Chapter 481: Change of plans
Corax staggered backward, clutching to his side where Mira had cut him deeply.
His face was twisted in agony and disbelief. Blood seeped through his fingers, pooling on the ground as he tried to steady himself — but his body was weakening, and fast.
Panic flashed across his eyes as he realised that he was dying, and very quickly.
But Mira didn’t let him fall.
She advanced, with her sword glinting in the same eerie silver light as she prepared to finish him off.
‘Looks like she’s gotten an even better grasp of the space element…’ Alex thought to himself, recognising just what exactly the silver light surrounding her blade was.
Even Alex, who watched from the side, could feel its potency.
‘That thing could damage even me…’
He felt surprised beyond belief — had Mira finally caught up to him?
‘No, she still has a ways to go before reaching my level. But she has shown drastic improvements from before…’
Corax’s breath came in ragged gasps, and with what little shred of strength he had left, he managed to spit out a desperate taunt.
“You… you think… you can keep… this up? More will come for you… stronger than me… stronger than—”
Mira interrupted him with a demeaning laugh, leaning in close enough that he could feel her steady breaths push against his face.
“Oh, Corax,” she murmured. “That’s what they all say!”
And with that, she plunged her blade into his chest, silencing him forever.
Corax’s body went limp, not even able to let out a final whisper as his last breath left him.
Mira withdrew her blade, wiping it clean with a flick of her wrist before turning back to Alex.
Alex approached her, his expression unreadable as he stepped forward, glancing at Corax’s lifeless body, then shifting his gaze to look at Vira.
Her movements had gradually started to slow down, and her skin became paler and paler as the minutes had ticked by.
It would only be a few more minutes before her life would be snubbed out completely.
As Vira’s pale form lay motionless on the ground, her last breaths finally came and faded, allowing her to join Corax and Garmis in death.
Alex and Mira shared a look of satisfaction with each other. They had dismantled the Iron Vultures with impressive ease and left their core members and compound in ruin.
But neither allowed the victory to swell into arrogance.
This was, after all, only one small faction in the vast underworld of the star system — a single gang of cosmic criminals among countless others.
Mira’s shoulders relaxed a little as she sheathed her blade, but her eyes still held a lingering tension.
“How much longer does this have to go on for…?”
She spoke, glancing around at the carnage they had caused.
“All this fighting, is it really necessary? We are in the middle of a war that threatens our very existence, yet here we are fighting in and amongst ourselves! It’s pathetic!”
Alex paused his thoughts and listened to Mira’s frustration.
She was right — they were fighting enemies both within and without, caught in an endless cycle that further pulled them into the depths of conflict, away from any kind of peace.

But he knew there was more to it than just chaos for chaos’ sake.
“I know.”
Alex replied, softening his tone more than usual.
This, all of it — it does feel like a waste. But our hands are tied. For reasons that may or may not be at the fault of my own decisions, we have targets on our backs because of these traitorous scum, who even have the audacity to call us ‘traitors!'”
Mira clenched her jaw, clearly unconvinced.
“There’s always someone else waiting to take their place. We can destroy a thousand gangs and still be no closer to eradicating the problem. What does it even change?”
“Maybe nothing.”
Alex admitted.
“But at least when we take out groups like the Iron Vultures, it’s one less threat we have to face. And more lives saved in the process.”
Mira sighed, shaking her head.
“But even if we somehow clear them out… it still doesn’t stop the war. The real threat still looms over our heads, and not even people at the level of Principal Farnes can stop it…”
Alex took a step closer.
“Perhaps you are right… The stronger we are, the more enemies we can take out, and frankly right now, because of the rules the System imposed, we gain nothing from fighting our own people. But the Red Demons…”
Mira knew what Alex was getting at, and she couldn’t help but nod along.
The knowledge that there were no soul cores to gain from killing one’s own race was already known by everybody by now, which only made things even more complicated…
Because these criminals still chose to go after their own people despite knowing this!
But to people like Alex, doing this was just wasting time, which was very limited for not only them but the entire human race at the moment.
“We should finish cleaning up the rest of the criminals on Setal for now, and while it pains my to say it, we have to abandon this mission to clear out the cosmic criminals. The Red Demons are a far greater and much more looming threat.”
Mira nodded along, happy that Alex agreed with her sentiment.
“They put a target on our backs, but that doesn’t mean we have to directly seek them out to kill them, when they will probably seek us out first for the bounty rewards! We can kill two birds with one stone.”
With that, the two of them set off from the Iron Vulture’s compound, no longer willing to waste any more time taunting or showing mercy to the lower ranked thugs of the gang.
There were still thousands of them roaming about the remains of the compound, scavenging for whatever loot was left.
But by the time Mira and Alex set off from the city, there were no Iron Vultures left…
