Chapter 440: Donald
“Where did you hear of those names?”
The Red Demon on the other end of the call looked incredibly stern as he asked this question to Donald.
“I didn’t just hear about them, I spoke to them myself.”
Donald replied haphazardly, making sure that there was nobody nearby who could hear him.
If he found out that anyone was, then…
Let’s just say they wouldn’t be around anymore.
Unless it were another S tier, or a powerful A tier who could escape his grasp faster than he could kill them.
Then he would be in some serious trouble.
He glanced around cautiously and scanned his surroundings with whatever senses an S tier like him had on offer, and made sure things were secure before continuing the conversation.
However, on the other end of the call, the Red Demon’s eyes had constricted to a thin line and he looked at Donald in a mixture of shock and anxiety.
‘The Collective… the Overseers… made contact with the humans? But for what purpose??? Could it be…’
All sorts of wild ideas ran through his head, running through all the possible reasons for why they could be there.
Some were closer to the truth than he would have liked to have found out…
“What do you mean by that? They visited you?”
Donald nodded.
“They came directly to us out of the blue — appeared out of nowhere in their absolutely enormous ship. They bypassed all our defences and teleported directly into our most secure room to confront us face to face. Even that old fart Farnes looked scared in their presence!”
Donald felt like he could talk for hours upon end about his short encounter with the Overseers, but he was pressed for time so he kept it short.
“And, you didn’t answer my question! What do they want!?”
The Red Demon on the other side became more and more agitated as time went on though, as if even a short explanation by Donald was too much.
“I was getting to that! They came to us with an offer—”
Smash!
Donald heard something smash on the other side once again, and paused his speech to take a look.
“Continue.”
But the Red Demon ushered him on.
“Ahem! As I was saying, they came to us with an offer… but it wasn’t for us. It was for one of our prodigies… They wanted him to join them.”
The Red Demon’s face twisted into even more disbelief, twisting his deep crimson eyes into even sharper slits.
If one wasn’t paying attention, they wouldn’t realise he had irises at all!
He couldn’t fathom what he was hearing.
“A human prodigy?”
He hissed with incredulity.

“You mean to tell me the Collective came to recruit a human… Wait! What was the deal they made then!?”
Donald’s lips curled into a thin, tight smile.
But it wasn’t a smile of ‘yeah that’s right, don’t look down on us humans!’
It was more a smile of ‘Fuck, this is going to be awkward…’
The Red Demon on the other side of the projection was visibly agitated by Donald’s smile.
His clawed fingers drummed on the surface of his chair with mounting frustration.
“Well that’s where things get a little complicated…”
Donald began his explanation, chuckling to himself as he tried to laugh away the awkwardness.
“They didn’t just offer him something small. It wasn’t just a bribe or a quick exchange. They offered to recruit him, and I mean REALLY recruit him. They even said he had potential or something like that…”
Donald kept rambling on about what happened in detail, and the Red Demon just kept getting more and more frustrated and even afraid the more he heard.
“… and in the end, they even said they’d end the conflict between our two races if he accepted it! Can you believe that? Such audacity, tsk.”
This time the Red Demon froze.
‘End the war…?’
Donald could see by his reaction that this came as an absolute shock to him.
“Yeah, no more bloodshed, no more fighting. The Overseers said they’d handle the Red Demons, everything. All Alex had to do was join them.”
The Red Demon’s face twisted into a snarl, and the faint sounds of something cracking could be heard on his end of the call.
His temper was barely contained.
“I need to get out of this place then…”
He moved to turn the projection off and make his escape before things were too late for him.
“Wait!”
But Donald stopped him before he could do so.
“You didn’t let me finish my retelling of events!”
‘…’
“Do you think I give a damn about your story!? Motherfu— Ahem, I’m in imminent danger and you wish to continue talking like a normal Sunday afternoon? You’re lucky I need to escape or I’d come and strangle the life out of you!”
The Red Demon exploded at Donald in a rage and chastised him for all the reasons he could think of.
“Danger? But the kid didn’t even take their deal. Haha, you should have seen the looks on the other’s faces. It was priceless!”
The Red Demon’s furious expression froze for a moment as Donald’s words sunk in.
“What… did you just say?”
His voice was now dangerously quiet, like it had been squeezed out of him.
Donald grinned again, this time out of amusement.
“Yeah, that’s right. The Kid — Alex — turned them down. Can you believe it? The Overseers, with all their grandeur, offering him peace on a golden platter… and he just said, ‘Hell no!'”
The Red Demon’s claws scraped across the surface of his chair, leaving deep gouges.
His breath came out in sharp hisses, and the glow in his eyes intensified.
The very idea that a human, a mere C tier, had the audacity to reject the Overseer’s offer — it was unfathomable!
“You’re lying.”
Which is exactly why he called Donald out on his bluff.
Or so he thought…
“No, I’m being dead serious. I’m sure news of it will reach you through your own channels soon enough.”
Donald shook his head and casually leaned against the wall of his dimly lit room.
