Chapter 487: Who?
The knocking continued.
Knock!
Knock!
Knock!
Each sound echoed through the silent ship, louder and more unnerving than the last.
Alex and Mira exchanged a tense glance, both of them on edge.
The void outside the airlock was supposed to be empty — just like the lifeless remnants of the Red Demon fleet.
And yet, something was there, even if their perception said otherwise.
Alex’s grip on Virtue’s Edge tightened, with the edges shimmering faintly with his aura around it.
“You still not picking anything up on the scans?”
Mira shook her head, with her own blade materialising out of thin air in her hand.
“Nothing… Whatever it is, it’s not registering in any way we can detect!”
The knocks came again, slower this time,
Knock…
Knock…
“Alright.”
Alex spoke, swallowing hard.
“We’re not going to get anywhere just sitting here. Let’s check it. Together.”
Mira looked hesitant but nodded along.
They advanced cautiously toward the airlock, their weapons ready.
As they approached, the ship’s internal cameras provided a grainy feed of the exterior, but it revealed nothing — no figure, no ship, just the vast emptiness of space.
It was as if whatever was out there didn’t exist at all!
But that wouldn’t explain where the knocking was coming from.
Alex pressed a command on the console, readying the airlock door for manual release.
“Whoever’s out there, they’re either insane… or something we’ve never encountered before.”
“I don’t know which is worse,” Mira muttered.
With a final glance at Mira, Alex tapped the control to open the airlock.
A hiss of pressurized air escaped as the reinforced door slid open slowly.
They both tensed, weapons aimed at the threshold.
And then they saw him.

A man – A human man, stood there, seemingly unaffected by the vacuum of space. His figure was cloaked in simple, unassuming attire — a dark coat fluttering slightly in the microcurrents of the artificial atmosphere escaping the airlock.
His features were sharp and defined, his expression calm, almost curious.
His jet-black hair had a slight sheen to it, and his piercing, golden eyes glimmered unnaturally against the backdrop of the stars.
Alex and Mira stared in stunned disbelief.
Whoever this man was, he was the last thing the two of them were expecting to see!
They were at least prepared to face a surviving Red Demon, or perhaps a survivor from the side that had caused this destruction the Red Demons had faced.
But not some guy looking like he was about to go to work in his 9-5 office!
“Who… who the hell are you?”
Alex finally managed to get some words out, his voice breaking the tension.
The man tilted his head slightly, studying them with an almost casual demeanour.
He seemed entirely unfazed by the weapons pointed at him.
“An appropriate question,” he replied, his voice smooth and calm, yet it carried an authority with it. “Though not the most pressing one, given the circumstances.”
“What do you mean, ‘circumstances’?”
Mira demanded, her weapon still aimed.
“What are you doing here? How are you even alive out there?”
Mira’s line of questioning was obvious.
He looked like a normal human, he dressed like one, and most importantly, he had no energy signature like one.
Everything pointed to him being just your average joe on his way to work.
But that clearly wasn’t the case.
Nothing in this situation made sense to them.
The man stepped forward, his movements fluid and deliberate.
Despite the unease he radiated, there was no overt hostility in his posture.
“I could ask you two the same.” He said.
“But I get the feeling I already know the answer. You two must be the two prodigies they were talking about, hmmm?”
He stroked his chin as he examined the two of them closely.
His eyes were so piercing that both of them felt naked under his gaze, like they couldn’t hide anything from him.
“Indeed, I must be right. I feel something powerful deep within the two of you that normally shouldn’t have cropped up in a backwater civilisation like this.”
‘What?’
‘Backwater civilisation? Is he talking about the Federation?’
The two of them felt their minds become jumbled trying to figure out what this guy’s deal was.
But they both kept their cool and stopped themselves from doing anything rash.
Something about the guy just didn’t seem right.
He had absolutely no energy signature, no presence that they could detect at all, yet he was right in front of them, tanking the effects of space like it was nothing.
He clearly wasn’t normal like his outwards appearance might have suggested.
“You two must be here to figure out what happened to the Red Demon fleet.”
Alex narrowed his eyes.
“You know what happened here?”
The main smiled faintly, though it didn’t quite reach his piercing eyes.
“Of course I do. I caused it.”
Both Alex and Mira froze.
“You’re lying.”
Mira said after a while with her voice trembling slightly.
The man shrugged, with his gaze shiting to the distant, lifeless command ship of the Red Demons.
“Believe what you will. But I have no reason to lie. You see it with your own eyes, don’t you? That is my work.”
Alex tightened his grip on Virtue’s Edge, though he knew it would likely be a useless endevour against this guy.
“Why? What are you? Some kind of hidden weapon of the Federation?”
The man chuckled softly with this question, a sound devoid of malice yet unnervingly cryptic.
“No. I am simply doing my job. The Red Demons have annoyed my highers, and so their time is over.”
His golden eyes met Alex’s, and for a moment, Alex felt as though the man could see right through him, as though his soul was laid bare under that piercing gaze.
“There’s something about you that i can’t quite put my finger on… Not even someone of my power can see through you… You’re one interesting kid. I can see why the higher ups are interested in you.”
