Chapter 482: Phoenix
Earth.
In a bustling restaurant by the beach in the Federation’s capital, a beautiful and lustrous city, a man in a business casual attire sat, basking in the warmth that the sun provided.
He drank a classy glass of wine as he watched the surrounding people go about their business.
Compared to a year ago, their faces were much more tense and the people tended to keep to themselves more, rather than stop to have a casual chat on the street with other friendly faces they recognised.
Of course, this was all due to the influence the invasion and subsisting war of the Red Demons had on them.
As citizens of Earth, the Federation’s capital, even the lowest Janitors held high status compared to the rest of the federation, so these people didn’t feel the direct effects of having their lives and homes threatened by the Red Demons, but after a year of constant conflict and bad news, there was a lingering feeling that this usual status quo might not remain this way for much longer…
For many people, they felt there would only be a few years before the Federation, and the Human race by extension, as a whole was wiped out.
‘Wow, the people of Earth are not so bad… At least by my standards they aren’t. Not to mention the food on this planet!’
The man in the casual business attire sipped his alcoholic wine with a satisfied look on his face.
“Is there something wrong with this guy!? He’s just sitting there so uninterested by the blaring sun!”
Of course, while everything seemed normal to the man himself, to others around him, he was quite the odd one out.
For instance, the restaurant he was currently enjoying his drink at had an indoor and outdoor section, and he was currently the sole person occupying the outdoor section…
“Doesn’t he find it hot…?”
“Isn’t he worried about getting skin cancer? Those UV rays are no joke!”
Smack!
“You idiot! Don’t you know cancer has been eradicated for hundreds of years already!?”
“He’s the only one sitting outside in this heat… It’s just passed noon, and the temperature has to be at least 45°C…”
“I bet he’s one of those Awakened… But weren’t they all conscripted to go fight in the war? What is he still doing here? Did he get special permission from the government or something?”
“Ever since the Primordial Expanse came about, all sorts of oddballs have appeared.”
Multiple people, both passing by and sitting in the cool, fresh air that the restaurant’s AC provided murmured to each other.
These were all normal, unawakened people.
Most of them were ignorant about the world of awakened as well, which is why they might not have realised that even any F- ranked utterly useless awakened could withstand such heat without even batting an eye, let alone sweating.
‘Hot?’
The man in question thought to himself as he looked up at the glaring sun in the sky.
‘Haha, compared to the stuff I’ve experienced this may as well be a cold plunge!’
His amusement quickly wore off.
‘Sigh… as an esteemed Envoy I’ve been sent to such a backwater civilisation… The only good things keeping me here are the food and the people! Well… those and the fact that I was ordered here…’
The business casual man shook his head.
‘I head this civilisation is in the middle of a war as well, but I’ve yet to see any sort of crime being committed, let alone something on the scale that could pique my interest… Sigh.’
It seemed like the man had a habit of sighing exaggeratedly…

‘Can’t some alien races come over for me to kill? I’m so damned bored!’
For people like this man, life gets boring when one has lived for so long.
What do you do when you’ve gone and done all there is to see and do in the universe…?
Immortality seems like everyone’s dream at first, but when one actually gets the chance to experience it for themselves for a couple eons, they realise that it isn’t actually all that good.
Beep!
Beep!
However, while the man delved deeper and deeper into his own thoughts to relieve his own boredom, a few ringing noises started to blare in his head.
‘Damn! Just as I was getting to the good part as well!’
The man pushed aside the memories of the delicious food he had eaten the previous day, and made way for answering the communication he was receiving.
‘The guys above rarely ever send me messages directly like this… I wonder what piqued their interest so much that it requires my attention?’
Just thinking about it made the man himself quite interested to read the communication.
[Phoenix, a civilisation of great interest has come to higher up’s attention. It also happens to be the civilisation they sent you to monitor all those centuries ago, interestingly enough they happen to be of the same race as you, I wonder if there is some sort of connection…?.
Anyway! The Overseers we sent have come back with news that not only have they produced one, but two potential talents!
Naturally, this news also came along with some caveats.
It appears that their civilisation is also under great threat by a neighbouring race that I hear has set its sights on wiping them out.
Considering this civilisation has managed to produce two talents of such level, I’m hereby increasing our monitoring of it, perhaps they can produce a few more…
Enough rambling on though, I’m sure you can gauge what I’m getting at with this message, but if not, let me cut it short for you: We do not want such unwanted interferences with our monitoring, so deal with it as you see fit. Just make sure it doesn’t crop up again sometime in the future.
Your good friend, Winter.]
‘…’
‘Well that wasn’t the message I was expecting. So this civilisation, the ‘Federation’ as they call themselves, managed to produce some saplings with potential huh? I wonder who they might be…’
