight.
But it was real.
When the energy finally stopped, Mira lay there, no longer the withered, broken figure she had been in death. Instead, she looked just as she had in life—beautiful, vibrant, her deep jet black hair shining in the dim light of the void. It was as if she had never been touched by death at all.
Alex was speechless. His hands hovered over her, hesitant, unsure if what he was seeing was real or some cruel illusion. He could barely comprehend what had just happened. Mira had died—he had felt her die—and yet, here she was, whole again.
He swallowed hard, his mind reeling.
‘What is happening…?’
He wondered with his thoughts in a jumbled mess of confusion and disbelief.
His instincts screamed at him to do something, to check on her, to see if she was truly dead, but a part of him was paralysed by fear.
Fear that this was a dream, that if he reached out, she would disappear.
But as his heart raced, he forced himself to move.
His trembling hand gently brushed against her cheek, warm to the touch.
“Mira…?”
His voice was barely a whisper, but he realised quickly that even if she were somehow alive, she wouldn’t be able to hear him.
He was in space after all, where no sound could travel…
But Mira didn’t stir.
She remained motionless.
But for a moment, he realised.
What if Mira’s body was trying to come back to life, but something was stopping her from doing so…?
What if—
“Shit!”
Alex came to the sudden realisation instantly, and he pounced onto Mira’s face without a lick of hesitation.
Air!
That was what she was missing!
Even for him, before becoming a higher life form, he would still be subjected to the rules of the mortal world.
It’s just that he and Mira could survive for very long periods without it.
But what about now, in this current moment, where Mira’s body had seemingly just come back from the dead?
There was no air for her to kickstart her heart.
There was little energy left in her even after her rejuvenation, as almost all of it had been used up bringing her back to her current state.
Hence, Alex pressed his lips onto her warm lips and forced the last bits of air he had in his lungs into hers.
‘Come on…. Come on!’
The process only took a moment, and he watched anxiously and impatiently for something to happen.
And then…
