Chapter 508: Panic
They were the smartest of the bunch, it seemed.
They could have been smarter though, as if they really had brains instead of brawns they would have taken the cold sweat covering Alex and the horrified look on his face, not to mention the fact he was still running despite the verbal abuse from that one no name prodigy from earlier, they would have joined him in his desperate retreat.
Despite all this though, the other bunch, 20 in total, started rushing into the crowd of aliens like they were bloodthirsty madmen.
‘Is something wrong with those guys?’
Mira thought to herself as she joined Alex in running.
She saw the fear on his face, and his desperate shout to her before the others had arrived, and she knew that they had found themselves in some deep shit.
If they were stupid enough to ignore all the blaring warning signs though, then they could blame no-one but themselves for what happened next.
The moment the first prodigy reached the aliens, he sent out what looked like a thundercloud, crackling with lightning as it ascended to the skies.
Boom!
Crash!
Crack!
A literal thunderstorm was created above the alien’s heads, and they looked up without any changes in facial expression at it.
Whether that was from them not even having the facial muscles to perform such a task, or just because they were that unbothered by the attack, was still to be determined.
But they didn’t have to wait long for an answer though.
BOOOOM!
The moment the first lightining bolt made contact with one of the ships below, it…
Did nothing.
There wasn’t even a single speck of damage to the ship, it looked just as intact as it ever did.
The prodigy who launched the attack frowned, but didn’t take it to mind.
‘Odd, but then again the same effect would happen if I launched my attack on one of the Federation’s stronger ships anyway.’
He chalked it down to just the ships being strong, and the aliens that built them having better technology and more engineering expertise.
With his mood slightly lifted, he looked back at the forefront of the now battlefield and…
BOOOOM!
Another lightning bolt came crashing down.
This time, it hit bullseye, striking one of the Aliens dead on.
Smoke covered the scene immediately after, as the bolt also made contact with the dirt and gravel underneath, kicking up all sorts of dust and debris.
‘Well, that was easy.’
The prodigy behind the attack thought to himself.
But his thoughts didn’t last for long.
Because he himself didn’t last any longer than that.

The smoke hadn’t even begun dissipating yet, but the prodigy was suddenly turned into a bloody mist, just like that.
There was no sound.
There was no warning.
Not even the other prodigies’ eyes registered what happened before their friend and companion was turned into nothing but red mist.
“What the fu-”
The first person to realise what had happened was one of the prodigies who retained neutral throughout the whole thing, as he was the farthest from at the back and could see exactly what transpired in front of him.
Well, he could only see the aftermath.
There, amongst the red mist that was once a fully fledged human prodigy, a dark silhouetted figure stood.
The mist secluded the figure’s real looks from everyone’s eyes, but they didn’t really need to know much more other than the fact it was definitely not human.
‘Wait, the alien that he struck with his lightning is gone…’
The dots started to connect in their minds, and they finally realised why Alex and Mira were so desperate to run away.
It wasn’t out of cowardice.
It was out of fear!
They must have known how horrifying the aliens were before they did!
‘Fuck I should have followed him!’
Some of the neutral parties nearer to the back started trying to make a run for it, turning around and attempting to catch up with Alex and Mira who were already very far off into the distance.
But how could they outrun the inevitable?
The scene erupted into chaos in mere moments. The remaining prodigies, who had until now stood in silence, stunned by what they had just witnessed, suddenly jolted into motion.
Some unleashed their talents and abilities in blind panic, with all sorts of elements being thrown around all at once, and cutting winds blasted towards the silhouetted figure through the dissipating red mist.
Others, those with a bit more sense, turned tail and ran, trying to follow the path Alex and Mira had taken.
But it was already too late.
All of the other aliens just stood in the same place they were in from the very beginning, watching their comrade with close inspection.
Before the first wave of abilities could even land, the figure moved once again.
Or at least, that’s what they thought had happened.
The problem was that no one actually saw the alien move. There was no blur of speed, no displacement of the air. It was as if the alien had teleported.
But even still, if it had done that they still should have been able to detect it.
A second prodigy, who had just turned to run, suddenly froze mid step. His entire body convulsed, and a sickening squelch echoed through the clearing as his chest imploded inwards — crushed, like a tin can under an ocean of pressure.
A gurgling sound escaped from his throat as he collapsed, blood quickly pooling around his boots.
“WHAT THE HELL IS THIS THING!?”
Someone screamed hysterically, with tears and snot pouring out of their face.
“Retreat! RETREAT!”
Another prodigy yelled, increasing the spread of panic like a wildfire.
But their shouts were drowned out by an unnatural hum — a sound that came from the silhouetted figure itself.
It wasn’t a voice, nor was it mechanical.
It was resonant.
Vibrating deep within their bones like the reverberation of a mountain sized bell.
And then, the figure stepped forward, emerging fully from the remnants of the mist.
