Chapter 510: Leon
Private Leon slouched at his desk with a bag of dried synthesised fruits in one hand and a data comm playing an old style movie on the other.
His station on the Federation relay ship was as uneventful as a career could get in the Federal Military, even if he was a part of the fleet set out to conquer Andromeda.
His job was simple — Monitoring signals in the quiet void.
That was all he had to do, and today he acted as the link between the main Federal fleet and the expedition party that had recently been sent down to one of the planet’s surfaces to investigate some energy signatures.
‘Nothing ever happens out here…’
Leon thought to himself, popping another piece of synth fruit in his mouth.
His console chimed at that moment though, breaking the monotony that he had become so used to.
Leon sighed, glancing at the blinking light like he was used to it.
From time to time his ship’s computer would act like it received a message or signal, but it would always turn out just to be the remnant waves of a star exploding far, far away or from a pulsar etc.
They all went away after a few seconds though, so Leon just continued watching his movie and eating his snacks.
One…
Two…
Three…
But even after three seconds, the message hadn’t gone away.
‘It’s probably just another garbled up message from one of the cargo vessels back at the Federal fleet, they always send out unnecessary comms.’
He leaned forward, brushing some dust and crumbs off his uniform and began tapping the screen.
The comms channel hissed with traffic the moment he opened it.
“Great.”
Leon grumbled, adjusting the frequency.
The distortion persisted, with a cacophony of jumbled sounds and crackling interference still running amock.
But then, amidst the noise, a voice broke through — or at least something that sounded like a voice did.
“…tion… attack… help… powerful… immediate assis—”
The signal dissolved back into distortion once again.
Leon sat up straight, with his casual demeanour replaced with a growing interest.
The voice sounded panicked, with a desperate tone backing it up.
It wasn’t the usual automated distress call or routine transmission.
“Probably a glitch…” Leon told himself, though the doubts continued to creep into his mind.
His fingers began to dance over the controls as he worked to fix the distortion of the message and enhance it enough to hear it clearer.
After a few minutes passed, the message returned, slightly clearer this time.
“… Mira of the Expedition team… powerful alien lifeforms… B tier and above… send help immediately!”
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
“… fuck.”
Leon’s blood ran cold when he heard this.
His heard raced as the full meaning of the message began to dawn on him.
He recognised the name mentioned in the message, Mira, as she was a well known prodigy attacked to the Federation’s expedition party, so he knew this message was legit.
Especially when he looked at the origin location of this message as being the very planet they were currently on an exploratory mission on!
He knew the mission was high stakes, which was exactly why they sent Alex, Mira, and other prodigies over.
But this?
His hands trembled as he fine tuned the channel further.
The message repeated once again, more distorted than before, and then the console went silent.
“No, no, no…”
Leon muttered frantically, pressing buttons all over the console in an attempt to restore the connection.
But it was lost, the silence persisted.
The comm system chimed again.
This time, it was a different alert.
A proximity warning.
Leon’s eyes darted across the screen, which displaying the source of the alert.
“What the…?”
What he saw wasn’t a ship, or a planet, or even an object to begin with.
It was a spatial distortion.
“Unidentified spatial distortion detected,” the ship soon announced as if reading his mind. “All personnel on standby stations.”
Leon swallowed hard, with copious amounts of adrenaline surging through him. He wasn’t equipped for this — he was a comms officer, not a combat soldier!
He slapped the comm panel, broadcasting to the rest of the fleet behind him.
“This is Private Rask! We’ve got an incoming spatial distortion opening up near the expedition team’s planet and a distress call from the expedition team — I repeat, distress call from Mira! High tier alien threat reported!”
No response.
Leon cursed under his breath.
This must be why the message from Mira was so distorted despite the top of the line technology they were using both ways.
The aliens she mentioned in the message must be using some sort of signal jammers to block any messages coming in or out of a certain area, but thankfully he was close enough to Mira’s relay that he could catch her message before it completely dissipated into the nothingness of space.
He bolted to the ship’s central command console. The lights flickered on as he pressed a few buttons, and a low hum reverberated throughout the hull.
The proximity alarm continued blaring at full force, until it came to a complete stop.
The spatial distortion was no longer arriving and forming.
It had now fully formed.
Leon glanced at the viewport, and his breath caught in his throat.
‘I’ve only heard about those in theories…’
A tear in space hovered just above the planet where Mira, Alex and the rest of the group of prodigies occupied, pulsating with an intense, unnatural energy.
A wormhole, to be specific.
It was clear that whatever caused it to form wasn’t natural at all.
It was manmade.
It looked like a scratch, a wound in the fabric of reality itself, with its edges writhing and crackling with otherworldly lights.
“Holy shi—”
Before Leon could finish his exclamation of shock, the tear rippled, and the tip of something big started to appear from the other side.
However, he couldn’t quite catch sight of the thing, as his ship had just finished the procedures for entering warp, and he was on his way back to the federal fleet before he knew it.
If he couldn’t get a message across on the official channels, then he could only resort to the old fashioned way of doing things.
Send a messenger!
Aka, himself.
