Chapter 511: I need to see her
“Warp duration estimated at three minutes. All systems nominal.”
The ship’s AI voiced out.
“Great.”
Leon muttered to himself, leaning back in his chair as he did so. His breathing was still ragged, and any attempt he made to steady it was a failure.
He had to think clearly.
His primary task was to report what he’d seen and heard to the fleet. But how could he get them to take it seriously?
The fleet wasn’t exactly known for its responsiveness. Bureaucracy was thick in the Federal Military, and messages often got lost in the endless chains of command.
Even if he made it back to the fleet, he couldn’t guarantee anyone important would actually hear him out, and even if they did, would they act fast enough?
A sinking feeling was all he felt in his gut.
“No…” he said aloud. His fist slammed onto the console. “I can’t let them brush this off. Not only is the expedition team trapped on the planet, but this could result in a conflict far extending beyond that!”
He pulled up the ship’s logs and began to compile evidence of everything that had occurred, including creating copies of the recordings of Mira’s transmission in the unlikely case something happened to them.
He included anything that even seemed remotely important — the distorted transmission, his own enhanced transmission, the coordinates of the spatial distortion, and a recording of the tear in space and the huge object just starting to appear from it before he entered warp.
The data painted a grim picture, and he hoped it was enough to convince the higher ups to take action.
“Messeage ready for deliver upon arrival.”
The ship’s ai chimed once he uploaded his evidence to the ship.
Leon nodded, but the knot in his stomach didn’t go away.
The ship shuddered lightly soon after, signalling the end of the warp sequence.
Stars blinked back into view, and the massive shade of the Federal Fleet’s flagship, as well as the Jewel, loomed ahead.
The menacing huge open hole on the side of the Jewel, signifying its capability for unimaginable destruction, calmed Leon a little when he caught sight of it.
If anything happened, this was their failsafe.
“Connection established with the Jewel.”
Leon wasted no time, opening a direct channel to the fleet’s command centre.
The Jewel had long taken over the role of the fleet’s leader from the flagship by this point.
“This is Private Rask, reporting from the Nomad, calling in an emergency report.”
He spoke his transmission clearly.
One second passed.
No response.
“I repeat, this is Private Leon Rask…”
Two seconds passed,
No response.

‘What the fuck are these guys even doing!?’
Leon’s anger started to well up after a few more seconds passed with no response, but he calmed himself down and started thinking rationally again.
‘It’s clear that something is wrong with my comms, perhaps they didn’t just interfere with any signals transmitted, but with our comms systems directly…’
Coming to this conclusion, and admitting that he probably wouldn’t get a response even if he waited 10 more minutes, he decided to take a big risk.
He booted up the ship’s engines again, this time heading straight for the huge opening on the Jewel.
Technically he wasn’t supposed to try and dock his ship with another without asking for permission first, but considering his comms were down and this was an emergency situation, Leon assumed and hoped that the higher ups wouldn’t scold him for this move.
‘Looks like I’ll have to go looking for a reply in person…’
Leon stepped cautiously down the gateway of his ship, his nervous tapping with his boots clanking against the polished steel quickly becoming the tune of his mind.
His heart hammered in his chest, and his hand hovered near the axe holstered at his hip, a precaution he rarely thought to make use of as a comms officer, but in this moment he felt wary.
The scene before him though, was… surprisingly normal.
Crew members strolled through the bustling hangar, some chatting in groups, others pushing crates or supplies or tending to docked ships nearby.
A few even waved at him casually, as if welcoming a fellow soldier back from a routine mission.
Leon froze for a moment, his head beginning to spin.
‘How the hell are they so calm? If my comms were jammed, the fleet’s comms should be too… right?’
A chill ran down his spine.
‘Did those aliens somehow infiltrate my ship’s systems directly??’
His stomach churned at the thought. If this were the case, he’d just docked a compromised ship directly into the jewel!
A bead of sweat slid down his temple. He pushed the thought aside for now — there was no time to dwell on what ifs, only certainties.
And he was certain that his report needed to be given to the highest authority.
He straightened his posture and strode toward the nearest group of officers, with their crisp and clean uniforms evident of their superior status and rank.
He approached quickly.
“Excuse me.” he spoke, addressing one of the officers. “I need to speak to Commander Althea immediately. It’s an emergency.”
The officers stopped their conversation and all turned to look at him. There was a brief, awkward silence before one of them – a man with a smug grin – let out a laugh.
“A private? Wishing to speak to the commander of the entire Federal Fleet?”
He said dripping with amusement and mockery.
“What’s next? You asking for a seat at the command council? Wanting to speak to the president? Maybe even ask for his job? Hahahaha.”
The others joined in his laughter, and Leon felt his face flush red with frustration, which the others just mistook for embarrassment.
Leon went to speak up again, to explain himself, but the same officer who just mocked him raised a hand and blocked his mouth.
“Private, I admire your… enthusiasm,” he said, still amused. “But Commander Althea is a very busy woman. If you have a report, you can submit it through the proper channels, and it will be reviewed in due time.”
Leon felt a vein pop in his forehead.
He wanted to punch this guy so badly!
