Chapter 854: Damned Lunatics
“Well now…” she whispered more so to herself than Quinlan while cracking her neck. “You’re finally giving me some trouble without having to rely on the element of surprise to kick me in the behind.”

Without waiting for a response, her foot lashed out, forming a sweeping arc aimed right at his legs. He leapt above it, wind spiraling beneath his feet. Fire gathered in his limbs as he came down with a falling axe-kick, but she caught it on her forearms, then countered with a shoulder to his gut.

They broke apart.

Then collided again.

Fist to knee. Elbow to side. Palm to jaw.

For the first time, Quinlan was keeping up.

His elements roared—earth bracing his stance, fire powering his limbs, water cooling his burning muscles and sharpening flow, wind guiding his reflexes. He was a tempest, controlled and relentless.

And Serika was slowly getting cornered.

Her movements stayed tighter, cleaner. Her technique was still superior. But she was no longer untouchable. She was being pressured.

He spun past her guard and drove a punch into her stomach, mirroring what she’d done to him earlier, and sent her flying through the air.

“C’mon, Teach,” he called after her, laughing through the blood in his mouth. “Aren’t I worthy of your flames yet? I’m feeling a little underappreciated over here!”

Serika flipped in midair, landed with one hand on the earth and one knee raised, sliding into a crouch with the grace of a dancer. Her eyes locked on him, fiery and narrow.

“Watch your mouth, arrogant runt!” she grunted with a mad grin on her face.

Serika then exploded forward in a blur.

Quinlan raised his arms to parry her punch, when suddenly she dropped low and planted her hands on the ground, twisting her torso with impossible flexibility.

Her legs snapped up in a capoeira-style reverse scissor kick, and her heel slammed up into his chin with the force of a speeding bullet train.

Stars exploded behind his eyes.

“Told you to watch your mouth, arrogant student of mine…”

His body flung upward, but he didn’t lose composure. With a snarl, he clenched his teeth, dropped like a stone, and slammed his palms into the ground, earth qi erupting in a wall to block her next blitz.

But Serika was already smashing through it like a comet.

She pummeled him. Elbows, knees, hammering fists. His ribs screamed. His arms went numb. But he fought back through it all: fire countering, wind sidestepping, water absorbing, earth bracing.

“So you want my fire?” she snarled between strikes. “We’d burn down half the forest. I can’t let loose here!”

He roared and slugged her square in the face.

Blood splattered. Her head snapped to the side.

“Then where?” he asked while sending a kick flying right back at her face.

She moved with incredible speed as she sidestepped and tackled him to the ground in answer, and they crashed down in a heap of tangled limbs and bruised flesh.

Quinlan found his back against the ground and a fierce tigeress strapped to his lower abdomen. Their hands locked. Fingers interlaced.

Their faces were just inches apart.

She hissed through gritted teeth, eyes wild with pure ecstasy as blood dripped from her nose right onto Quinlan’s face. “To Naryissia’s royal palace.”

Quinlan blinked. Then grinned.

“Where Queen Nalai resides,” he finished for her.

Serika nodded while doing her utmost to overpower him.

His bloodied lips curled into a savage smile. “Now that’s a place worth burning to the ground.”

They pushed harder against each other with their arms trembling, ground cracking beneath their locked bodies, qi spiraling like a brewing storm. Neither gave way.

Not an inch.

The clearing trembled around them.

The sun burned overhead.

And somewhere nearby, Feng was finding her comfy spot.

She was sprawled across a soft towel laid atop the grass, away from the storm of flying fists and elemental shockwaves. Her outer robe lay bunched beside her, discarded for the sake of sunlight. A light breeze fluttered her dark hair as she lazily adjusted her position, lifting her arms to rest behind her head and stretching her lithe, slender frame with the contented sigh of someone who had very much given up on trying to make sense of the world.

As she reclined, the sun kissed her bare skin that was glistening ever so slightly thanks to the scented oils she’d quietly applied earlier after getting them from Serika’s servant, Taalin, who was happy to be of assistance to her lady’s new friends.

With a quiet huff, Feng parted the front of her robe to reveal her undergarments, a simple but elegant dark silk set. She arranged herself for maximum exposure, tilting her body at just the right angle so her legs and stomach would catch the best of the sun’s glow.

She was tanning.

Her jade-like skin, the product of years of meticulous care, was not very willing to shift toward a more sun-kissed tone. At least, not yet. It was as if her body refused to lose its pale color.

A faint blush crept into her cheeks as she silently acknowledged the reason why she was sunbathing even though she had never done it before the previous few weeks.

She’d always believed a pale, jade-like, elegant beauty was the ideal. Regal. Untouchable. What every single man’s heart desired.

But evidently, SOMEONE preferred the hard-bodied, sun-bronzed, muscle-flexing, punch-throwing type of woman who kicked like a war goddess and smelled of sweat and fury.

She growled with extreme amounts of displeasure.

“Stupid brain of mine! You better shut your damned mouth or I’ll beat you up.”

Somehow, against all logic, she’d developed a crush on the rudest guy in the world with the worst taste in women. Which meant that she needed to rethink her values of what the term ‘feminine beauty’ meant.

Still muttering under her breath, she shifted to get even more comfortable, letting the sunlight wash over her face and torso. Her breathing slowed. Her muscles relaxed.

The sounds of fists colliding and battle cries thundering in the background slowly faded as she drifted into a sunlit nap, caught between daydreams and a light doze. The sun’s warmth wrapped around her like a blanket, and her last thought before sleep took her was…

“Damned lunatics.”
