Chapter 492: I’m Not Satisfied
Meanwhile, back on Mars.
Alex and Mira looked at each other, a little bit dumbfounded.
“The war’s really over…” Mira murmured to herself.
That was right.
Although they were skeptical even after seeing all of the banners and victory celebrations, the reality of the situation had finally settled in for them, especially after their talk with Principal Farnes.
Even though the Federation was selling the public a fabricated truth, it didn’t change the fact that the Red Demon threat was in fact gone.
Like Mira said to Alex before, it didn’t matter who dealt the finishing blow, it only mattered that it was dealt.
However the implications of this were only now settling in for them.
… What were they supposed to do now?
For the last year or so, their whole life had been solely encompassed around fighting against the Red Demon race with all they had in hopes of giving the human race a chance to survive in the universe.
But now, out of nowhere, this purpose no longer existed…
To be honest, they felt a little bit empty.
They should have at least been given some time to process this! Instead it all happened in the blink of an eye.
‘I feel… like something is missing from my life now?’
Alex was stuck in his own thoughts as he and Mira sat on a vacant bench in the middle of a park.
To be honest, the whole situation felt strange for him.
It was too peaceful.
He had been so used to the constant fighting, death, and conflict that times where he could just sit back and relax just felt wrong.
If he wasn’t out there making an effort to increase his strength, he felt like he was wasting his time.
Even more so was that now that humanity’s main enemy had been defeated, he had no idea what to do now.
His whole life this past year revolved around killing and fighting for the sake of humanity — he had almost forgotten what motivated him to keep on striving forwards before all of this happened.
‘That’s right… Back then I just wanted to be strong. It was that simple. Well… that and the fact that I wanted to be strong enough that nobody could suppress me with their strength anymore. But I’m not so sure that’s a possibility now that my horizons have been broadened.’
Alex was right to have these thoughts.
Back then, he thought that just becoming an S tier was the peak. That it was the highest point one could reach and it was his sole goal for increasing his strength.
But then he found out about classifications, which just completely upturned his entire worldview.
There could be weak and strong S tiers now?
What the hell was that all about?
Not only that, but the difference between each classification was wider than even the difference between ranks!
Taking himself, for example.
He could deal with opponents above his own rank due to his higher classification.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Of couse, it wasn’t as simple as that in his case, but it was the basic gist of how things worked.
But he was still just a C tier, not even a higher life form yet.
The chasm probably widened even further the higher the ranks and classifications got…
Just the simple idea of a S+ rank Divine class being frightened him…
And that was even if S tier was the end… which Alex wasn’t so sure of anymore.
Especially after meeting Phoenix.
Despite his rapid progress over the last two years, this level of power still seemed so unobtaionable to him.
Forget people on Phoenix’s level.
Alex was confused at how Principal Farnes could reach his level in such a short time.
As an S+ rank King class, he was pretty high up the cosmic hierarchy, if Alex had to guess.
Yet he had achieved that in a little over a hundred years.
If it weren’t for the need to pass certain ‘tests’ before the System allowed him to rank up, Alex would have had the confidence to reach that level in far less time.
But thanks to the requirements he had for each rank, he doubted he could match Principal Farnes’ speed.
‘Now that I think about it, does he have some sort of overpowered talent like I do?’
‘Perhaps its related to how he was able to reach his current strength so quickly?’
Mira glanced over at Alex, noticing the distant look in his eyes.
She knew him well enough to know what was going through his head.
“You’re overthinking again.”
Alex blinked at her sudden breaking of the silence, snapping out of his daze.
“Am I?”
She smirked faintly.
“You’ve got that usual furrowed brow, thousand yard stare thing you do when you’re thinking too hard. You look constipated.”
Alex couldn’t help but chuckle hearing this.
“Thank’s for the vote of confidence.”
“I’m serious, though.”
Mira leaned back on the bench, gazing up at the sky.
“You’re doing that thing where you spiral. Worried about the future, about what’s next, about how strong you need to be. Trust me, I can tell. You aren’t the only one who has these thoughts.”
Alex just looked off into the distance in silence, soaking in her words.
After a few seconds passed, he turned back to her and spoke. “You’re right.”
Mira smiled and attempted to speak, but Alex continued.
“But I’m not satisfied yet.”
His face took on a more serious look after saying this.
“I won’t ever be satisfied… until I can confidently say that I am the strongest.”
Mira looked at him, a little confused. “The strongest what?”
“Everything.” Alex answered.
“I won’t stop searching for more strength. Even if I can crumble planets underneath my fist, whole star systems with just a flick, or even whole galaxies… I won’t stop searching.”
Mira cringed at his ‘Main character syndrome’ statement, but she quickly realised that perhaps… he had the potential to realise these ideas?
She had seen his talent after all.
[Congratulations.]
But Alex’s attention was drawn away from Mira by a sudden unexpected message.
From the System.
