Chapter 488: You can call me Phoenix
Both Alex and Mira looked at the mysterious man with all sorts of apprehension.
On the one hand, he didn’t seem like he was an enemy, or from any unfriendly force of the federation whatsoever.
He actually seemed quite calm and chill considering Alex and Mira’s status as ‘criminals’ by those who had turned their backs on the Federation.
But at the same time, despite all this, this only raised their tensions even more.
He may not seem like an enemy… but he had basically just told them that he had taken out an entire solar system’s worth of Red Demons, and from their initial assessments, the disaster that swept over them was delivered all at once…
If what this man was saying were found to be true…
Alex didn’t know what to think.
As far as he knew, not even Principal Farnes was powerful enough to achieve something like this. At least not in the same manner and as quickly as this man did.
The silence between them gradually grew more and more awkward, at least for Mira and Alex, as Alex continued ruminating over his thoughts.
Mira looked more and more tense as the seconds passed, even starting to become tempted to nudge Alex to bring him back to reality.
The man’s demeanour remained disarming though, but it only heightened her suspicion.
Whoever he was, he didn’t belong to the Federation — not with his unexplainable power.
After a few more moments of silence passed, Alex spoke first in a low and measured voice.
“You’re saying you destroyed this fleet. Wiped out hundreds of thousands of Red Demons in one fell swoop. Just… because they annoyed your ‘highers’? Who are they? And who the hell are you?”
The man let out a soft chuckle at Alex’s question.
He spent all that time in silence, thinking to himself, just to ask a question a simple as that?
His golden eyes gleamed with an otherworldly light.
“Oh, you have so many questions. Understandable, I suppose. But I’m afraid most of the answers would be… wasted on you.”
His gaze shifted to Mira, his smile fading slightly as he studied her with unsettling intensity.
“And you… You’re more interesting than you let on too… A little less mysterious than your partner over there, perhaps, but still full of surprises. My, no wonder your little civilization has drawn so much attention from the highers!”
Mira’s heart pounded in her chest, but she refused to let her shock show.
‘Does he know?’
She started to become a little scared.
The man hinted at something inside her a ‘little’ less mysterious and powerful than Alex.
But Mira knew herself, and she knew the cause of this mysterious feeling he felt from Alex.
She knew for a fact that she had nothing of the sort that was able to match Alex’s Soulforge or other talents inside of her.
Maybe except for her Call of the Void, but even that was far below Alex’s talents.
The rank of the talent itself was enough evidence of this.
What could the man be referring to then…?
Mira didn’t know, and she suspected he had no intention of explaining any further either.

Putting this aside, Mira spoke.
“Stop dodging the question. Who are you, and why are you here?”
The man sighed, as if indulging a child’s persistence.
“If you must put a name to me… call me Phoenix. As for why I’m here —”
He gestured lazily to the lifeless fleet that surrounded them.
“You’re standing in the middle of my handiwork, like I’ve said numerous times already. I thought it only polite to greet the first witnesses, but it seems things were much more interesting than I first suspected.”
A sly smile crossed his face, as if the two of them looked nothing more than two cute little fledglings.
Well, in a way, this wasn’t wrong. From his perspective at least.
Compared to his tens of thousands of years of life, the two 18 year olds were practically still out of the womb in comparison.
This whole thing was amusing to him.
Even now, while he was in thought, they still tried to act tough and scary in front of him.
‘If only they knew the true extent of my power.’
Though, he suspected that Alex already had some clues towards that, which was perhaps the one thing out of this interaction that slightly surprised him.
Even though there was something ‘mysterious’ about that, as he put it, it wasn’t entirely surprising to him.
The universe was a huge place, filled to the brim with all sorts of civilizations of all sorts of races.
Finding some interesting talents was uncommon, but it wasn’t so rare that one would be shocked whenever they did so.
In fact, where he came from, there were youths that gave even more mysterious feelings, some of them even instilling a slight feeling of terror inside of him.
Compared to them, the feeling he got from those two was average.
‘Whatever, the higher ups told me to fix this problem for them. I’ve spent enough time here chit chatting with these two funny kids. I can’t leave a job unfinished…’
Suddenly, the man’s face cringed as he considered something that clearly upset him.
‘I don’t want my pay docked again…’
Before the two of them could even consider why the man’s expression had changed so suddenly, he suddenly said hurriedly, “Gotta go, it was nice chatting with you!”, before disappearing just as promptly.
Like that, the whole interaction was over.
‘He didn’t even answer my question properly…’
However, Alex had a feeling of emptiness in him…
He’d been left hanging.
His question had been dodged until the end, and the man had left before he could even push him even further…
‘Such a shame, I wanted to know more about him, especially about the type of place that could produce a man as powerful as him!’
Alex once again fell back into thought, which Mira would have been a little annoyed by, if she hadn’t just done the exact same thing…
‘From the way he spoke, he wasn’t even the strongest of his organisation either…’
